Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

This field study examined the influence of moderate intensity training on gait patterns and work capacity of individauls with fibromyalgia syndrome (FS). FS is a chronic condition of unknown etiology, characterized by muscle tenderness, pain and stiffness and often accompanied by depression and fatigue which seems to occur primarily in middle aged females. There is no known cure for FS but treatment often includes a prescription of mild exercise. Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of mild exercise on work capacity and gait patterns in FS patients. Participants were 14 females (age 47.0±7.6 y) who participated in a 10 wk …

Puerto Rico: State Formation In A Colonial Context, Pedro Caban Dec 2002

Puerto Rico: State Formation In A Colonial Context, Pedro Caban

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship

This article examines U.S. Puerto Rico relations during the American century through the prism of the colonial state and identifies eight periods of fundamental political and economic change that altered the conduct of U.S. colonial practice in Puerto Rico. These periods witnessed the emergence, ascendancy and decline of local political coalitions that competed for control of the control state. The coalitions articulated distinct economic projects and pursued different strategies to resolve Puerto Rico's status as an unincorporated territorial possession. Each period was also marked by insular economic restructuring precipitated by shifts in U.S. fiscal policies and changes in the economy, …

Using Gis For Forest Recreation Planning On The Longleaf Ridge Special Area Of The Angelina National Forest, East Texas, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Publications

Longleaf Ridge Special Area (LRSA) located in the Angelina National Forest is the westernmost example of a longleaf pine savanna community. Ecologically, the area is one of the most diverse communities in Texas. Due to its size, abundant natural and historical resources, numerous outdoor recreation opportunities exist. In this study, GIS was used to develop a forest recreation concept plan on LRSA. Most of the geospatial data came from public entities. Information for demand analysis on forest recreation was obtained from the 2000 National Survey on Recreation and the Environment database. U.S. Forest Service recreation fee envelope data were analyzed …

Predicting The Readability Of Transparent Text, Lauren F. V. Scharff, Albert J. Ahumada Jr. Dec 2002

Predicting The Readability Of Transparent Text, Lauren F. V. Scharff, Albert J. Ahumada Jr.

Faculty Publications

Will a simple global masking model based on image detection be successful at predicting the readability of transparent text? Text readability was measured for two types of transparent text: additive (as occurs in head-up displays) and multiplicative (which occurs in see-through liquid crystal display virtual reality displays). Text contrast and background texture were manipulated. Data from two previous experiments were also included (one using very low contrasts on plain backgrounds, and the other using higher-contrast opaque text on both plain and textured backgrounds). All variables influenced readability in at least an interactive manner. When there were background textures, the global …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

To determine whether women participated in sport, even these young nulliparous female athletes, are more prone to have urinary incontinence in Taiwan. Four hundred and forty- six young female students were included in this study. All of them were nulliparous. Our subjects consisted of 260 varsity athletes, 106 athletes of high school, and 80 varsity non-athletes. They were requested to complete questionnaires on the type of major sport, intensity of training, menstrual history, sport injury, and urinary incontinence. The results showed that the athletes group had a greater body height and weight and a higher prevalence of urinary incontinence (10.0% …

Relationships Between Pain, Pain Behavior, Anxiety, And Muscle Tension During Electrodiagnosis, Yu-Cheng Pei, Simon F. T. Tang, Wei-Chi Hsieh, Ming-Che Chao, Alice M. K. Wong, Kai-Hua Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The purpose of the study was to investigate the interaction between pain, pain behavior, anxiety, and muscle tension during electrodiagnosis, and to examine the anxiolytic and pain-relieving effects of traditional Chinese music. Two measuring tools, including electrodiagnosis pain behavior checklist (EPBC) and electromyography muscle tension scale (EMTS) were developed to objectively assess the subject's pain and muscle tension, respectively. Sixty-one patients were included in this study and were randomly divided into background music group and control group. EPBC and EMTS were concurrently measured during electrodiagnosis, which consisted of nerve conduction velocity and electromyography (EMG) studies. Linear analog anxiety scale (LAAS) …

The Correlation Between Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome And Smoking, Cheng-Yi Li, Shou-Min Ni, Ding-Shun Ho, Shiou-Ping Lin, Huan Chiao, Kao-Chung Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) is a chronic painful syndrome, which may cause extreme pain and disability of the involved limbs of the patients. The unknown of causes of RSDS keep patients and clinicians from early prevention of this syndrome. Smoking may affect the sympathetic system. The purpose of this study was to find whether smoking has the prominent correlation with the morbidity of RSDS.This is a retrospective study by surveying the medical records of patients with RSDS admitted in Tri-Service General Hospital from January 1996 to December 2001. The possible trigger factors, lesion sites and the prevalence of smoking …
