The Traffic In Women, Emma Goldman Jan 2002

The Traffic In Women, Emma Goldman

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This article originally appeared in print in 1910 and provides an historical perspective on the trafficking in women. Though it may seem to have been only recently discovered, the traffic in women has flourished for time immemorial. Structures of economic and social stratification directly produce the sale of bodies. Legislative remedies prove futile. The end of sexual trafficking requires both the replacement of outdated values regarding sex and gender, and the abolition of industrial slavery.

The Sex Slave Trade: Biological Imperatives, Cultural Trends, And The Coming Empowerment Of Women, Helen Fisher Jan 2002

The Sex Slave Trade: Biological Imperatives, Cultural Trends, And The Coming Empowerment Of Women, Helen Fisher

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The sex slave trade has been in existence for at least two thousand years. This phenomenon derives from the brain mechanisms controlling the three primary brain circuits for human mating: lust, romantic attraction, and attachment. These brain mechanisms enable humans to control and direct their interest in sexual novelty: capable of both enabling and ending the predation which flourishes as the international sex slave trade.

Sex Tourism And The Child: Latin America's And The United States' Failure To Prosecute Sex Tourists, Kathy J. Steinman Jan 2002

Sex Tourism And The Child: Latin America's And The United States' Failure To Prosecute Sex Tourists, Kathy J. Steinman

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The international tourism industry drives the world's economy and often provides a potential solution to the economic problems of developing countries. Since the 1960s, international travel has increased seven-fold. It is estimated that by 2010, the number of international tourists will be 967 million. However, there is a darker side to the tourism industry, which delves into the realm of child prostitution and exploitation, namely sex tourism. Child sex tourism is an incredibly lucrative, worldwide industry. In recent years, Central and South America have become the new "playground" for sexual predators seeking children as their prey. This note focuses on …

A Matter Of Normative Judgment: Brentwood And The Emergence Of The "Pervasive Entwinement" Test, Michael A. Culpepper

University of Richmond Law Review

The Fourteenth Amendment remains the great Rorschach test of one's underlying jurisprudential beliefs. For those of a "progressive" bent, the amendment is a "sweeping mandate," while those more inclined toward powdered wigs and judicial formalism criticize the amendment as an instrument of "freewheeling judicial] lawmaking." It is a philosophical impasse, one that centers around the apparently ambiguous prohibition against deprivations of due process and denials of equal protection. Unfortunately, the strictures from the high court and Congress remain equally ambiguous-particularly in the realm of state action. Metaphors, such as "winks and nods," "sifting facts and weighing circumstances " and "under …

The Blurry Line Between "Mad" And "Bad": Is "Lack-Of-Control" A Workable Standard For Sexually Violent Predators?, Georgia Smith Hamilton Jan 2002

The Blurry Line Between "Mad" And "Bad": Is "Lack-Of-Control" A Workable Standard For Sexually Violent Predators?, Georgia Smith Hamilton

University of Richmond Law Review

In January 1993, thirty-one-year-old Michael Crane entered a tanning salon in Johnson County, Kansas and exposed himself to the nineteen-year-old female attendant. Thirty minutes later, he entered a nearby video store and waited for all of the customers to leave. Once the store was empty, Crane exposed himself to the twenty-year-old female clerk, threatened to rape her, grabbed her by the back of the neck, and demanded that she perform oral sex on him. He then suddenly and abruptly stopped the attack and ran out ofthe store.

Troponin-Tropomyosin: An Allosteric Switch Or A Steric Blocker?, Andrea M. Resetar, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Joseph M. Chalovich Jan 2002

Troponin-Tropomyosin: An Allosteric Switch Or A Steric Blocker?, Andrea M. Resetar, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Joseph M. Chalovich

Faculty Publications

The interaction of myosin subfragment 1 (S1) with actin-tropomyosin-troponin (regulated actin) is highly nucleotide dependent. The binding of S1 or S1-ADP (but not S1-ATP nor N,N′-ρ-phenylenedimaleimide-modified S1-ATP) to regulated actin activates ATP hydrolysis even in the absence of Ca2+. Investigations with S1 and S1-ADP have led to the idea that some actin sites are directly blocked toward the binding of S1 either by tropomyosin or troponin. The blocked state is thought to occur only at ionic strengths greater than 50 mM. The question is whether nonactivating S1 binding is blocked under the same conditions. We show that troponin inhibits binding …
