The Loss And Persistence Of Black-Owned Farms And Farmland: A Review Of The Research Literature And Its Implications, Jess Gilbert, Gwen Sharp, M. Sindy Felin

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This paper reviews 115 articles and books published since 1971 that comprise almost all of the scholarly research on black farmers and land loss. It provides a general overview as well as discussion of the benefits of landownership for the black community. Several causes of black land and farm loss are reviewed: forced sales due to "heir property," lack of access to government programs, and continuing racial discrimination by lenders and government agencies. A number of the works cited provide possible ways to slow the loss of black-owned land, including strategies to increase the profitability of individual farms and increased …

When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson Dec 2002

When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This is an ethnographic study of urban education and community development in the city of New Orleans. In New Orleans, as in all American cities, the public schools are at the center of local politics and the policies that affect community life. Institutions of public education have come under fire for failing to prepare youth to compete in the global economy. This is particularly true in urban communities, where schools serve a higher proportion of students of color facing greater incidences of poverty, underemployment and economic distress. As education policymakers and business leaders look to improve education, many of the …

This study is an historical study comparing the spring and fall test scores of students who attended summer academic program of one particular private school for students with learning differences, including autism, Asperger's Syndrome, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, and nonverbal learning disabilities. This study concluded that there was a statistical significance between the regression rates in both reading vocabulary and reading comprehension among those who attended the summer program and those who did not attend the summer program. Those students who did not attend the summer program regressed in skills significantly. Those students who attended the summer program maintained or …

Effect On Participation In High School Extracurricular Activities On Grade Point Average, Nancy J. Aberasturi Dec 2002

Effect On Participation In High School Extracurricular Activities On Grade Point Average, Nancy J. Aberasturi

Theses

Historically, studies have debated the relationship between student grade point average and student involvement in extracurricular activities. The present study investigated that relationship. A group of 47 high school sophomores and juniors voluntarily completed and returned a questionnaire designed by the researcher, which gathered data on involvement in all-inclusive extracurricular activities, plans for attending a college or university, gender, age, and date of birth. The sample included 22 females, 24 males, and I subject who did not indicate gender. Cumulative grade point average was determined by student records. A correlation analysis indicated that a significant, positive relationship existed between grade …

Taxonomic Revision And Paleoecology Of Middle Devonian (Eifelian) Fishes Of The Onondaga, Columbus And Delaware Limestones Of The Eastern United States, Robert Lewis Martin Dec 2002

Taxonomic Revision And Paleoecology Of Middle Devonian (Eifelian) Fishes Of The Onondaga, Columbus And Delaware Limestones Of The Eastern United States, Robert Lewis Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Eifelian stage of eastern North America has produced the remains of a substantial number of fish taxa, mostly from the Onondaga Limestone of New York and the Columbus and Delaware limestones of Ohio. Fish specimens in rock matrix from the Buffalo Science Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were compared to rock samples taken from quarries in Cheektowaga, New York and Warrensburg, Ohio, in order to determine the units from which the fish specimens originally came. This method allowed reasonable inference into the provenance of the museum specimens.;The stratigraphy indicates that the seas of New York and …

Faculty Scholarship

It is a great pleasure for academics to realize that fellow scholars sometimes read their work and take it seriously. We are genuinely flattered that Vasan Kesavan has chosen to comment on our article, When Did the Constitution Become Law?,1 and has done so with the intellectual rigor and generosity of spirit that characterizes his prodigious scholarship. 2 We are grateful to Mr. Kesavan for engaging us and grateful to the Notre Dame Law Review for accommodating the dialogue.

'A Perfect Estopel' : Selling The Nauvoo Temple, Lisle G. Brown Oct 2002

'A Perfect Estopel' : Selling The Nauvoo Temple, Lisle G. Brown

Librarian Research

As the Saints prepared to leave Nauvoo, Brigham Young and the Quorum of the Twelve attempted to lease the Nauvoo Temple and sell other Church properties in order to finance the trip west. They hoped to sell the temple and the majority of the buildings to the Catholic Church, but the two groups could not come to an agreement. When Brigham Young left the city, Almon Babbitt, Joseph Heywood, and John Fullmer were left behind to act as trustees. Their difficult task was to settle debts, find purchasers for private properties, sell public buildings and other properties owned by the …

Distribution And Abundance Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In The Great Plains: A Historical Perspective, Dallas Virchow, Scott E. Hygnstrom Oct 2002

Distribution And Abundance Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In The Great Plains: A Historical Perspective, Dallas Virchow, Scott E. Hygnstrom

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

It is a common belief that the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) was an extremely abundant species throughout the Great Plains prior to European settlement. We examined accounts from explorers, naturalists, and travelers in the Great Plains in the 19th and 20th centuries and found few that adequately document the relative abundance and distribution to support this view. Immense prairie dog colonies existed in the western Great Plains before Euro-American settlement, but it appears that the eastern Great Plains supported only localized populations. Historic accounts also indicate that the easternmost extent of the black-tailed prairie dog's range before …

Ottoman Tax Registers (Tahrir Defterleri), Metin M. Cosgel Oct 2002

Ottoman Tax Registers (Tahrir Defterleri), Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

The Ottoman government obtained current information on the empire's sources of revenue through periodic registers called tahrir defterleri. These documents include detailed information on tax-paying subjects and taxable resources, making it possible to study the economic and social history of the Middle East and Eastern Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Although the use of these documents have been typically limited to the construction of local histories, adopting a more optimistic attitude toward their potential and using appropriate sampling procedures can greatly increase their contribution to historical scholarship. They can be used in comprehensive quantitative studies and in addressing …
