False Labeling And Its Ramifications For Organic Food Product Markets, Konstantinos Giannakas Oct 2002

False Labeling And Its Ramifications For Organic Food Product Markets, Konstantinos Giannakas

Cornhusker Economics

Consumer concerns regarding the health and environmental effects of inputs used in conventional production systems (i.e., fertilizer, pesticides, etc.), coupled with rising living standards and/or subsidization of organic agriculture (i.e., case of the European Union (EU)), have resulted in the development of fast growing markets for organic food in several countries around the world. “Organic” refers to food produced through a process characterized by mandatory “soil building” crop rotations and absence of synthetic inputs. The lack of synthetic inputs results in reduced yields and, when compared to conventional food production, the production of organic food is more labor intensive

Origin And Neuronal Function Of In Vivo Nonsynaptic Glutamate, David A. Baker, Zheng-Xiong Xi, Hui Shen, Chad J. Swanson, Peter W. Kalivas

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Basal extracellular glutamate sampled in vivo is present in micromolar concentrations in the extracellular space outside the synaptic cleft, and neither the origin nor the function of this glutamate is known. This report reveals that blockade of glutamate release from the cystine–glutamate antiporter produced a significant decrease (60%) in extrasynaptic glutamate levels in the rat striatum, whereas blockade of voltage-dependent Na and Ca2 channels produced relatively minimal changes (0– 30%). This indicates that the primary origin of in vivo extrasynaptic glutamate in the striatum arises from nonvesicular glutamate release by the cystine–glutamate antiporter. By measuring [ 35S]cystine uptake, it was …

Topical Micronutrient Delivery System And Uses Of Thereof, Elaine L. Jacobson, Myron Jacobson, Jaber G. Qasem, Hyuntae Kim, Moonsun Kim

Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

The invention involves methods and compositions useful in delivering micronutrients to cells. By formulating the micronutrient in the form of an ester that is convertible to the active form of the micronutrient, one can combine it with a co-ester that inhibits esterases, so that the micronutrient can reach the targeted cells prior to degradation. Both methods and compositions are described.
