Social Networks And Hiv Transmission: The Contextual Dynamics Of Hiv Risk Behaviors, Karen L. Robinson Jan 2002

Social Networks And Hiv Transmission: The Contextual Dynamics Of Hiv Risk Behaviors, Karen L. Robinson

International Journal of Global Health

Despite advances in public health, biomedical, and social sciences, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), continues to proliferate. HIV is spread by exposure to infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions. HIV transmission most commonly occurs because of sexual activities, through the sharing of contaminated needles and other drug paraphernalia, and less frequently, from infected mothers to their newborns (CDC, 2001). From the first reported in case in June 1981 through June 2001, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 793,026 cases of AIDS. The CDC estimates that 650,000 to 900,000 Americans …

The Challenge Facing Parents And Coaches In Youth Sports: Assuring Children Fun And Equal Opportunity, Douglas E. Abrams Jan 2002

The Challenge Facing Parents And Coaches In Youth Sports: Assuring Children Fun And Equal Opportunity, Douglas E. Abrams

Faculty Publications

Youth sports today brings both good and bad news. The good news is that organized sports programs enhance the vitality of communities large and small because twenty-five to thirty million children, nearly half of all American youngsters, join at least one program in any given year. At some time during their childhood and adolescence, nearly all children have some experience with organized sports. Outside the home and schools, no other activity reaches so many children from coast to coast.

Developing An Intelligent User Manager System For Controlling Smart School Network Resources, Abdullah Gani, H. Mouratidis, N.S. Abouzakhar, G.A. Manson

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper presents an Intelligent User Manager System (UMAS) for controlling access to network resources in a Smart School network. Network resources, especially in a Smart School, are in short supply and relatively expensive to acquire, therefore a control mechanism should be in place so that available resources can be allocated for legitimate usages only. An intelligent mechanism using Fuzzy Logic is deployed for the purpose of knowledge learning in order to process all the user requests accordingly. A decision of granting a network resource request needs to be based on several data sets that represent the current network state, …

Pcr-Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism (Sscp) Analysis Of Salmonella Typhi And Other Salmonella Serovars, S. Nair, Kwai Lin Thong, T. Pang, M. Altwegg

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and PCR¨Csingle-strand conformation polymorphism(PCR-SSCP) analyses were carried out on the 1.6-kb groEL gene from 41 strains of 10 different Salmonella serovars. Three HaeIII RFLP profiles were recognized, but no discrimination between the serovars could be achieved by this technique. However, PCR-SSCP analysis of the groEL genes of various Salmonella serovars produced 14 SSCP profiles, indicating the potential of this technique to differentiate different Salmonella serovars (interserovar differentiation). Moreover, PCR-SSCP could differentiate strains within a subset of serovars (intraserovar discrimination), as three SSCP profiles were produced for the 11 Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis strains, and two …

Phosphorus Requirement Of Finishing Feedlot Calves, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein, C. T. Milton, Dennis Brink, M. W. Orth, K. M. Whittet

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Dietary P supplied to feedlot cattle is important because an inadequate supply will compromise performance, whereas excess P may harm the environment. However, P requirements of feedlot cattle are not well documented. Therefore, 45 steer calves (265.2 ±16.6 kg) were individually fed to determine the P required for gain and bone integrity over a 204-d finishing period. The basal diet consisted of 33.5% high-moisture corn, 30% brewers grits, 20% corn bran, 7.5% cottonseed hulls, 3% tallow, and 6% supplement. Treatments consisted of 0.16 (no supplemental inorganic P), 0.22, 0.28, 0.34, and 0.40% P (DM basis). Supplemental P was provided by …
