Death Through Administrative Indifference: The Prison Litigation Reform Act Allows Women To Die In California's Substandard Prison Health Care System, Amy Pétre Hill Jul 2002

Death Through Administrative Indifference: The Prison Litigation Reform Act Allows Women To Die In California's Substandard Prison Health Care System, Amy Pétre Hill

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

California's prison system, the nation's largest, developed a health care policy that is deliberately indifferent to the medical needs of women while still spending significantly more per prisoner for health care than other large states. However, the Prison Litigation Reform Act of 1996 interacts with California's prison administrative law to prevent women inmates from seeking emergency injunctive relief from the federal courts. Legal and legislative tools can be used at the federal and state level for short- and long-term reform of the California Department of Correction's health care system to stop the needless deaths of California's female inmates. Ultimately, courts …

Characterization Of Salmonella Serovars By Pcr–Single-Strand Conformation Polymorphism Analysis, S. Nair, Kwai Lin Thong, T. Pang, M. Altwegg Jul 2002

Characterization Of Salmonella Serovars By Pcr–Single-Strand Conformation Polymorphism Analysis, S. Nair, Kwai Lin Thong, T. Pang, M. Altwegg

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and PCR–single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analyses were carried out on the 1.6-kb groEL gene from 41 strains of 10 different Salmonella serovars. Three HaeIII RFLP profiles were recognized, but no discrimination between the serovars could be achieved by this technique. However, PCR-SSCP analysis of the groEL genes of various Salmonella serovars produced 14 SSCP profiles, indicating the potential of this technique to differentiate different Salmonella serovars (interserovar differentiation). Moreover, PCR-SSCP could differentiate strains within a subset of serovars (intraserovar discrimination), as three SSCP profiles were produced for the 11 Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis strains, and …

Modelling The Effect Of Information Feedback On The Spread Of The Ebola Virus, Bernadette O’Regan, Richard Moles Jul 2002

Modelling The Effect Of Information Feedback On The Spread Of The Ebola Virus, Bernadette O’Regan, Richard Moles

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper describes the application of the tools and techniques of the system dynamics method to the complex problem of understanding the spread of the Ebola virus. The main deliverable of this research is a computer simulation model in the system dynamics tradition. The essence of system dynamics is to act as a framework for formalising mental models of a problem. In this respect, the system dynamics simulation model presented here is a theory describing the structure of, and interrelationships between, the factors that impact an outbreak of the Ebola virus and the attempts to contain it. The model, comprising …

A Bayesian Network For Investigating The Decline In Fish Catch In Switzerland, M. E. Borsuk, Patricia Burkhardt-Holm, Peter Reichert Jul 2002

A Bayesian Network For Investigating The Decline In Fish Catch In Switzerland, M. E. Borsuk, Patricia Burkhardt-Holm, Peter Reichert

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Catches of brown trout have decreased about 50% in many rivers and streams in Switzerland in the past 15 years. Additionally, the health status of numerous brown trout populations has been assessed to be impaired. In order to evaluate the causes for these phenomena, a nationwide interdisciplinary project named “Fischnetz” was launched in 1999. Twelve hypotheses for the fish population declines were proposed and laboratory and field research projects were initiated to investigate these suggested causes. To apply the results of these investigations to the task of discerning the relative causal importance of each of the hypotheses, a Bayesian probability …

Economic Growth, Longevity, And The Epidemiological Transition, Olivier F. Morand Jul 2002

Economic Growth, Longevity, And The Epidemiological Transition, Olivier F. Morand

Economics Working Papers

This paper integrates investments in health to a standard growth model where physical and human capital investments are the combined engines of growth. It shows the existence of two distinct health regimes separated by an 'Epidemiological Transition'. The various patterns of the transition identified in the epidemiological literature can be mapped into the model. The model also leads to the important hypothesis that the epidemiological transition may induce an economy to switch to a modern growth regime.

Miscellaneous Publication 6/2001 - Sheep And Goat Industries Biosecurity Plan, Department Of Agriculture Western Australia, Government Of Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

StockGuard has been initiated to develop a series of biosecurity plans for the animal industries in Western Australia. Through StockGuard, representatives from the animal industries have been working with the Department of Agriculture to identify the major threats to each of the animal industries and to develop action plans detailing how these threats will be managed.

The recent Foot and Mouth outbreak in the United Kingdom is a stark example of the potential for exotic disease to devastate an animal industry. The UK experience, along with the 1999 outbreak of virulent Newcastle disease in poultry in New South Wales have …

Clinical And Prognostic Values Of Anti-Hepatitis B Core Immunoglobulin M Detection In Asymptomatic Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Carriers, Hisham Y. Ali, Zina E. Faransawy, Nada A. Al-Megthab

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical and prognostic values of persistence of anti-hepatitis B core immunoglobulin M antibody in asymptomatic adults chronic hepatitis B surface antigen anti-hepatitis Be carriers and its absence in others. METHODS: Fifty-two hepatitis B surface antigen/anti-hepatitis Be carriers with and 32 without anti-hepatitis B core immunoglobulin M marker were enrolled in this study. The cases were regular attendees of Public Health Laboratory, Virology Center (the main referral center for viral hepatitis) Mosul, North Iraq, for follow-up and clinical evaluation. The study was performed from June 1999 to June 2001. The studied …

Epidemiology Of Neonatal Meningitis In Qatar, Mahmoud F. El-Said, Mohammed S. Bessisso, Mohammad A. Janahi, Lina H. Habob, Sittana S. El-Shafie

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal meningitis is responsible for thousands of neonatal deaths annually all over the world. Our study was conducted to determine the epidemiology, management and best preventive measures for neonatal meningitis in Qatar. METHODS: A retrospective study reviewed the records of bacterial meningitis patients under the age of one month. The study was carried out at Hamad Medical Hospital, the only hospital that provides health care at Qatar and the study period was between January 1998 to December 2000. RESULTS: Thirteen patients were included. Sixty percent of patients had early onset meningitis. Causative organisms were group B Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella …
