Effect Of Processing Conditions On Microstructure Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends., Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of processing conditions on the crystallization of blends of a high-melting milk fat fraction and sunflower oil was investigated. Two cooling rates were selected for all studies: 0.1°C/min (slow rate) and 5.5°C/min (fast rate). Blends were crystallized in two conditions: (i) with agitation in an 80-mL crystallizer (dynamic), and (ii) on a microscope slide without agitation (static). The selected crystallization temperatures were 25, 30, and 35°C for both cooling rates. Photographs of the development of crystals with time were taken in both static and dynamic conditions, and the crystal size distribution was determined at the moment that the …

Constructive Criticism, Ronald C. Serlin Nov 2002

Constructive Criticism, Ronald C. Serlin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Attempts to attain knowledge as certified true belief have failed to circumvent Hume’s injunction against induction. Theories must be viewed as unprovable, improbable, and undisprovable. The empirical basis is fallible, and yet the method of conjectures and refutations is untouched by Hume’s insights. The implications for statistical methodology is that the requisite severity of testing is achieved through the use of robust procedures, whose assumptions have not been shown to be substantially violated, to test predesignated range null hypotheses. Nonparametric range null hypothesis tests need to be developed to examine whether or not effect sizes or measures of association, as …

Chronic Disease Data And Analysis: Current State Of The Field, Ralph D'Agostino Sr., Lisa M. Sullivan Nov 2002

Chronic Disease Data And Analysis: Current State Of The Field, Ralph D'Agostino Sr., Lisa M. Sullivan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Chronic disease usually spans years of a person’s lifetime and includes a disease free period, a preclinical, or latent period, where there are few overt signs of disease, a clinical period where the disease manifests and is eventually diagnosed, and a follow-up period where the disease might progress steadily or remain stable. It is often of interest to investigate the relationship between risk factors measured at a point in time (usually during the disease free or preclinical period), and the development of disease at some future point (e.g., 10 years later). We outline some popular designs for the identification of …

Teachers' Perceptions On Special Education Students' Social Skills And The Effect Of Peer Perceptions In The General Educational Classroom., Erin E. Harman

Theses & Honors Papers

This study identified inconsistencies between teachers' perceptions of students with disabilities and parallels between the lack of positive peer perceptions and the inconsistent perceptions of general and special education teachers. To establish data this study used a selective group of seventh grade general and special education teachers from a middle school in central Virginia. This study also used one general education classroom containing students with and without disabilities. General and Special Education teachers were surveyed using the Profile/ Form Walker-McConnell Scale of Social Competence and School Adjustment. Students used a modified version of the peer interpersonal assessment developed by Farmer, …

Energy And Environmental Integration Through A Green Municipality Designation, Florida Solar Energy Center, Eric Martin Nov 2002

Energy And Environmental Integration Through A Green Municipality Designation, Florida Solar Energy Center, Eric Martin

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Most local green building programs in existence seek to bestow a "green designation" on a builder, building owner, or developer with residential, commercial, and development standards. Municipalities, however, play an important role in making green building become "business as usual" rather than a conscious choice made by few. Municipalities can set an example to the community by incorporating green building techniques in the construction and operation of public and government buildings, play a vital role in community education, and can create incentives and mandates to foster green building within the community. Florida's green building program has set out to create …
