Examination Of Small Mammal Diversity In The Riparian Areas Of Walden, Tennessee, Forrest Brown Vanderbilt
Examination Of Small Mammal Diversity In The Riparian Areas Of Walden, Tennessee, Forrest Brown Vanderbilt
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Vanderbilt, Forrest B. Examination of Small Mammal Diversity in the Riparian Areas of Walden, Tennessee Thesis under the direction of Robert D. Keller, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biology It has been hypothesized that riparian zones are prime conservation habitats and can be used as indicators of general ecosystem health (Montgomery 1996). Riparian zones, comprising a range of habitat types, typically exhibit higher biotic diversity when compared to adjacent upland hardwood forests (Batzli 1977, Cross 1985a, Cross 1985b, Doyle 1985, Knopf et al. 1988, Doyle 1990, Naiman and Decamps 1997, Ellison and van Riper III 1998, Olson and Knopf 1998). Adolescent Drinking And Driving: A Descriptive And Intervention Study, Emalee M. Fields
Adolescent Drinking And Driving: A Descriptive And Intervention Study, Emalee M. Fields
Masters Theses
Given the high rates of alcohol use and abuse among adolescents in our society, it is not surprising that drinking and driving is also relatively common. This paper starts with a summary of national statistics, which is followed by a critical review of previous interventions. The purpose of this project was to attempt to find an effective drinking and driving intervention for high school students which was relatively inexpensive, less time intensive than past interventions and required little or no training for the facilitator to present. Two related intervention conditions (a video only intervention and a slightly more extensive package …

The Perceptions Of Selected Tribal College Transfer Students Attending The University Of North Dakota, Donna L. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the perceptions transfer students from Tribal Colleges have upon entering The University of North Dakota regarding their own readiness for a four-year institution. This study sought to find out what could be done at the tribal colleges, at UND, and what the institutions could do collaboratively to improve the success of tribal college transfer students. Eleven students participated in the study. They were first semester transfers coming directly from tribal colleges who had transferred in at least 45 semester credits and with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. …

Foundation Resource Guide: A Compilation Of Major Foundations That Sponsor Activities Relevant To College-Community Partnerships, Office Of University Partnerships
Higher Education
This guide was prepared by the Office of University Partnerships (OUP), an office established by HUD in 1994 to encourage and expand the efforts of colleges and universities that are striving to make a difference in their communities. The original version of this publication was developed as a resource for grantees under HUD’s Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) Program. OUP now administers seven university and college programs serving a broad range of institutions of higher education. The foundations described in this guide are national foundations that likely will fund the kinds of projects OUP grantees are undertaking.

Weir River Area Of Critical Environmental Concern: Natural Resources Inventory, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston
Urban Harbors Institute Publications
The Weir River Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) was designated by the Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs in 1986 in recognition of one of the largest and most productive salt marsh ecosystems in the Boston Harbor area. As an ACEC, the region is afforded additional attention and protection from state agencies in order to achieve the goals of designation--to restore, enhance, and manage the resources. The region was nominated by residents of the abutting communities of Hull, Hingham, and Cohasset who took the opportunity to call attention to the uniqueness of the environment and to their concerns that development …
The Rights Of Animals: A Very Short Primer, Cass R. Sunstein
The Rights Of Animals: A Very Short Primer, Cass R. Sunstein
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Do animals have rights? Almost everyone believes in animal rights, at least in some minimal sense; the real question is what that phrase actually means. By exploring that question, it is possible to give a clear sense of the lay of the land—to show the range of possible positions, and to explore what issues, of theory or fact, separate reasonable people. On reflection, the spotlight should be placed squarely on the issue of suffering and well-being. This position requires rejection of some of the most radical claims by animal rights advocates, especially those that stress the “autonomy” of animals, or …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Following primary ocular infection, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) establishes a lifelong latent infection in sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglia. Latency-associated transcript (LAT), the only known viral gene abundantly transcribed during HSV-1 neuronal latency, is required for high levels of reactivation. Recently we showed that three different mutants that do not alter the LAT promoter but contain deletions within the 5′ end of the primary LAT transcript affect viral virulence (G. C. Perng et al., J. Virol. 75:9018-9028, 2001). In contrast, in LAT-null mutants viral virulence appears unaltered (T. M. Block et al., Virology 192:618-630, 1993; D. C. …

Software Patents: What One-Click Buy And Safe Air Travel Have In Common, Michael Guntersdorfer
Duke Law & Technology Review
Have you ever sat in an airplane, typing on your laptop, when the darn thing crashes for the one-millionth time? Have you ever then thought about how the airplane you are sitting in is controlled by software, too--the technical term being "fly by wire"--and then started sweating uncontrollably? Software controls not only air traffic but plenty of other safety-critical technologies: the tightrope walk of controlling the chain reaction of radioactive elements in nuclear power plants; the navigation and activation of missiles;3 the moves and cutting-depth of a surgical laser when correcting eye-sights; the list goes on... With such reliance on …

Hispanic Psychology: A 25-Year Retrospective Look, Amado M. Padilla
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Hispanic psychology has its roots in ethnic psychology and in cross-cultural psychology. The basic premise is that it is a valuable enterprise both theoretically and empirically to study the behavior of Hispanics. Over the past 25 years, research in Hispanic psychology has given way to a new scholarship or paradigm that calls for the recognition of intragroup variation which values within-group comparisons rather than relying exclusively on between-group effects. Acculturation and biculturalism have taken on special significance in Hispanic psychology. Further, Hispanic psychology must also consider the effects of racism and oppression on people and how these affect ethnic identity, …

Objective:
To study the significance of oligoclonal bands in neurological disorders, specifically in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Methods:
The study was designed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the test methodology of CSF electrophoresis by performing the retrospective analysis of CSF samples sent for oligoclonal bands (OCB). A total of 603 samples were received by the Clinical Laboratories, Department of Pathology of The Aga Khan University, during a period of 54 months (January 1993-June 1997). All of these samples were analyzed by performing CSF protein electrophoresis. One hundred thirty three out of 603 samples showed evidence of OCB. Out …

Counseling And Naturopathy: Exploring Collaboration Between Counseling And An Alternative Medical Model, Cheryl M. Milde, Diane Dempsey Marr
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
Given a higher incidence of many common chronic conditions, the management of “difficult to heal” clients has given counseling a greater role within medical circles. Since many of these chronic conditions may be a result of environmental exposure to pathogens, the role of alternative or natural healing approaches has become increasingly popular. This paper provides a brief overview of the naturopathic medical model, and examines counselors’ collaboration with an alternative medical model with regard to professional counselor practice, training, and ethics.
Effects Of Acculturation And Generational Status On Ethnocultural And Psychosocial Adaptation Of Mexican-American Adolescents, Darrell W. Stolle, William E. Martin Jr.
Effects Of Acculturation And Generational Status On Ethnocultural And Psychosocial Adaptation Of Mexican-American Adolescents, Darrell W. Stolle, William E. Martin Jr.
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
The extent to which acculturation and generational status affect the ethnocultural and psychosocial adaptation of Mexican-American adolescents was investigated. Participants were classified into acculturation and generational status levels from scores on the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican-Americans-Revised (ARSMA-II) and the dependent variable was measured using the Psychosocial Adaptation for Cultural and Contextual Correspondence-Research Version (PACCC-RV). Mexican-American adolescents with lower acculturation levels and more recent residence in the United States perceived they were ethnoculturally different from others in their environment especially in regards to communication difficulties. Similar to previous studies, acculturation and generational status appear to be measuring similar dimensions.

The ovicidal activity of eight isolates of entomopathogenic hyphomycetes was evaluated in the laboratory against Maruca vitrata and Clavigralla tomentosicollis. At a concentration of 1 × 108 conidia ml-1, four isolates (Beauveria bassiana CPD 3 and 10, and Metarhizium anisopliae CPD 5 and 12) were found to be highly pathogenic to eggs of M. vitrata, achieving 89-100% mortality. At a given concentration, three isolates (B. bassiana CPD 9 and M. anisopliae CPD 5 and 12) were highly pathogenic to eggs of C. tomentosicollis, achieving 91-94% mortality. These isolates also caused high larval and nymphal mortality (94-100% in M. vitrata and …

Availability Of Organochlorides And Accumulation In Populations Of Tadarida Brasiliensis (Free-Tailed Bat) And Eptesicus Fuscus (Big Brown Bat), Michelle Lee Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Organochlorides were historically effective in controlling a wide range of pests. However, organochlorides have proved to present many problems to the health and welfare of other organisms. Due to these problems, especially declines in wildlife populations, organochlorides were restricted in the 1970's and a majority of them were banned in the mid to late 1980's. The effects of organochlorides on bats such as Tadarida brasiliensis and Eptesicus fuscus have been intensively studied. The effects can range from problems with reproduction to mortality. My analysis of populations of T. brasiliensis and E. fuscus showed that organochlorides are still present in the …

Using The Index Of Biotic Integrity Of Fish Communities To Evaluate Habitat Quality In Middle Chattahoochee River Tributaries, Theodor W. Roever
Theses and Dissertations
An ichthyological survey was conducted within the lower Piedmont and upper Coastal Plain physiographic regions of the middle Chattahoochee River drainage basin between August 1998 and September 2000. Sampling was conducted by Columbus State University (CSU) under contract to Columbus Water Works for the purpose of obtaining biological measurements of watershed health. Objectives of the survey were the establishment of a data baseline of IBI scores for this ecoregion and to ascertain if there was a correlation between the IBI score and human influence. The thesis to be tested is: 'Fish community IBI scores of different watersheds within the Middle …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis details the land use history of the Holly Springs National Forest. A description of the physical environment and a narrative cultural history of the area from the arrival of people into the North Central Hills are included. Archaeological survey data, soils data and witness tree locations were brought together using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology and analyzed in an ecological framework.
An environmental reconstruction using witness tree locations and soil types served as a platform for the delineation of environmental zones in which presettlement tree cover was estimated and compared with previous environmental studies of the area. Prehistoric …

The need to accurately assess the use and suitability of elk (Cervus elaphus spp.) habitat at regional scales will continue to increase as human development encroaches into what was once optimum elk habitat. The objectives of this research were to calculate the relative proportions of habitat use by elk in the Pine Ridge region of Northwestern Nebraska from a set of radio-collared elk locations and generate a habitat suitability model. Habitat variables (Iandcover type, aspect, slope, distance to a road, road density, and distance from the ponderosa pine edge) were measured for each elk location (n = 5,787 dating …

Rock-Salting The Slippery Slope: Why Same-Sex Marriage Is Not A Commitment To Polygamous Marriage, James M. Donovan
Rock-Salting The Slippery Slope: Why Same-Sex Marriage Is Not A Commitment To Polygamous Marriage, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
E.J. Graff has documented how any change in the marriage rules inevitably leads to predications of apocalyptic cries warning of "death of marriage and civilization itself." The conservative fit over the possibility of the social acceptance of same-sex marriage therefore has an ancient if repetitive script. Still, the "threat" of same-sex marriage poses for conservatives at least one atypical wrinkle. Unlike discussions of equal or even greater rancor, that raging over same-sex marriage forces its opponents to treat with special delicacy. In the case of abortion, opponents are able to argue in absolute terms: abortion is wrong, period, even if …
