Biosecurity: Moving Toward A Comprehensive Approach, Laura A. Meyerson, Jamie K. Reaser Jul 2002

Biosecurity: Moving Toward A Comprehensive Approach, Laura A. Meyerson, Jamie K. Reaser

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Biosecurity itself is more than a buzzword; it is the vital work of strategy, efforts, and planning to protect human, animal, and environmental health against biological threats. The primary goal of biosecurity is to protect against the risk posed by disease and organisms; the primary tools of biosecurity are exclusion, eradication, and control, supported by expert system management, practical protocols, and the rapid and efficient securing and sharing of vital information. Biosecurity is therefore the sum of risk management practices in defense against biological threats. (NASDA 2001, p. 1

The Impact Of Computer Security Regulation On American Companies, Dean William Harvey, Amy White Jul 2002

The Impact Of Computer Security Regulation On American Companies, Dean William Harvey, Amy White

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Since the mid 1990's, e-business and electronic communication have spread rapidly and widely throughout the United States. According to one study, the majority of the U.S. population, fifty-four percent, used the Internet in September 2001, up twenty-six percent from the year before. Companies are targeting their e-business efforts to reach this expanding customer base. By entering the world of e-business, companies can benefit from lower transaction costs, improvement in the time to take products to market, cost savings in inventory and supply chain reduction, improved communications, and the ability to outsource organizational tasks such as payroll and customer-relations management. Cost …

The world of environmental security is bringing the science of natural resources in ever-closer contact with the policy issues of international stability and foreign affairs. Many U.S. and international agencies—including the U.S. Departments of State and Defense, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Southern African Development Community— now analyze foreign policy in part through the lens of environmental resources. In October 2001, three organizations—the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security; the Department of Geosciences of Oregon State University; and the Cooperative Monitoring Center (CMC) at

Sandia National Laboratories—sponsored a workshop designed to highlight the closeness of …

Inflammation-Dependent Cerebral Deposition Of Serum Amyloid A Protein In A Mouse Model Of Amyloidosis, Jun-Tao Guo, Jin Yu, David Grass, Frederick C. De Beer, Mark S. Kindy

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

The major pathological hallmark of amyloid diseases is the presence of extracellular amyloid deposits. Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an apolipoprotein primarily produced in the liver. Serum protein levels can increase one thousandfold after inflammation. SAA is the precursor to the amyloid A protein found in deposits of systemic amyloid A amyloid (AA or reactive amyloid) in both mouse and human. To study the factors necessary for cerebral amyloid formation, we have created a transgenic mouse that expresses the amyloidogenic mouse Saa1 protein in the brain. Using the synapsin promoter to drive expression of theSaa1 gene, the brains of transgenic …
