Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This investigation was carried out to determine the possibilities of sexing day-old Denizli Fowl by means of slow and rapid feathering characteristics. First generation birds (253) were classified according to their day-old wing feathering types as follows: 40 chicks had primaries longer than the covert feathers (rapid feathering), 81 chicks had primaries shorter than the covert feathers and 132 chicks had primaries equal to the coverts (slow feathering). By means of test crossings amongst the rapid feathering males and slow feathering females, 63 male and 49 female day-olds were obtained. The male group consisted of 5 rapid feathering and 58 …

The Effects Of Lead On The Small Intestinal Motility Of Guinea Pigs, Mehmet İri̇adam, Vedat Sağmanligi̇l
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, 18 adult guinea pigs, weighing 300-450 g, were divided into three equal groups, and their small intestinal segments (proximal and distal ileum) were removed and kept in vitro in an isolated organ bath in order to record the responses mainly produced by lead and acetylcholine. For the tissues of the first group, the noncumulative concentration-response curves of lead obtained were compared by applications at concentrations ranging from 3x10^{-8} M to 3x10^{-5} M alone, in the presence of verapamil (3x10^{-5} M) and in Ca^{++} free solution. In the second group, the responses to lead at the same concentrations …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted to determine the effects of different cage densities on laying performance of white and brown hybrid layers during high summer temperatures. White layers, 68 weeks of age, were housed at a density of 3, 4 or 5 hens/cage (respectively 640, 480 and 384 cm^2/hen); brown layers were housed at 3 or 4 hens/cage (respectively 640 and 480 cm^2/hen). The results indicated that housing at 3 or 4 hens/cage did not affect egg production or egg quality significantly. Increasing the cage density to 5 hens/cage in white layers decreased egg production and Haugh Units. However, it was …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, echocardiograpic examination was performed on 20 healthy New Zealand rabbits. All rabbits were examined by the color Doppler technique using a 5-7.5 Mhz transducer. Images were obtained from parasternal long axis, parasternal short axis, apical four-chamber and modified four-chamber sections. The anatomy and function of hearts were examined in each rabbit individually. The values obtained were not significantly different from those obtained in dogs and cats. In addition, the changes seen in the right ventricle parameters were consistent with the changes in the left ventricle parameters.

The Investigation Of The Anabolic Efficiancy And Effect On The Nonspecific Immune System Of Zeranol In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Walbaum), Oya Keleş, Akin Candan, Tülay Bakirel, Süheyla Karataş Düğenci̇
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Considering the relation between the endocrine and immune systems, the effects of zeranol, a synthetic oestrogen compound, on the growth rate and nonspecific immune system in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) were investigated. For this reason, fish were fed a diet containing 0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 ppm zeranol for 21 days. When the data was statistically analysed, the body length in the fish groups fed with 5, 10 and 20 ppm, and the body weight for those given 10 and 20 ppm zeranol, were found to be significantly higher than in the control group. The specific growth rate …

A Study On The Fattening Traits Of Sönmez Type Lambs, Mustafa Kaymakçi, Turgay Taşkin, Ercan Kizilay
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted to determine the fattening performance of Sönmez type lambs weaned on average at 60±5 days old. Sixty lambs were put into four different pens, as single males (15), single females (15), twin males (15) and twin females (15), and the fattening period was 56 days in length. The daily weight gains were 282.14 g, 242.49 g, 207.31 g and 179.99 g for single males, single females, twin males and twin females, respectively. The average daily weight gain in Sönmez type lambs was 227.98 g. Feed efficiency levels in Sönmez lambs were 3.98, 4.32, 4.49 and 4.63 …

This study was carried out an 21 male, 7-month-old, white New Zealand rabbits. The anterior cruciate ligaments in the stifle joints were excised in both knees under general anesthesia. At the end of the first month, 3 cases were sacrificed and were exposed to macroscopical, radiological and histopathological examinations to determine the occurrence of experimental osteoarthritis. In 18 cases, hyaluronic acid was injected into right stifle joints intraarticularly on the second and third months at a dose of 2mg/kg. Left stifle joints were considered to be control groups. At the end of the postoperative second month 9 cases and in …
