Do You See What I See? Gepn Student Journal Entries 1999-2002, Yale University School Of Nursing

Yale School of Nursing Alumni Newsletters and Magazines

In 1974, YSN opened it doors to a unique program, originally called the three-year non-nurse college graduate program. Today it ts called the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing or GEPN. Simply put, during GEPN, the students learn to become a nurse. They will be caring for patients by the end of the second week at YSN because this program models adult learning principles-make it real and they will remember and perform quicker; when taught in the clinical context, it is real. Our hope is that they will continue recording their experiences that will ultimately serve as a record of their …

Gouldner's Tragic Vision, James Chriss Jan 2002

Gouldner's Tragic Vision, James Chriss

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Classical literature, specifically ancient Greek philosophy and especially the study of Greek tragedy, is helpful in tracing out and understanding the transitions Alvin Gouldner made during his career as a sociologist. This article argues that a latent tragic orientation or vision existed during Gouldner's early career as a standout in the field of industrial sociology and that this tragic vision became manifest around 1962 as Gouldner was developing more and more strident denunciations of establishment sociology. This case study of Gouldner's career teaches a valuable lesson about the importance of the tragic vision in helping sociologists to understand the limitations …

Housing First: Documenting The Need For Permanent Supportive Housing, Susan Hertzler Burkholder, Kathryn W. Hexter

Five years ago, very few people would have believed that it was possible to end homelessness for the most marginalized Americans. Today, the idea that we can end the cycle of homelessness and institutionalization for vulnerable Americans is so mainstream that the Bush administration declared in its 2003 budget proposal that it considers “ending chronic homelessness in the next decade a top objective.” The key to this turnaround in thinking is supportive housing, an approach that is both smart and compassionate” according to a recent editorial in the New York Times. It is a concept that is proving to be …

Rational Approaches To The Regulation Of Nonprescription Medicines, Anand S. Achanta Jan 2002

Rational Approaches To The Regulation Of Nonprescription Medicines, Anand S. Achanta

Open Access Dissertations

In recent years, self-medication products have undergone a dramatic change due to the advent of herbal medicines, dietary supplements, nutraceuticals and health foods in addition to traditional nonprescription medicines and the increasing societal preferences towards greater individual control over the use of medicines. Globally, the role and importance of nonprescription medicines in healthcare delivery is also rapidly increasing due to the potential cost-savings. Hence, this area is beginning to receive much attention from regulatory authorities, academia and professional/industry/trade organizations.

This dissertation presents a comprehensive analysis of the classification of nonprescription medicines and Rx-to-OTC switch criteria/policy in the United States, United …

An Exploration Of The Nature Of Nursing Practice Related To The Presence Of Visitors In The Critical Care Setting, Mary E. Mcginn Farrell Jan 2002

An Exploration Of The Nature Of Nursing Practice Related To The Presence Of Visitors In The Critical Care Setting, Mary E. Mcginn Farrell

Open Access Dissertations

The need for and importance of visiting hours for relatives of critically ill patients has been well documented and passionately debated in the nursing literature for many years. Nurses tend to be the primary gatekeepers in the ICU yet little empirical knowledge exists related to the phenomenon of visiting from the perspective of the bedside nurse. A three-phase qualitative research investigation was undertaken with eight critical care nurses identified by managers as being experts at working with families. Data were gathered using participant observation, interviews and document review. Three research questions guided this investigation: (1) How do expert nurses incorporate …

Leftist Literature And The Ideology Of Eugenics During The American Depression, Sarah Catherine Holmes Jan 2002

Leftist Literature And The Ideology Of Eugenics During The American Depression, Sarah Catherine Holmes

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines both literary and non-literary works to illustrate how leftist writing was profoundly influenced by notions of eugenics which circulated widely in Depression-era America, though often just beneath the surface. One of the most popular movements during the Great Depression was the attempt to prove that certain groups of the American population were "unfit" and that society should take intentional steps to intervene in citizens' reproductive rights. This eugenics doctrine was so pervasive that it became embodied in a variety of texts, including many "leftist" texts, thereby producing an ideological crisis for many of these writers. Leftist literature …

The Nature Of Infant Relinquishment As Described By Two Voices: The Relinquishing Mother And The Obstetrical Nurse, Linda Jean Kobokovich Jan 2002

The Nature Of Infant Relinquishment As Described By Two Voices: The Relinquishing Mother And The Obstetrical Nurse, Linda Jean Kobokovich

Open Access Dissertations

Little is known about the relinquishment experience and nursing interventions for infant relinquishment. The purpose of this study was to first, describe in the birth mother's voice, the relinquishment experience and her perception of nursing interventions, while second, creating an inventory of nursing interventions. Kim's (2000) Practice Domain provided the theoretical background. This two-phase study used an inductive, qualitative approach and employed a mixed method design of semi-structured interview and focus group interview. The interview was crafted upon the interview style of McCracken (1988) and Spradley (1969) while focus group methodology as detailed by Morgan (1993, 1996) guided the second …

An Analysis Of The Predictive Power Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change Applied To Dietary Fat Intake, Julie A. Wright Jan 2002

An Analysis Of The Predictive Power Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change Applied To Dietary Fat Intake, Julie A. Wright

Open Access Dissertations

The present research was designed to advance the theory and science of health behavior change by evaluating one of the most commonly used behavior change theories, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). Two criteria were selected for evaluation, empirical adequacy (predictive power) and generalizability of the TTM to dietary fat intake. Predictive power was evaluated by testing evidence-based a priori predictions. Generalizability was evaluated by testing a priori predictions founded on smoking data and tested on diet data. Longitudinal data from a large scale randomized control trial on adults recruited from primary care practices were used to test a priori predictions of …

Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Latino And Latina College Students, Cecilia Maria Duarte Jan 2002

Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Latino And Latina College Students, Cecilia Maria Duarte

Open Access Dissertations

This study examines the ethnocultural and social factors, which impact the psychological well being and help-seeking behaviors among Latino and Latina client and non-client college populations. Latino/a help-seeking is commonly described as "crisis usage," and underutilization of counseling services has been attributed to cultural and social barriers. The underrepresentation of Latinos in higher education and in counseling centers nationally has led to speculation, of the ethnocultural perceptions of help-seeking among Latino and Latina college students. This research utilized quantitative methods in two studies to address the lack of comprehensive examination of this crisis phenomenon. The first study compared the presentation, …
