Effect Of Duration Of Performance Test On Variance Component Estimates For Lamb Growth Rate, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective was to determine the effect of periods of adjustment and duration of performance test on estimating genetic variance parameters for ADG. Variance components were estimated from ADG data collected from 1978 to 1984 on a total of 1,047 Targhee ewe and ram lambs at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station (Dubois, ID). Across all years, lambs averaged 84 ± 9 d of age and 25 ± 5.4 kg of weight when placed on test. Lambs were provided ad libitum access to a commercial pellet of barley grain and ground alfalfa for 14 wk. Every 2 wk, ADG was recorded. …

Customizing Conception: A Survey Of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis And The Resulting Social, Ethical, And Legal Dilemmas, Jason Christopher Roberts

Duke Law & Technology Review

One in six American couples experience difficulties conceiving a child. With fertility rates at an all time low, the business of treating infertility is booming. However, due to the United States prohibition on government funding for embryonic research, the $4 billion industry of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) has been incompletely monitored and largely removed from oversight. Additionally, due to the fervent abortion debate, in vitro fertilization (IVF) was introduced in the United States without a research phase and procedures have been forced to evolve in the private sector. Thus, the checks and balances on medical innovation that are generally imposed …

Exploring How Peer Feedback Affects Achievement And Mindset In The Middle School Art Room, Katie Bacon

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This action research project investigated the role of peer feedback on achievement and mindset in two 7 th grade art classes. The students participated in a six-week study that occurred during two different units of study. Students received direct instruction on growth versus fixed mindset based on Dweck’s research, as well as instruction on what feedback is and how to provide it. Data was collected through pre- and post-surveys, classroom observation, and student artifacts, such as peer review sheets and photographs of student work. The findings showed that participating in the feedback cycle with peers resulted in a greater trust …

Regulation Of Retinoic Acid Receptor Α By Protein Kinase C In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells, Goran Boskovic, Dinakar Desai, Richard M. Niles Jul 2002

Regulation Of Retinoic Acid Receptor Α By Protein Kinase C In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells, Goran Boskovic, Dinakar Desai, Richard M. Niles

Biochemistry and Microbiology

We have previously found that retinoic acid stimulates the expression of protein kinase Cα (PKC) in B16 mouse melanoma cells. Because it has been reported that PKC can phosphorylate retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and alter its function, we determined whether changes in the level and/or activity of PKC could affect the expression or function of the RAR in B16 melanoma. Using in vivophosphorylation and band shift techniques, we could not demonstrate that altering PKC activity and/or protein level changed thein vivo phosphorylation of RARα. However activation of PKC resulted in increased RARα protein. Increased receptor protein correlated with …
