Five Cases Of African Revolution—A Comparative Historical Study Of Successful Anti-Colonial Revolutions, Fergus John October Breck

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis is a comparative historical study of successful anti-colonial revolutions. The idea is to determine what shared social conditions in these revolutions contributed to their success. The thesis includes an extensive review of the literature on revolutions, as well as a section devoted to defining the term ‘revolution’ as it will be used. A detailed method of analysis for the cases is offered and an application of the process is presented following a section devoted to the relevant history of each selected case. The Symphony In America: Maurice Abravanel, And The Utah Symphony Orchestra: The Battle For Classical Music, Alex D. Smith Jan 2002

The Symphony In America: Maurice Abravanel, And The Utah Symphony Orchestra: The Battle For Classical Music, Alex D. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Between 1947 and 1979 the Utah Symphony Orchestra was transformed from an obscure, part-time, amateur orchestra into one of the major symphony orchestras in America. By 1947 the orchestra, which had begun as a Works Progress Administration organization, was barely hanging on. The symphony struggled to remain financially solvent, performing only a few concerts per year. Thirty-two years later the Utah Symphony Orchestra was one of the most prestigious musical ensembles in the country— receiving rave reviews from critics around the world, touring extensively, and with more than a hundred albums to its credit. The remarkable growth of the Utah …

The Development Of The Tavistock And Tavistock-Inspired Group Relations Movement In Great Britain And The United States: A Comparative And Historical Perspective, Amy L. Fraher Edd

Dissertations

In order to gain a deeper understanding of authority, people must analyze human behavior in groups. To study these behaviors, a group relations movement was spawned approximately 60 years ago and has influenced people's thinking about leadership and authority in groups and organizations ever since. This study analyzed primary and secondary historical sources, including data from extended videotaped interviews the researcher conducted with thirteen group relations experts throughout the United States and Great Britain, as a way to reconstruct the history of a significant part of the group relations movement. These videotaped interviews are available for viewing. Specifically, the study …

Stereotypes, Intolerance, And Policy Supports For Women, Minorities, And Gays: The Diversity Course Impact On Students Pursuing Higher Education In The Sreb States., Christine J. Brehm

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Problematic stereotyping of women, minorities, and gays in the United States may become justification for prejudicial attitudes that lead to political intolerance toward members of these marginalized groups. While images of others and a sense of political tolerance develop through childhood and preadult socialization, education beyond high school can have a significant impact on one's reliance on stereotypes when considering the granting or withholding of basic civil rights from marginalized members of society, and may also affect the position one takes towards policies created to benefit women, minorities, and gays. During the fall semester of 2000, an investigation of these …

Democracy And Disorder: Electoral Violence And Political Modernisation In England And Wales, 1857-1880, Justin Wasserman Jan 2002

Democracy And Disorder: Electoral Violence And Political Modernisation In England And Wales, 1857-1880, Justin Wasserman

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The thesis analyses mid-nineteenth century electoral violence in England and Wales in order to contribute to our understanding of the character of Victorian electoral politics, and to assess the pace of political modernization as it has recently been defined. Historians have long acknowledged the presence of physical violence, rioting and intimidation during British elections from at least the Middle Ages to the turn of the twentieth-century, and yet the precise nature, frequency and scale of this phenomenon has remained somewhat obscured by a lack of statistical data on the subject. Therefore, by compiling a numerical sample of violence, based on …

The Cemetery Record Of William D. Huntington, Nauvoo Sexton, Fred E. Woods Jan 2002

The Cemetery Record Of William D. Huntington, Nauvoo Sexton, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

When John Butler first visited Commerce (later known as Nauvoo) he recalled, "I asked Brother Joseph what kind of a place it was. He said it was a low, marshy, wet, damp and nasty place, but that if we went to work and improved it, it would become more healthy and the Lord would bless it for our sakes." The Prophet Joseph Smith also stated, "the name of our city (Nauvoo) is of Hebrew origin, and signifies a beautiful situation, or place, carrying with it, also, the idea of rest; and is truly descriptive of the most delightful situation... Political, National, Racial, And Imperial Unconscious In James Fenimore Cooper’S The Pioneers, Nizar Farouk Hermes Jan 2002

Political, National, Racial, And Imperial Unconscious In James Fenimore Cooper’S The Pioneers, Nizar Farouk Hermes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Liberal humanist critics of James Fenimore Cooper's The Pioneers have for a long time relegated this politically packed nineteenth-century novel to the realms of the romantic. In the course of this study, I intend to show that Cooper's romantic discourse in The Pioneers is not "innocently romantic" as these critics have postulated. To argue for the political, national, racial, and imperial unconscious of The Pioneers as the latent, but active discourse throughout this text, I rely upon the materialist theories of Fredric Jameson, Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, Terry Eagleton, Homi Bhabha, Benedict Anderson, and Edward Said.

In Their Footsteps: Women Faculty Of Wartburg College 1914–1945, Susan Kosche Vallem Jan 2002

In Their Footsteps: Women Faculty Of Wartburg College 1914–1945, Susan Kosche Vallem

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the hiring and inclusion of women faculty members in private higher education, using Wartburg College as a case study. This study identified and described the educational policies and procedures at Wartburg from 1914 to 1945 related to the hiring of women faculty at Wartburg College.

While the history of women in higher education is well-chronicled, much less is written on the impetus and motivation for hiring women faculty and their impact on the institutions themselves. This dissertation adds to that specific body of knowledge.

Three research questions were investigated in this study: …
