"Real Ways Of Talking" And School Talking: One Appalachian Student's Perception Of Teacher Discourse During Writing Conferences, Sherry W. Powers Dec 2002

"Real Ways Of Talking" And School Talking: One Appalachian Student's Perception Of Teacher Discourse During Writing Conferences, Sherry W. Powers

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

A barrier to school literacy is created when teachers fail to build upon the familiar language of students. These research findings indicate that when students perceive that nonstandard ways of talking are not as highly valued by the school as Standard English is valued, they deliberately fail to produce written products that match their teacher's expectations.

Factors Assoctated With Technology Adoption In Clinical Practice, Jennifer C. Salib

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary focus of the current study was the investigation of technology use and related attitudes toward technology by psychologists in clinical practice. In addition, this study served as the initial step in a larger effort to develop a database, the Independent Practice Network (IP-Net), which will allow for on-going investigation of patterns and trends in independent practice. This study employed a survey method in which participants chose to respond either via the Internet or by mail. A random sample of 2,000 psychologists who are members of Division 42 (Psychologists in Independent Practice) of the American Psychological Association were invited …

Hipaa's Electronic Transactions Rule: Implications For Behavioral Health Providers, Brian Kamoie Dec 2002

Hipaa's Electronic Transactions Rule: Implications For Behavioral Health Providers, Brian Kamoie

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

On August 17, 2000, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) adopted uniform national standards for electronic health transactions and code sets pursuant to the Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Uniform standards hold the promise of improved efficiency in the health care system through standardized electronic transmission of health information.

Many behavioral health care organizations (e.g., the American Psychiatric Association, the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors, and the National Association of State Alcohol/Drug Abuse Directors) have argued that the Rule's standards are insufficient for behavioral health providers. …

A Method For Modeling Low-Probability, High- Consequence Risk Events: Vessel Traffic On The Lower Mississippi River, George Wooddell, Robert Gramling, Craig J. Forsyth Dec 2002

A Method For Modeling Low-Probability, High- Consequence Risk Events: Vessel Traffic On The Lower Mississippi River, George Wooddell, Robert Gramling, Craig J. Forsyth

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "A variety of commodities, from chlorine to corn and petroleum to passengers, are transported on the lower Mississippi River regularly. Corn, wheat and coal are the most commonly carried commodities. From a human health and safety perspective, these are relatively benign products in that a vessel accident and spill of these are not directly hazardous to people, whatever other ecological disturbances may ensue. However, over eighty million tons of petroleum products are transported on the river annually. Over a million tons of liquid natural gas traverse the river through the center of New Orleans. Additionally, over 400,000 tons of …

An Overview Of Progress In The International Regulation Of The Pharmaceutical Industry, Joan Costa-Font, Aaron Burakoff Harvard University; University Of Barcelona Dec 2002

An Overview Of Progress In The International Regulation Of The Pharmaceutical Industry, Joan Costa-Font, Aaron Burakoff Harvard University; University Of Barcelona

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The pharmaceutical industry, a significant source of healthcare throughout the world, has several features that distinguish it from the rest of the health industry. In the last half-century, new technology, better technological know-how, and overall economic growth have led to widespread and rapid growth in the pharmaceutical sector. Advancements in pharmaceutical research and development have led to the production of drugs that can routinely combat afflictions that, only years ago, were untreatable or even fatal. Since 1970, the average share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on pharmaceutical goods has increased in most Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) …

Public Perceptions Of Food Safety: Assessing The Risks Posed By Genetic Modification, Irradiation, Pesticides, Microbiological Contamination And High Fat/High Calorie Foods, Michael D. Mehta Dec 2002

Public Perceptions Of Food Safety: Assessing The Risks Posed By Genetic Modification, Irradiation, Pesticides, Microbiological Contamination And High Fat/High Calorie Foods, Michael D. Mehta

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "In general, people in the developed world have access to a safe and varied supply of food. Instead of systemic hunger, many developed countries have problems with obesity and other kinds of eating disorders among their citizenry. It is within this context that some find public concerns about the safety of food both paradoxical and misplaced. Nevertheless, understanding how people perceive the risk associated with food is an important exercise in demonstrating accountability and in setting priorities for regulation. With the advent of technologies for producing genetically modified foods, and the development of fat blockers like Olestra, the public …

Reply To Dr. Tengs’ Response, Lisa Heinzerling Dec 2002

Reply To Dr. Tengs’ Response, Lisa Heinzerling

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "The primary aim of my article “Five-Hundred Life-Saving Interventions and Their Misuse in the Debate Over Regulatory Reform” was to dispel the myth that had grown up around the studies Dr. Tammy Tengs published with Dr. John Graham: that is, the idea that government regulation is responsible for, in Dr. Graham’s words, the “statistical murder” of 60,000 people in the United States every year. As I demonstrated in my article, nothing in the work of Drs. Tengs and Graham supports Dr. Graham’s recurring charge of statistical murder through regulation. And nothing in Dr. Tengs’ response to my article casts …

Review Of "The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Debate: Science, Ethics, And Public Policy (Basic Bioethics)," Edited By Suzanne Holland, Karen Lebacqz, And Laurie Zoloth, James Steele

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "Perhaps like others, I started "The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Debate" not knowing many of the finer points of embryonic stem cell research, but I certainly had an opinion. This issue is far more complex than I had initially imagined. The editors do a commendable effort of compiling a sample of the innumerable arguments surrounding the debate."

Review Of "The Health Of Nations: Infectious Disease, Environmental Change, And Their Effects On National Security And Development," By Andrew T. Price-Smith, Andrew Mierins

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "Andrew T. Price-Smith, author of The Health of Nations: Infectious Disease, Environmental Change, and Their Effects on National Security and Development, provides a well documented and reasoned analysis of the need for world leaders, including the United States, to place the threat of infectious disease on the front burner of consideration when shaping both national and international policy. Professor Price-Smith has provided both empirical data and historical analysis to support the impassioned plea for this natural threat to be taken seriously. The book is geared toward the academic community and policy analysts; however, other professionals not involved in these …

A Battle Over Birth "Control": Legal And Legislative Employer Prescription Contraception Benefit Mandates, C. Keanin Loomis Dec 2002

A Battle Over Birth "Control": Legal And Legislative Employer Prescription Contraception Benefit Mandates, C. Keanin Loomis

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), employers are prohibited from discriminating against women by treating pregnancy and childbirth different from other medical conditions. Employers who offer medical benefits to their employees have thus been required to cover pregnancy-related medical costs on the same terms as other medical coverage. The cost of prescription contraception, however, has generally not been covered by employer-sponsored medical plans, even while other prescription drugs were. This Note examines the recent case of Erickson v. Bartell Drug Co., which challenged this practice of excluding prescription contraception coverage as discriminatory under the PDA, and argues that further federal …

Understanding Prophylactic Remedies Through The Looking Glass Of Bush V. Gore, Tracy A. Thomas Dec 2002

Understanding Prophylactic Remedies Through The Looking Glass Of Bush V. Gore, Tracy A. Thomas

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Using the context of Bush v. Gore as a vehicle for discussion, Professor Thomas examines the use and legitimacy of prophylactic remedies. In this Article, Professor Thomas advances the argument that the broad prophylactic remedy provided by the U.S. Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore may be viewed as contrary to the law of remedies in that it operated to negate, rather than enforce, legal rights. In particular, prophylactic remedies which are untailored and unachievable, as in Bush v. Gore, threaten the legitimacy of prophylaxis. Professor Thomas argues that the use of prophylactic remedies itself is not problematic, but concludes …

The Use Of Psychological State Terms By Late Talkers At Age 3, Eliza Carlson Lee, Leslie Rescorla Dec 2002

The Use Of Psychological State Terms By Late Talkers At Age 3, Eliza Carlson Lee, Leslie Rescorla

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

The use of psychological state words during mother-child play sessions at age 3 was examined in 31 children diagnosed with delayed expressive language at 24-31 months and 21 age-matched typically developing comparison children. Children and mothers in the late talker group made more references to physiological states and fewer references to cognitive states than the children and mothers in the typically developing comparison group. The children's use of cognitive terms correlated significantly with measures of language ability, including mean length of utterance, Index of Productive Syntax score, and use of propositional complements, as well as with their mothers' use of …

Exploring Ethical Dimensions Through Fiction, Abha Chatterjee Dec 2002

Exploring Ethical Dimensions Through Fiction, Abha Chatterjee

IIMB Management Review

Based on her experience with students of science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Prof Abha Chatterjee provides a case study for exploring the dimensions of ethics through fiction. While literature can be an instrument in raising a variety of ethical values and themes, its advantage lies in that it deals with the concrete and the particular and readers can learn from it without the intense emotional upheavals that accompany such dilemmas in everyday life. Muktadhara, a play by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore was selected as a case study as it evokes problems which engineers would identify …

Business Ethics : The Mindtree Perspective, S Janakiraman

IIMB Management Review

Right at its inception, says S Janakiraman, one of the co-founders of MindTree Consulting, it was realised at MindTree that implanting ethical corporate values was absolutely essential for long-term strategic success. While their mission statement — ‘Deliver business-enabling solutions and technologies by creating partnerships with our customers in a joyous environment for our people’—is the unifying force between the business and its customers, their DNA—Imagination, Action and Joy — nurtures and aligns people, and builds the emotional and psychological ecology of the organisation. Their value statement —‘We are a Caring, Learning, Achieving, Sharing and Socially responsible organisation (CLASS)’— connotes integrity …
