Integrated Agriscience And Career Awareness Curriculum For Elementary And Middle School Utilizing School Gardens, Lorie Susan Suntree Jan 2002

Integrated Agriscience And Career Awareness Curriculum For Elementary And Middle School Utilizing School Gardens, Lorie Susan Suntree

Theses Digitization Project

Agriculture is a one billion dollar industry in the state of California, yet science and agriculture are overlooked in elementary and middle schools. Instead, an emphasis is placed on writing, reading, and math, subjects that are tested at the state level. As a result, fourth and eighth graders in California placed 38th out of 41 in a National Science Assessment Test. In the spring of 2003, science will be included in the statewide test; therefore, elementary and middle school will have to address the subject of science and its impact on the school day. In 2002 the California State Board …

Correlation Of Stress And Predisposition In Onset Of Illness In Masters Of Social Work Students, Lloyd Gregory Jones, Cynthia Ann Plampin Jan 2002

Correlation Of Stress And Predisposition In Onset Of Illness In Masters Of Social Work Students, Lloyd Gregory Jones, Cynthia Ann Plampin

Theses Digitization Project

This study addressed the specific problem of whether there is a significant correlation between stress and the onset of predisposed disease. Because most graduate programs are stressful and it is known that several social work graduate students in one cohort at CSUSB were diagnosed with diabetes as well as migraines and depression, the population for this study was Master's of Social Work (MSW) students at California State University, San Bernardino, (CSUSB).

What Does 'Impact' Mean In The Evaluation Of Learning Technology, Jen Harvey, Martin Oliver Jan 2002

What Does 'Impact' Mean In The Evaluation Of Learning Technology, Jen Harvey, Martin Oliver

Journal Articles

Whilst many projects in Higher Education are expected to demonstrate their impact, quite what this requirement means is often left unspecified. This paper draws on the experiences of the EFFECTS project in an attempt to illuminate this issue. The EFFECTS evaluation framework is used to structure this discussion, which explores the complexities associated with identifying impact in terms of student learning, changes in practice for academics, changes within an organisation and national development. Common themes arising from these areas are then identified.

Essential Role Of The G-Domain In Targeting Of The Protein Import Receptor Attoc159 To The Chloroplast Outer Membrane, Jörg Bauer, Andreas Hiltbrunner, Petra Weibel, Pierre-Alexandre Vidi, Mayte Alvarez-Huerta, Matthew D. Smith, Danny J. Schnell, Felix Kessler Jan 2002

Essential Role Of The G-Domain In Targeting Of The Protein Import Receptor Attoc159 To The Chloroplast Outer Membrane, Jörg Bauer, Andreas Hiltbrunner, Petra Weibel, Pierre-Alexandre Vidi, Mayte Alvarez-Huerta, Matthew D. Smith, Danny J. Schnell, Felix Kessler

Biology Faculty Publications

Two homologous GTP-bindin proteins, atToc33 and atToc159, control access of cytosolic precursor proteins to the chloroplast, at Toc33 is a constitutive outer chloroplast membrane protein, whereas the precusor receptor atToc159 may be able to switch between a soluble and an integral membrane form. By transient expression of GFP fusion proteins, mutant analysis, and biochemical experimentation, we demonstrate that the GTP-binding domain regulates the targeting of cytosolic atToc159 to the chloroplast and mediates the switch between cytosolic and integral membrane forms. Mutant atToc159, unable to bind GTP, does not reinstate a green phenotype in an albino mutant (ppi2) lacking …

Health Disparities, Neil Macnaughton Jan 2002

Health Disparities, Neil Macnaughton

International Journal of Global Health

"Americans believe that we are a classless society, largely because just about everyone thinks they are members of the struggling middle class. In actuality the United States is a highly stratified society in terms of wealth, meaning that we have a much more significant problem of poverty than most industrialized nations. Members of ethnic minorities are more likely to be poorer and less powerful. Racist beliefs on the part of the dominant white ethnic groups exacerbate the problem of socioeconomic inequality (Brown, 1998 p. 259)." In healthcare we like to believe that we do not discriminate amongst patient populations and …

Fables Of The Cuyahoga: Reconstructing A History Of Environmental Protection, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2002

Fables Of The Cuyahoga: Reconstructing A History Of Environmental Protection, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

On June 22, 1969, just before noon, an oil slick and assorted debris under a railroad trestle on the Cuyahoga River caught fire. The fire attracted national media attention, and helped prompt the passage of federal environmental laws. A river on fire was a symbol of earth in need of repair, and federal regulation was the reparative tool of choice. Much of the Cuyahoga story is mythology, however, a fable with powerful symbolic force. The river did burn in 1969 - as it and other rivers had burned many times before - and today the Cuyahoga and many U.S. rivers …
