Learners' Lives: A Narrative Analysis, Heather J. Richmond
The Qualitative Report
Learner's lives, a narrative impulse, establishes the importance of stories, provides an illustrative example of the analysis of an adult learner's story. The paper provides a step-by-step account of how a researcher conducted a narrative analysis and developed an organizational structure useful for other researchers.

A Principled Complementarity Of Method: In Defence Of Methodological Eclecticism And The Qualitative-Quantitative Debate, Andy Roberts
The Qualitative Report
I found PhD study to be a stimulating, challenging and ideal conduit for exploring knowledge via discussion, argument and defence: to have the opportunity to explore method, methodology, epistemology, ontology and what may constitute 'acceptable' research practice is an enriching experience. I had previously heard of intepretivists decrying positivists et cetera, but I was unprepared to find quantitative researchers and lecturers openly dismissing qualitative approaches, and finding dismissals by qualitative researchers of the use of a quantitative approach: such are disappointing and confusing to a trainee researcher. Thus, a far less enriching experience for a trainee researcher is being faced …

The Nature And Scope Of Intra-Cultural Variation On Psychological Dimensions, Anu Realo, Jüri Allik
The Nature And Scope Of Intra-Cultural Variation On Psychological Dimensions, Anu Realo, Jüri Allik
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Much of the research in cross-cultural psychology is done using countries (national cultures) as main units of comparison, disregarding other important characteristics of the participants such as their ethnicity, language, religious or territorial affiliation. Thus, despite the fact that there exist clearly distinguishable sub-cultures within many countries or national cultures, they are often regarded as uniform and homogenous entities in cross-cultural research. In many cases, as we will argue in this paper, such approach is rather justifiable. In doing so, however, one should always be aware of large intra-cultural diversity which can be found in many countries all around the …

An Automated Coronary Artery Occlusion Device For Stimulating Collateral Development In Vivo, Richard Rys, John F. Ladisa, John P. Tessmer, Weidong Gu, Judy R. Kersten, David C. Warltier, Paul S. Pagel
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction: Repetitive, brief coronary artery occlusions produce collateral development in experimental animals. This model causes coronary collateralization in a highly reproducible fashion, but the process is very labor intensive. We report the design and use of a fully automated hydraulic coronary occlusion device capable of producing repetitive coronary occlusions and enhancement of coronary collateral development in dogs.
Methods: The device consists of analog electronics that allow adjustment of occlusion number, frequency, pressure and duration, and mechanical components responsible for the coronary occlusion. The motor and piston of the device are coupled to a chronically implanted hydraulic vascular occluder …
The Rehnquist Court, Structural Due Process, And Semisubstantive Constitutional Review, Dan T. Coenen
The Rehnquist Court, Structural Due Process, And Semisubstantive Constitutional Review, Dan T. Coenen
Scholarly Works
Semisubstantive review, as I use that label, entails four key features. First, the subject matter of judicial inquiry is not the process applied in adjudicating a discrete dispute; rather, the matter at hand is the constitutionality of a statute or other generalized expression of legal policy. Second, some procedural omission by the lawmaker -- rather than an incurably substantive flaw in the end product of its work -- lays the groundwork for a judicial intervention that invalidates the challenged rule or negates how that rule otherwise would operate. It may be, for example, that a federal statute read as a …

The Myths And Truths That Ended The 2000 Tmdl Program, Linda A. Malone
Pace Environmental Law Review
The Total Maximum Daily Load program of section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act has always met with resistance and opposition from state governments in implementation. The TMDL program provides a process for identifying waters that fail to satisfy state water quality standards to impose additional limitations. This article reviews the checkered and troubled history of the program since 1972 and examines the states' criticisms of the program for their validity. The controversy over the TMDL program is viewed against the backdrop of the problem of nonpoint source pollution. Nonpoint source pollution continues to be the primary source of contamination …

The Quiet Revolution Redux: How Selected Local Governments Have Fared , David L. Callies
Pace Environmental Law Review
Professor David Callies notes two significant trends since "the Quiet Revolution" and "The Taking Issue" were written in the early 1970's: (1) local land use controls have not "withered away" and many local governments are increasingly able to regulate the use of land through better plans and planning, and more sophisticated local ordinances (including environmental controls); (2) federal courts have reentered the regulatory takings arena, striking down several regional and state-wide land use controls on constitutional grounds. For both reasons, he suggests that local land use controls are an excellent arena to regulate development of all but the truly state-wide …

Providing A Way Station: A Study Of The Joint Apna Ghar -The Enterprising Kitchen Program To Provide Employment Services To Immigrant Women Victimes Of Domestic Violence, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Christine George, Rafah Abuinnb
Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works
This report examines an innovative partnership designed to assist the employment needs of immigrant women who are survivors of domestic violence. In late 1999 a partnership was formed between The Enterprising Kitchen (TEK) and Apna Ghar, two organizations that are located in Chicago’s Uptown community. Apna Ghar, which provides services including shelter and counseling to South Asian immigrant women, sought client assistance from TEK, an intensive employment training program for women who are very marginal to the labor force. This report examines the first eighteen months of the partnership in which Apna Ghar referred twelve women to TEK’s training slots. …

Capacity-Building For Health Research In Developing Countries: A Manager's Approach, Franklin White
Capacity-Building For Health Research In Developing Countries: A Manager's Approach, Franklin White
Community Health Sciences
Research may be viewed as rigorous inquiry to advance knowledge and improve practices. An international commission has argued that strengthening research capacity is one of the most powerful, cost-effective, and sustainable means of advancing health and development. However, the global effort to promote research in developing countries has been mostly policy driven, and largely at the initiative of donor agencies based in developed countries. This policy approach, although essential, both contrasts with and is complementary to that of research managers, who must build capacity "from the ground up" in a variety of health service settings within countries and with differing …

Report On The Situation Of Refugees In Yemen: Findings Of A One-Month Exploratory Study, Nesya H. B. Hughes
Faculty Journal Articles
The refugee situation in Yemen is of interest to academics and field professionals working on migration in the Arab world for a host of reasons. Yemen has the Arabian Peninsula’s largest non-Palestinian refugee population . Yet, despite the apparent magnitude of the refugee population in Yemen, little field research has been conducted on this country and its refugee situation. In addition, the Republic of Yemen is the first and only country in the Arabian Peninsula to have signed the 1951 Convention and its 1967 Protocol. Regardless, Yemen is hindered from fulfilling its international obligations because it is simultaneously one of …

From Edison To The Broadcast Flag: Mechanisms Of Consent And Refusal And The Propertization Of Copyright, Randal C. Picker
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Encryption propertizes copyright. Prior to the rise of encryption, intellectual property wasn’t really property. Instead, these rights consisted of rights to sue to block use or seek damages for after-the-fact use. Encryption makes possible before-the-fact limits on use of the sort that we associate with physical property. Copyrighted works are becoming real property in a way that will never happen for trademarks or patents. This essay traces the role of consent and refusal for copyrighted works in the context of mass media entertainment. Early phonograph and movie projector manufacturers sought to limit the use of the equipment to specified music …
Caregivers' Experiences Of Informal Support In The Context Of Hiv/Aids, Premilla D'Cruz
Caregivers' Experiences Of Informal Support In The Context Of Hiv/Aids, Premilla D'Cruz
The Qualitative Report
Social support is an important buffer for family caregivers of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHIV/AIDS). With limited formal support options, these caregivers have to rely increasingly on informal networks. Yet, accessing this avenue is also fraught with difficulty due to the stigmatising nature of HIV infection. Research in this area is not just not sparse, but focusses largely on sources of support and the circumscribing effects of stigma. To further our understanding, a qualitative study was conducted using various concepts from social support theory. Twelve family caregivers in Mumbai, India, were interviewed, using the in-depth interview method. An iterative, thematic …

Role Of High School Teachers In Swedish Psychology Education: A Phenomenological Study, Torsten Norlander, Alexander Blom, Trevor Archer
The Qualitative Report
A descriptive, qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews involving six high school teachers of psychology was carried out in order to ascertain the factors contributing to the outcome of education in the discipline. The Empirical Phenomenological Psychological method (EPP-method) was used. Eighteen categories of "meaning units" were derived from the analysis of the interview materials and are described together with representative quotations taken directly from the raw material. Didactic image but also school leadership, governors, politicians and students all influenced content, organisation and teaching of the psychology course, which is viewed not only as an autonomous subject in its own right …
