Cholesterol Has An Inflammatory Influence In The Effects Of Fats On Metabolism In Endotoxemic Rats, Hali̇t Tanju Besler, Robert Francis Grimble Jan 2002

Cholesterol Has An Inflammatory Influence In The Effects Of Fats On Metabolism In Endotoxemic Rats, Hali̇t Tanju Besler, Robert Francis Grimble

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We showed that butter suppresses metabolic responses to endotoxin in Wistar rats. Responses included increases in plasma caeruloplasmin and liver zinc and protein concentrations, and decreases in plasma zinc and albumin concentration. However, butter lost its suppressive effect at dietary concentrations above 90g/kg diet. The present study examined whether this phenomenon was due to the total dietary cholesterol intake rather than the intrinsic fatty acid composition of butter. Rats received diets, for four weeks, containing either 100g/kg corn oil, 90 g/kg butter, 190g/kg butter, or 90 g/kg butter supplemented with cholesterol to render the latter two diets identical in cholesterol …

Surface and build-up region doses of 6, 15 and 25 MV photon beams were investigated for several clinical setup parameters. Evaluated setups included open fields, physical wedge (PW) fields, virtual wedge (VW) fields and blocked fields. The effects of field size, acrylic block tray, source-to-surface distance (SSD) and off-axis distance on surface dose were determined for each of these setups. Siemens Mevatron MD2 (6-15 MV) and Mevatron-KD2 (6-25 MV) linear accelerators were used to measure both the surface and build-up region doses. The surface dose increased as field size increased in open fields. There was no significant difference between 6 …

The Effect Of Simvastatin Treatment On Plasma Ubiquinone, Blood Atp Concentrations, Total Antioxidant Capacity And Muscle Related Markers, Emel Alteki̇n, Banu Önvural, Canan Çoker, Sema Güneri̇, Sezer Çalişkan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It has been hypothesized that treating hypercholesterolemic patients with statins will lead not only to a reduction in cholesterol, but also to inhibited synthesis of other compounds that derive from the synthetic pathway of cholesterol. One important by-product is ubiquinone (CQ), which has a pivotal role in mitochondrial electron transport and antioxidant activity. We therefore investigated the effect of 2 months of simvastatin treatment (20 mg/day) on blood ATP concentration, plasma total antioxidant capacity and ubiquinone levels in 17 hypercholesterolemic patients (age range: 40 to 65). To evaluate the possible muscle-related side effects, plasma CK activity and myoglobin concentrations were …

Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Foundations

This paper reports the formative evaluation findings of a tobacco counter-marketing campaign and recommendations based on those findings. Focus groups were used w determine reactions to four messages for the Youth Against Tobacco (YAT) campaign. Participants aged eleven to eighteen years old, who resided in the metropolitan New Orleans area. were selected from area schools usiNg convenience sampling. Results indicated that while reactions w the messages were positive overall, some aspects of the messages seemed too complex to be used effectively in the campaign. These results helped to guide modification and selection of messages prior to use in the campaign.
