Teaching Of Human Physiology As It Relates To Changes In Medical Education:An Asian Perspective Based On The Yin-Yang Principle, Chiu-Yin Kwan
Teaching Of Human Physiology As It Relates To Changes In Medical Education:An Asian Perspective Based On The Yin-Yang Principle, Chiu-Yin Kwan
Journal of Medical Education
From a clinical perspective, the understanding of human health is evolving with not only the continuing expansion and emergence of new knowledge in bio-logical sciences that are relevant to medicine, but also with the ever increasingly complexity of the environment that affects people's health, including the political, social and economic factors which govern the population and behavioral perspectives of medicine. Conceivably, the concept of human health/illnesses and the art/science of healing may also change in response to the environmental factors that are evolving with the progression of technology and human civilization. It is inevitable that the approach and methods in …

Theorizing Behavioral Law And Economics: A Defense Of Evolutionary Analysis And The Law, Neel P. Parekh
Theorizing Behavioral Law And Economics: A Defense Of Evolutionary Analysis And The Law, Neel P. Parekh
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Behavioral law and economics (BLE) provides a steady stream of empirical evidence that counters the predictions of law and economics. Despite this research and data, however, many theorists argue that BLE ultimately fails because it posits no underlying theory. This Note argues that perspectives from evolutionary biology, evolutionary psychology, and the brain sciences can provide the missing motivational theory for BLE's empirical findings. The Note also examines the implications a more consistent and reasoned consideration of evolutionary analysis and the law (EA) has for our legal regime. In theorizing BLE and defending EA, this Note aims to show how evolutionary …
An Equality Paradign For Preventing Genetic Discrimination, Anita Silvers, Michael A. Stein
An Equality Paradign For Preventing Genetic Discrimination, Anita Silvers, Michael A. Stein
Vanderbilt Law Review
On June 26, 2000, scientists announced at a White House news conference that they had completed mapping the human genome sequence, the human race's genetic blueprint. This pronouncement generated tremendous and well-deserved excitement. Genomics, the study and application of genetic information, promises to be an unparalleled tool for improving public health. Genetic testing can identify asymptomatic individuals who are at risk of becoming ill themselves or bestowing illness on their children. As a result, individuals who test positive can take prophylactic measures to slow or stop disease and can also reduce the births of progeny at high risk of compromised …
Are ‘The Reflective Practitioner’ And ‘Learning Cycles’ Suitable Foundations For Theories About Designing And Design Cognition, T. Love
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper challenges the use of the concepts ‘reflective practice’ and ‘learning cycles’ as a basis for analysing designing, for building coherent theories about human designing, and for developing design methodologies. It develops the argument via two paths: a review of the original formulation of the concepts of ‘reflective practice/practitioners’ and ‘learning cycles’; and an analysis of the implications of recent findings in the areas of brain and neurology research for building theories about designing. The paper suggests researchers have over extended the use of the reflective practice and learning cycle concepts: concepts that were devised as relatively coarse structural …

Sleep Problems Among Pupils In Benghazi, Libya, Marwan M. Al-Sharbati
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To find the prevalence of sleep problems among pupils, its possible causes and associated behaviors. METHODS: This study was carried out during 3-24 February 1996. We randomly selected a sample of (277) 5th graders (181 boys and 96 girls), from 3 public primary schools in 3 different socio-economic areas in Benghazi, Libya. We interviewed the pupils and the teachers by a pretested questionnaire concerning sleep, school achievement and other behaviors. Those pupils who sleep after 10:00 pm, or those having bad sleep characters, or both, twice or more a week in the last month, were considered suffering from sleep …
A Small-Satellite Demonstrator For Generating Artificial Gravity In Space Via A Tethered System, Andre Mazzoleni, John Hoffman
A Small-Satellite Demonstrator For Generating Artificial Gravity In Space Via A Tethered System, Andre Mazzoleni, John Hoffman
Small Satellite Conference
It is well-known that prolonged exposure in humans to a microgravity environment leads to significant loss of bone and muscle mass; this presents a formidable obstacle to human exploration of space, particularly for missions requiring travel times of several months or more, such as a 6 to 9mon th trip to Mars. Artificial gravity may be produced by spinning a spacecraft about its center of mass, but since the g– force generated by rotation is equal to “omega-squared times r” (where omega is its angular velocity and r is the distance from the center of rotation), we have that unless …

A Land Use History Of The Holly Springs National Forest, Michelle R. Mcanally
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis details the land use history of the Holly Springs National Forest. A description of the physical environment and a narrative cultural history of the area from the arrival of people into the North Central Hills are included. Archaeological survey data, soils data and witness tree locations were brought together using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology and analyzed in an ecological framework.
An environmental reconstruction using witness tree locations and soil types served as a platform for the delineation of environmental zones in which presettlement tree cover was estimated and compared with previous environmental studies of the area. Prehistoric …
Multi-Agent Simulations As A Tool For The Assessment Of Urban Microclimate And Its Effect On Pedestrian Behaviour, Michael Bruse
Multi-Agent Simulations As A Tool For The Assessment Of Urban Microclimate And Its Effect On Pedestrian Behaviour, Michael Bruse
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The urban canopy layer is characterised by a specific climate which significantly differs from theaverage regional climate conditions. Especially inside urban structures such as street canyons, shopping mallsor public places, the local microclimate depends directly on the physical properties of the surrounding surfacesand objects, producing well-known effects such as wind speed decrease, local jets, increased turbulence orincreased thermal loads. These phenomena can have a strong influence on the comfort of pedestrians usingthese areas for different tasks of urban life or leisure activities. Assessing urban climate means to answer thequestion, how the citizens feel under the given circumstances and to decide, …

The General Public's Knowledge And Perceptions Of The Certified Athletic Trainer's Professional Role And Educational Background, Casey Christy
The General Public's Knowledge And Perceptions Of The Certified Athletic Trainer's Professional Role And Educational Background, Casey Christy
Theses and Dissertations
This study's purpose was to determine the general public's knowledge, attitudes and behaviors relative to the certified athletic trainer's professional role and educational background.
Two-hundred and seventy-nine people completed an 11-question intercept survey. Results indicate the athletic training professional faces many perception barriers with the general public.
Only 12 percent identified an "athletic trainer" as one of the on-field healthcare providers for injured professional football players. More than half failed to correctly describe what an athletic trainer does. Many responses indicate the public confuses certified athletic trainers with "personal trainers" and other strength and conditioning professionals. Eighty-four percent of the …

An Investigation Into The Toxicity Of 1,3-Butadiene And Its Metabolite (Monoepoxybutadiene) On Prostate Cancer Cells, Siobhian M. Bacchus
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
1,3-Butadiene is a colorless, non-corrosive gas with a mild aromatic or gasoline like odor. Manufacturing, transporting and usage are the main sources of l,3-butadiene pollution in the environment. 1,3-butadiene is kno wn to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in humans and animals. The primary routes of potential human exposure to 1,3-butadiene are inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. 1,3-butadiene is metabolized in experimental animals and human liver microsomes to epoxide metabolites, initially 1,2-epoxy-3-butene and subsequently 1,2:3,4-di epoxybutane, by cytochrome P450 enzymes. There are significant species differences in the metabolism of 1,3-butadiene both in vivo …
Do Cellular Phones Cause Headaches?, Jasmine Gay
Do Cellular Phones Cause Headaches?, Jasmine Gay
McCabe Thesis Collection
Many people have recently complained about experiencing headaches in association with the use of their cellular telephones. There is much controversy over this subject because it has not yet been proven that the microwaves emitted by cellular telephones cause headaches. The research questions include the following: What are the effects, if any, of the use of cellular telephones on human health? Do they cause headaches? Are they responsible for the increase in size of some brain tumors?
There have been many experiments performed by various scientists in the field of bioelectromagnetics and by the World Health Organization (WHO); however, these …

Changes In The Frequency Of Extreme Warm-Season Surface Dewpoints In Northeastern Illinois: Implications For Cooling-System Design And Operation, Jesse Sparks, David Changnon, Jason Starke
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Warm-season (1 May–30 September) hourly dewpoint data were examined for temporal changes at two weather stations in northeastern Illinois during a 42-yr period (1959–2000). This area has dense population (greater than 8 million), and shifts to more or less atmospheric moisture have major implications on cooling demands. The 42-yr period was analyzed as two separate arbitrarily chosen equally sized periods, the early (1959–79) and the later (1980–2000) periods. Analyses of data from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and the Greater Rockford Airport showed a statistically significant increase in the number of hours with dewpoints greater than or equal to 248C (an …
