Ethnicity And Infant Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Stephen Obeng Gyimah Nov 2002

Ethnicity And Infant Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Stephen Obeng Gyimah

PSC Discussion Papers Series

This study is premised on the hypothesis that ethnic specific socio-cultural practices such as dietary taboos and food avoidances on mothers and infants, as well as perceptions of disease aetiology and treatment patterns may be salient to infant mortality differentials in Ghana. To inform policy the paper explores if there are significant ethnic differences in the risk of infant death, and whether such differences are due to intrinsic cultural norms or socio-economic disparities. Using data on 3298 recent births from the 1998 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, the bivariate results indicated significant ethnic differences. Relative to Asante children, the risk …

The Roles Of Companions In Geriatric Patient–Interdisciplinary Oncology Team Interactions, Laura L. Ellingson Nov 2002

The Roles Of Companions In Geriatric Patient–Interdisciplinary Oncology Team Interactions, Laura L. Ellingson

Gender and Sexuality Studies

This study examined companions' roles in interactions between patients and interdisciplinary geriatric oncology team members. Companions' roles identified include memory aid, emotional support, transcriber, aid in decision making, companionship, elaboration, advocate for patient, and interpreter. Specific patterns of variability of roles across team member disciplines include relatively passive companions who performed more active roles with physician, relatively active companions who performed more passive roles with physician, and relatively passive companions who performed more active roles when particular topics were raised, regardless of team discipline. Two patterns of stability across interactions emerged: consistently active or passive.

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Behavior Rating Inventory Of Executive Function (Brief) In A Clinical Sample, G. G. Gioia, P. K. Isquith, P. D. Retzlaff, K. A. Espy Nov 2002

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Behavior Rating Inventory Of Executive Function (Brief) In A Clinical Sample, G. G. Gioia, P. K. Isquith, P. D. Retzlaff, K. A. Espy

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Evidence for the validity of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000) based on internal structure was examined in a sample of children with mixed clinical diagnoses via maximum likelihood confirmatory factor analysis. Four alternative factor models of children's executive function, based on current theories that posit a unidimensional versus fractionated model (Rabbitt, 1997; Shallice & Burgess, 1991), using the revised 9-scale BRIEF configuration that separates two components of the Monitor scale, were examined for model fit. A 3-factor structure best modeled the data when compared directly with 1-, 2-, and 4-factor models. …

"Getting Into The Mouths" Of Preschoolers: A Method For Obtaining Buccal Samples For Later Genotyping, K. A. Espy, A. F. Hamby Nov 2002

"Getting Into The Mouths" Of Preschoolers: A Method For Obtaining Buccal Samples For Later Genotyping, K. A. Espy, A. F. Hamby

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

A new procedure is described by which to obtain buccal samples from preschool children for research investigations that include genotyping. Called the "Lollipop Tasting Game", the procedure involves three mason jars which were filled about halfway with water. Granulated sugar was added to each jar to make a noticeably sweet solution. Red food coloring was added to the first jar, a small bit of reconstituted lemon juice and yellow food coloring were added to the second jar, and finally, a bit of vanilla and blue food coloring were added to the last jar. The examiner dips cotton swabs in the …

Nebraska Moves Back On Track, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forecast Council Nov 2002

Nebraska Moves Back On Track, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forecast Council

Business in Nebraska

Nebraska did not fully partake in the 2001 national recession , but growth rates in retail sales, employment, and personal income were reduced. The reductions were due to a variety of causes that often were specific to a sector or group of sectors of economic activity. In some cases the growth in employment was restrained by labor availability. In other cases employment growth was restrained by the slow growth and recession in the national economy, especially its manufacturing sector. A falloff in tourism following the events of September 11 was partly to blame for the falloff in the growth rate …

Homosexuality In India: Past And Present, Ruth Vanita Nov 2002

Homosexuality In India: Past And Present, Ruth Vanita

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

When I was active in the women’s movement in Delhi from 1978 to 1990 as founding coeditor of Manushi, India’s first feminist journal, homosexuality was rarely if ever discussed in left-wing, civil rights, or women’s movements, or at Delhi University, where I taught. Among the earliest newspaper reports I saw on the subject were those about female couples committing suicide, leaving behind notes declaring their undying love. In 1987, the wedding of two female police constables, Leela and Urmila, in central India, made national headlines and led to a debate on lesbianism. The women married each other outside the ambit …

Nitrogen Loading Into An Urban Estuary: Lake Pontchartrain (Louisiana, U.S.A.), R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Dubravko Justic, Erick M. Swenson Nov 2002

Nitrogen Loading Into An Urban Estuary: Lake Pontchartrain (Louisiana, U.S.A.), R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Dubravko Justic, Erick M. Swenson

Faculty Publications

We constructed a nitrogen loading budget for the Lake Pontchartrain watershed located north of New Orleans, Louisiana (U.S.A.). Water quality measurements, discharge estimates, and literature values were used to establish the annual and seasonal variations in loading rates for total nitrogen and nitrate. The relatively stable annual loadings (million kg N) are about 10× that of the pre-settlement nitrogen loading, and come from atmosphere (1.3), the watershed (7.8), pumped urban runoff from New Orleans (1.0), and leakage through the Bonnet Carré flood control structure (0.5–0.9). Relatively minor additional amounts come from nitrogen fixation in the Lake. Occasional openings of the …

CRMEHC Faculty Papers

This cross-cultural study was designed to compare the attitudes of physicians and nurses toward physician–nurse collaboration in the United States, Israel, Italy and Mexico. Total participants were 2522 physicians and nurses who completed the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes Toward Physician–Nurse Collaboration (15 Likert-type items, (Hojat et al., Evaluation and the Health Professions 22 (1999a) 208; Nursing Research 50 (2001) 123). They were compared on the total scores and four factors of the Jefferson Scale (shared education and team work, caring as opposed to curing, nurses, autonomy, physicians’ dominance). Results showed inter- and intra-cultural similarities and differences among the study groups …

Building Transit Oriented Development In Established Communities, Sara J. Hendricks, Julie Goodwill

CUTR Research Reports

This report provides a synthesis of the steps that established car oriented communities have taken to transform into transit oriented communities. The report identifies several approaches, such as the use of transit oriented design, focusing transit oriented development (TOD) around park-and-ride lots, malting changes to land development regulations, parking management, offering development incentives, coordinating stakeholders, incorporating transit into future development/redevelopment, crafting TOD design guidelines, predesignating transit corridors, ensuring pedestrian and bicycle access, adapting transit services to the needs of suburban-style communities, offering location efficient mortgages and ideas for dealing with community resistance toward applying transit friendly measures to car oriented …
