CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The mission of the Work and Health Initiative funded by The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) was to improve the health of Californians by funding employment-related interventions. Fundamental to this Initiative was the perspective that important relationships between work and health are shaped by an evolving California economy. The goals of the Initiative were to (1) understand the rapidly changing nature of work and its effects on the health of Californians; (2) increase access to high quality employment for all Californians; (3) improve conditions of work for employed Californians; and (4) expand the availability of worksite health programs and benefits.

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

The New Microfinance: An Essay On The Self-Help Group Movement In India, Kim Wilson
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
Indian NGOs have created at least one million self-help groups with 17,000,000 members since the self-help group concept was developed by MYRADA in the late 1980s. India is unique in that banks are permitted to lend directly to unregistered self-help groups and by May 2001, banks and cooperatives had financed 461,478 of these groups, with almost 200,000 new self-help groups financed between May 2000 and May 2001, indicating an accelerated process of expansion. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) trains banks and refinances their loans. The key to NABARD's success is decentralization. Responsibility for group development and …

We investigate the effect of health insurance coverage on the decision of individuals to apply for Disability Insurance (DI). Those who qualify for DI receive public insurance under Medicare, but only after a two-year waiting period. This raises concerns that many disabled are going uninsured while they wait for their Medicare coverage. Moreover, the combination of this waiting period and the uncertainty about application acceptance may deter those with health insurance on their jobs, but no alternative source of coverage, from leaving work to apply for DI.
Data from the Health and Retirement Survey show that, in fact, uninsurance does …
