A Nebraska Success Story: The Tri-Cities, Bree Dority O'Callaghan Oct 2002

A Nebraska Success Story: The Tri-Cities, Bree Dority O'Callaghan

Business in Nebraska

The Tri-Cities-Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearneyhave defied what the first American explorer of the area predicted. In 1806 Zebulon Pike believed it would " ... become in time equally celebrated as the sandy desarts (sic) of Africa." In fact, the opposite is true. The TriCities area is one of the fastest growing in Nebraska.

How has this area become so prosperous? A review of growth in· the Tri-Cities and the surrounding area over the past half century reveals some key facts that tell the success story. This review considers the Tri-Cities' past, present, and future population growth.

Survival Analysis Of Internet Companies: An Application Of The Hazard Model, Khaled Elkhal Oct 2002

Survival Analysis Of Internet Companies: An Application Of The Hazard Model, Khaled Elkhal

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to develop a model that predicts failure and estimates the time of survival of dotcoms using a number of financial and non-financial factors. This model can be used as a warning tool for stockholders, creditors, and consumers to protect themselves from such failures.

I employ the Cox (1972) Proportional Hazards Model in a cross-sectional and time-varying context using financial data over the 1998–2001 period. Results from a cross-sectional analysis reveal that the coefficient estimates for variables CFTL and NSTA are consistently negative and highly significant. This suggests that higher sales and cash flows lower …

Critical Pedagogy As Organizational Praxis: Challenging The Demise Of Civil Society In A Time Of Permanent War, Peter Mclaren, Nathalia E. Jaramillo Oct 2002

Critical Pedagogy As Organizational Praxis: Challenging The Demise Of Civil Society In A Time Of Permanent War, Peter Mclaren, Nathalia E. Jaramillo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The writers criticize the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the ensuing military and political occupation of the country. They suggest a link between aggressive U.S. military posture and neoliberal globalization and contend that the current situation in Iraq is a metaphor for globalized capitalism across the world. The writers then consider issues surrounding the politics of organization in the search for a socialist alternative to free market capitalism and discuss how critical educators can reinvigorate the civil societarian left at a time when elites are less accountable to civil society than ever before.

Hazardous Heuristics, Cass R. Sunstein Oct 2002

Hazardous Heuristics, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

New work on heuristics and biases has explored the role of emotions and affect; the idea of “dual processing”; the place of heuristics and biases outside of the laboratory; and the implications of heuristics and biases for policy and law. This review-essay focuses on certain aspects of Heuristics and Biases: The Psychology of Intuitive Judgment, edited by Thomas Gilovich, Dale Griffin, and Daniel Kahneman. An understanding of heuristics and biases casts light on many issues in law, involving jury awards, risk regulation, and political economy in general. Some attention is given to the possibility of “moral heuristics”—rules of thumb, for …

Electric Field Enhanced Plasmid Delivery To Liver Hepatocellular Carcinomas, Richard Gilbert, Mark J. Jaroszeski, Loree Heller, Richard Heller Oct 2002

Electric Field Enhanced Plasmid Delivery To Liver Hepatocellular Carcinomas, Richard Gilbert, Mark J. Jaroszeski, Loree Heller, Richard Heller

Bioelectrics Publications

Electric field enhanced molecular delivery for cancer research and treatment is a new technology that has demonstrated its effectiveness in clinical trials using bleomycin or cisplatin (Heller, R., Gilbert, R., Jaroszeski, M. J. Clinical applications of electrochemotherapy, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews 35,119-129, 1999), as chemotherapeutic agents. The technology is being investigated in research applications for applicability as a method to enhance gene expression in a target tumor. Success is predicated on an appropriate effective electric field mediated delivery protocol that triggers significant appropriate gene expression duration and levels. An electric field mediated delivery protocol includes a set of conditions …
