The Clinical Observation Of Biventricular Pacing In Patients With Congestive Heart Failure, Wei Hua, Xin Chen Jan 2002

The Clinical Observation Of Biventricular Pacing In Patients With Congestive Heart Failure, Wei Hua, Xin Chen

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Congestive heart failure is one of the leading health problems in medicine. Intraventricular conduction delay is associated with contraction abnormalities, prolonged mitral regurgitation and a shortened left ventricular filling time in patients with conduction defects and dilated cardiomyopathy. Biventricular pacing is a promising new strategy for correcting the ventricular activation sequence and potentially improving myocardial function and clinical outcome in patients with congestive heart failure. Uncontrolled and controlled studies have shown that biventricular pacing could help to improve patients by at least one functional class, increases the 6-minute walk distance by 20-40%, and improves quality of life (as assessed by …

Update On The Treatment Of Hypertension, Bernard Man-Yung Cheung Jan 2002

Update On The Treatment Of Hypertension, Bernard Man-Yung Cheung

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Despite recognition of the dangers of untreated and uncontrolled hypertension, it is still widely and persistently under-treated in the community. New Technologies, Human-Microbe Interactions, And The Search For Previously Unrecognized Pathogens, David A. Relman Jan 2002

New Technologies, Human-Microbe Interactions, And The Search For Previously Unrecognized Pathogens, David A. Relman

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Evidence suggests that a significant number of clinically important microbial pathogens remain unrecognized. Observations from the natural world, from patterns of disease in human populations, from the bedside, and from the clinical laboratory all contribute to this body of evidence. A variety of acute and chronic neurologic syndromes illustrate this point; despite features of infection, most cases of aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, and cerebral vasculitis cannot be assigned a microbiologic diagnosis. The development and clinical application of molecular methods have led to the discovery of novel members of the endogenous normal flora as well as putative disease agents. Current challenges include …
