An Empirical Analysis Of Electronic Data Interchange (Edi) Implementation Benefits In Kentucky Small- And Medium-Sized Enterprises: Some Implications For New It Implementation, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

This paper reports that the benefits accrued from implementing and integrating Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can be conceptualized into two factors. First, firms derive operational/tactical benefits by predominantly focusing on increasing internal utility of this technology. Second, firms derive strategic benefits from EDI in the form of better external relationships and alliances with trading partners and an enhanced ability to compete in their market. Among other significant findings, there are clear indications from the correlation statistics reported here that experience with EDI, industrial category of a firm and the level of ED! integral ton …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Lung Function And Aerobic Capacity In People With Asthma., Pat Flanagan Jan 2002

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Lung Function And Aerobic Capacity In People With Asthma., Pat Flanagan

Theses

The prevalence of asthma is rapidly increasing throughout the world. Many developed countries have reported a greater incidence and severity of asthma in both adults and children (Woolcock and Peat, 1997). Up to 90% of those diagnosed with asthma will experience some asthma symptoms during or after exercise. This condition is known as Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA). The severity of the bout of EIA depends mainly on the type, intensity and duration of the exercise session. Environmental conditions, medication and possibly the level of fitness of the individual may also influence EIA (Storms and Joyner, 1999; Guill, 1996; Weiler, 1996).

Crime And Consciousness: Science And Involuntary Acts , Deborah W. Denno Jan 2002

Crime And Consciousness: Science And Involuntary Acts , Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

This Article confronts this clash between legal and scientific perspectives on consciousness by proposing new ways to structure the voluntary act requirement so that it incorporates the insights of modern science on the human mind. Part I examines the criminal law's voluntary act requirement, particularly in the context of the MPC's influential provision, which reflects the law and psychology of the era in which the MPC was originally developed--the 1950s. Part II analyzes the new science of “consciousness,” a term that typically refers to the sum of a person's thoughts, feelings, and sensations, as well as the everyday circumstances and …

Identifying Hrd Value Perspectives Held By Hrd Professionals In The Rochester, New York Area, Michael J. Postilli

Education Masters

In 200 1, the research team of Reid Bates, Chen Chih, and Time Hatcher conducted an international study with 84 members of the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) using a set of six HRD related values measures to assess the value perceptions of the members as they related to the HRD process. The goal of their study was to see if a more normative statement about what HRD is or should be could be created. In 2002, this study. which replicates the 2001 international study, was conducted to determine if (a) the underlying values of HRD professionals in the …

The Distress Thermometer: Validity In A General Cancer Population, Carole S. Moretz

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This work reports on the psychometric properties of a new measure designed to screen for distress in large populations of cancer patients. The Distress Thermometer (Holland et al., 2000) was tested in a group of 239 heterogeneously diagnosed cancer patients. It was found to be internally consistent (a= 0.86) and to exhibit a reliable eight-factor solution. It displayed acceptable concurrent validity (p ≤ 0.0001) when compared to the Rotterdam Symptom Checklist (deHaes et al., 1994), the Functional Living Index Cancer (Schipper et al., 1984) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (Derogatis, 1993). It was also found to be a sensitive measure …

The distribution and function of aquaporins (AQPs) have not previously been defined in sweat glands. In this study, AQP1, AQP3, and AQP5 mRNA were demonstrated in rat paw by reverse transcription (RT)–PCR, but AQP2 and AQP4 were not. AQP1, AQP3, and AQP5 protein were confirmed in these tissues by immunoblotting. AQP1 was identified in capillary endothelial cells by immunohistochemical labeling, but not in sweat glands or epidermis. Abundant AQP3 expression was seen in basal levels of epidermis, but not in sweat glands. AQP2 and AQP4 were not observed in either skin or sweat glands. Immunohistochemical labeling revealed abundant AQP5 in …

The Effects Of Acculturation Level On Verbal Learning In A Sample Of Hispanics Of Mexican-American Extraction, Anita S. Blair

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study is interested in the relationship of acculturation to performance on verbal learning tasks. The hypotheses of the study are that as acculturation to Anglo American culture approaches assimilation, total recall scores on the California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLT-II) will increase and performance on a nonsense word task will not significantly correlate with acculturation level. A review of the literature on acculturation and test bias in Hispanic populations is followed by research on bilingual performance on memory tasks. As the independent variable, acculturation is examined on three levels: Mexican Oriented, Bicultural Oriented and Anglo Oriented using Scale One of …

Habitat Use Of Urban Bats In Springfield, Missouri, Sarah Jane Robertson Jan 2002

Habitat Use Of Urban Bats In Springfield, Missouri, Sarah Jane Robertson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

During the summers of 1998-2000, the Anabat II bat detector system was placed in a mosaic of habitats within Springfield, Missouri and surrounding rural areas in southern Missouri to compare the activity indices of nine bat species between urban and rural environments. A total of 1,876 echolocation call sequences was recorded, identified to species and analyzed; 1,066 were from 42 Springfield sites, and 810 were from 22 rural locations. For all species combined, urban bat activity tended to be higher than rural activity, but those differences were only significant at the reading taken 3 hours after sunset. Eptesicus fuscus activity …

Spectroscopic And Microscopic Characterization Of Nd3+ Uptake By Calcite, Sandra H. Withers Kirby Jan 2002

Spectroscopic And Microscopic Characterization Of Nd3+ Uptake By Calcite, Sandra H. Withers Kirby

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The local structure of metal impurity ions in minerals is important in determining their long-term stability in the environment. It is particularly important for understanding or predicting the migration of nuclear waste plumes in the subsurface. Calcite doped with Nd3 + ions is chosen as a model system. Calcite micro-crystals were grown from solution with single crystal dimensions up to 3 mm and doped up to ~0.1 atomic% with Nd3 + ions. Several methods are applied to determine the structure and doping of the crystals. Phase purity was verified by powder x-ray diffraction. The concentration of Nd3 + was measured …

Community Partnerships: A Case Study Of The Hamilton-Wentworth Supported Housing Coordination Network (Ontario), Jonathan S. Lomotey

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Community partnerships are growing in importance as means of improving social service delivery (Boudreau, 1991; MacGillivary & Nelson, 1998; McCann & Gray, 1986; Nelson, Prilletensky & MacGillivary, 2001; Wolff, 2001). Several research studies have identified them as effective means of intervention and for strengthening society (Nelson et al., 2001; Wandersman et al., 1996; Wolff, 2001). In this case study of the Hamilton-Wentworth Supported Housing Coordination Network, information was gathered from the participants in the partnership, documents and participant observation to reconstruct and analyze the partnership story. Current mental health housing policy in Ontario was also analyzed to determine its nature …

The Effect Of Changes In The Inhibitory Interneuron Connectivity On The Pattern Of Bursting Behavior In A Pyramidal Cell Model, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Piotr J. Franaszczuk, Gregory K. Bergey

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Inhibitory interneurons play crucial roles in the regulation of patterns of activity in the hippocampus, and some types are thought to be vulnerable in epilepsy. The connections between excitatory and inhibitory synapses are important for generation of bursting activity in pyramidal neurons. The present study investigates the influences of changes in the connectivity of interneurons on the patterns of bursting in several excitatory connections using a multicompartmental pyramidal cell model. Simulations show that bursting activity depends upon changes in the connectivity of the inhibitory interneuron, and the location of the inhibitory synapses on excitatory neurons.
