Application Of Gis As An Environmental Monitoring Tool For Ambient Air Quality, Poh Aun Tan
Student Works (2000-2009)
The purpose of this study is to utilize Geographic Information System tool for the purpose of developing a customized Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Tool (AMAQUM). A PC based ArcView GlS software was chosen for the purpose of constructing a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). This application was customized using an extensive Avenue scripting language associated with Dialog Designer in the ArcView environment. The AMAQUM developed consists of three main components or interfaces i.e. air quality modelling, ground level concentration and monitored ambient air quality. Firstly, the air quality modelling interface has the capability of running the ISCST3 air quality model …
Abiotic Stress Signalling In The Fucus Embryo, Susana Coelho
Abiotic Stress Signalling In The Fucus Embryo, Susana Coelho
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Fucoid algae live in the intertidal region where they experience daily fluctuations in light and external osmotic environment. High light, especially in combination with ultraviolet (UV) radiation and hyper-osmotic stress affected the cellular physiology of Fucus embryos. Two photoinhibition responses were recognised. Firstly, a rapid decline of the photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, linked with the operation of the xanthophyl cycle, followed by a slower decline correlated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. As a result of enhanced ROS production, a slower repair of the PSII efficiency was observed, particularly with increased UV-B doses. Development of the embryos was transiently affected …

Evaluation Of Radionuclide Induced Damage In Marine Invertebrates, Josephine Anne Hagger
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Limited studies have been carried out to assess the potential effects of ionising radiation on marine organisms. Therefore the general aims of this thesis were, (a) to assess the cytotoxic, genotoxic and developmental effects of ionising radiation on the embryo-larvae of two ecologically relevant marine invertebrates Mytilus edulis and Platynereis dumerilii, (2) to assess the effects of an environmentally relevant cocktail of radionuclides (3) to monitor the potential impact of radiation in the natural environment and finally (4) attempt to predict the potential effects of radiation at a population level. Following validation of developmental stages and mammalian based cytotoxic and …

UGBs are probably constitutional under Supreme Court Takings Clause precedent for two reasons. First, a UGB will rarely, if ever, cause a complete deprivation of economically beneficial use, and is thus unlikely to be a compensable "total taking" under Lucas and Palazzolo. Second, UGBs will generally not be compensable "partial takings" under the Penn Central balancing test, because they are typically justified by a legitimate state purpose (that of preventing the urbanization of rural areas) and will, if prudently drafted, rarely interfere with landowners' investment-backed expectations.

The Saga Of Susannah, A U.S. Remedy For Sex Trafficking In Women: The Victims Of Trafficking And Violence Protection Act Of 2000, Susan Tiefenbrun
Utah Law Review
This is a story about a young girl named Susannah. But it could be the story of any one of millions of women who are duped, drugged, and deceived each year into performing sex acts without their consent and under conditions they never could have anticipated. This Article examines some of the cultural, social, political and economic causes of the worldwide practice of sex trafficking and discusses ways to eradicate this contemporary form of slavery by incorporating economic theory.

Mass-produced objects and ideas permeate our lives, as more and more becomes reproducible on a grander scale with decreasing marginal cost.' The world is suffused with a common stream of products and practices that issue from a single corporate or governmental source. Downstream, the wave washes over large groups of people, with a pattern of similar but not identical consequences left in its wake.
Federal Courts, Overbreadth, And Vagueness: Guiding Principles For Constitutional Challenges To Uninterpreted State Statutes, Stuart Buck, Mark L. Rienzi
Federal Courts, Overbreadth, And Vagueness: Guiding Principles For Constitutional Challenges To Uninterpreted State Statutes, Stuart Buck, Mark L. Rienzi
Utah Law Review
As we have seen, both state courts and federal courts have misunderstood the scope of the federal courts' powers. Federal courts have wrongly feared that their judgments in overbreadth and vagueness cases will not be observed, and have reached out to completely enjoin the enforcement of statutes that may be valid at least in part. State courts, on the other hand, have wrongly feared that when a federal court has done just that, there was no future recourse because the law had been "struck down." Both fears are misplaced. A federal court has the same power to partially limit the …
Can An Unmarried Biological Father Recover His Child And Damages?, John A. Bluth
Can An Unmarried Biological Father Recover His Child And Damages?, John A. Bluth
Utah Law Review
In 1972, the United States Supreme Court found in Stanley v. Illinois' that a biological father' not married to the child's mother had a constitutional liberty interest under the Fourteenth Amendment that is "cognizable and substantial." Since that time, the legal system has struggled to define exactly what that interest is, and how to balance that interest against a state's legitimate interest in promoting the adoption of children born out of wedlock, preventing unnecessary complications of the adoption process, protecting the privacy interests of the biological mother, avoiding controversy, and ensuring that adoptions are final. States now often attempt to …

The Children Must [And The Timorous May] Stay At Home: Hawkins V. Peart, Brian A. Dominic
Utah Law Review
Recreational opportunities are a valuable source of income, tourism, and excitement in Utah. However, those who provide these activities often have difficulty securing reasonable and affordable liability insurance, and thus often require preactivity waivers of liability from their customers, both adults and children. This Note examines the Utah Supreme Court's recent decision in Hawkins v. Peart, in which the court invalidated a parent's preactivity release of liability on behalf of her child and an indemnity provision in a contract with a trail riding company. Parts II through V of this Note review the court's decision and analysis. Part VI analyzes …
Stem Cell Research: Is The Law Preventing Progress?, Jennifer L. Enmon
Stem Cell Research: Is The Law Preventing Progress?, Jennifer L. Enmon
Utah Law Review
On August 9, 2001, President George W. Bush announced a change in federal policy allowing federal money to fund embryonic stem ("ES") cell research on selected ES cell lines. Medical advancements in this new millennium, including new treatments for diseased and damaged cells, may hinge on the promises of stem cell research. Scientists believe that stem cells will provide treatments for diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, which have no effective treatment to date.' Moreover, stem cells may provide a cure for debilitating spinal cord injuries that leave victims paralyzed. However, because some stem cells are derived from embryonic and …

During the last decade, perhaps no public lands issue has been more controversial than the debate over wilderness designations on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. By the terms of the Federal Lands Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), wilderness areas can only be created on BLM lands if those lands are "roadless." As a result, much of the fight over wilderness designations has focused on roads. Wilderness advocates argue for a strict definition of roads-one that would not include old wagon trails, and would thereby open up more land for potential wilderness designation.' Wilderness opponents, on the other hand-often states …
Outrage, Cass R. Sunstein
Outrage, Cass R. Sunstein
Utah Law Review
Outrage is a common reaction to perceived wrongdoing. Those who feel outrage are often motivated to injure or punish wrongdoers, whether through violence, law, or otherwise. But how are legal outcomes affected by outrage? Inside and outside of law, how do people translate their outrage into more tangible penalties? How does group discussion affect outrage? Are groups more outraged than individuals or less so?

Utah Law Review
Would you want your family to live near a plant containing acetone, acetaldehyde, methylbutyrate, ethylcaproate, hexylacetate, methanol, acrolein, and croton aldehyde? Perhaps not. Responding to Americans' fears of exposure to scary-sounding and possibly dangerous chemicals, and prompted by a few high-profile industrial accidents, Congress in 1986 adopted a far-reaching system of chemical-release reporting dubbed the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI).' Some states have adopted environmental information programs of their own.
The Importance Of Behavioral Interventions And Stimulant Medication Effects On Reducing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Elizabeth Alvarez
The Importance Of Behavioral Interventions And Stimulant Medication Effects On Reducing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Elizabeth Alvarez
Graduate Research Papers
Overall, various avenues of research state that ADHD is a complex disorder that requires treatment by multiple modalities. Most research states that a combination of medication and behavior therapy is necessary to resolve the symptoms. It should be noted that the dose of stimulant medication prescribed to a child with ADHD should be adjusted based on the child's response to a behavioral intervention, as well as the combination of the behavioral and pharmacological treatments. Rapport et al. (1982), as well as others, have found that medication alone will not "cure" ADHD. But with multiple methods of treatment the symptoms will …
Retention In The Primary Grades, Joni Gunter
Retention In The Primary Grades, Joni Gunter
Graduate Research Papers
Every year children are retained because of teachers' recommendations. When teachers recommend retention, the major reason is that children are having difficulty keeping up with their peers, or they are not functioning at grade level on district or state tests. Teachers may also recommend retention if children are smaller than peers, immature, have a late birthday, have excessive absences as a result of illness, or a move, or when English is a Second Language. This study examined the benefits, problems, as well as alternatives to retention. Conclusions and recommendations were determined based on the written research on retention.
An Overview Of Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Young Children, Lisa Ludwig
An Overview Of Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Young Children, Lisa Ludwig
Graduate Research Papers
Young children can benefit from therapy to deal with disabilities, abuse, normal developmental issues such as famiily problems, and social-emotional issues. One approach to helping children manage psychological issues is bibliotherapy. In its simplest form, bibliotherapy can be described as the practice of using books in treatment, or helping with books (Pardeck & Pardeck, 1993; Pardeck & Pardeck, 1987). The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on bibliotherapy and to examine its possible applications, its effectiveness, and best practices in carrying out the intervention.

Developing A K-12 District Technology Plan, Greg Reese
Graduate Research Papers
Educational Technologies and technology integration into the curriculum have become hot topics in educational institutions and legislature across the country. Schools are scrambling to buy computers, install networks, buy software, and connect to the Internet. This interest in technology is rooted in various places: pressure from the state legislature and federal government, the business community, and parents in the district who see technology as necessary for their child's success (Lockwood, 1999).

A Rare Case Of Neonatal Hypotonia: Neonatal Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia, Ayhan Taşteki̇n, Rahmi̇ Örs, Behzat Özkan, Orhan Deni̇z
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Hypotonia is a serious physical finding in a newborn infant. Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH) is a rare cause of neonatal hypotonia. It is a defect of the glycine metabolism and has poor prognosis. We report a case of a newborn infant with NKH, presented with mild hypotonia and high creatine kinase values. NKH should be considered in a hypotonic newborn, especially if associated with acute deterioration, lethargy and seizures.

The Effects Of Fenthion On Lipid Peroxidation And Some Liver Enzymes: The Possible Protective Role Of Vitamins E And C, İrfan Altuntaş, Namik Deli̇baş
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The effects of fenthion on the serum activities of cholinesterase (ChE), enzymes concerning liver damage and lipid peroxidation (LPO), and the ameliorating effects of a combination of vitamins E and C against fenthion toxicity were investigated. The results of the in vivo experiment showed that fenthion caused a significant increase in LPO and the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and a significant decrease in the activities of ChE and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). In addition, treatment with a combination of vitamins E and C led to a significant decrease in LPO and …

Chronic Recurrent Appendicitis In Children: An Insidious And Neglected Cause Of Surgical Abdomen, Fati̇h Andiran, Sabri̇ye Dayi, Muzaffer Çaydere, Hüseyi̇n Üstün
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
In addition to the familiar acute inflammation of the appendix, chronic inflammation has long been a controversial disease entity. However, some recent reports announced that chronic recurrent appendicitis is by no means an established disease of the appendix. Therefore, we reviewed our appendectomies in children to determine the underestimated cases of chronic recurrent appendicitis and discuss this disease entity in children. The records of children who had undergone appendectomy upon initial clinical diagnosis of appendicitis were reviewed for a period of 42 months. Incidental appendectomies were excluded. The diagnoses of acute appendicitis, negative explorations and chronic recurrent appendicitis were made …

A Comparative Study Of The Clinical Aspects And Relationship Between Fractures Of Mandibular Angle And The Presence Of A Lower Third Molar, Mehmet Yaltirik, Cem Rüştü Tanyel, Bülent Kati̇poğlu
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Several authors have reported that the presence of teeth may be one of the determinants of mandibular fractures. Fracture of the jaw plays an important role in the practice of the oral surgeon. A number of factors contribute to the strength of the mandible. These include presence of active and strong musculature, the shape and thickness of the bone, and the presence or absence of teeth. The Deparment of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Istanbul University, managed 100 patients with mandibular factures between 1991 and 1999. The male to female ratio was 5.25/1 and the majority of patients …
