BACKGROUND
From June 30, 1998, through March 21, 1999, several patients in the surgical intensive care unit of a hospital acquired Serratia marcescens bacteremia. We investigated this outbreak.
METHODS
A case was defined as the occurrence of S. marcescens bacteremia in any patient in the surgical intensive care unit during the period of the epidemic. To identify risk factors, we compared patients with S. marcescens bacteremia with randomly selected controls. Isolates from patients and from medications were evaluated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. The hair of one employee was tested for fentanyl.
RESULTS
Twenty-six patients with S. marcescens bacteremia were identified; …

Moving Beyond Product Innovation In Tourism: Benefits And Challenges, Mary O'Rawe
Moving Beyond Product Innovation In Tourism: Benefits And Challenges, Mary O'Rawe
Books / Book chapters
Many difficulties still exist in translating innovation theories into action in the tourism industry. A substantial literature base is now in place addressing innovation typologies and methodologies and assessing organisational structures, cultures and sizes. Despite this, transferring leading-edge research on organisational innovation and creativity into pragmatic strategies for tourism enterprises has not been fully successful. The most cited and obvious form of innovation is product innovation. It is on this basis that the success of organisations is often judged. In tourism, this criterion for measuring innovativeness is flawed. It encourages companies to spend heavily on visible product changes, often at …

I have always believed that a life worth living includes two necessary components: passion and connection. I experience those components both in my work and in my personal life. I love the passion I find in my work - both in my advocacy efforts to advance justice in the world and in the teaching through which I try to pass on to others …
Immune Tolerance After Delivery Of Dying Cells To Dendritic Cells In Situ, Kang Z. Liu, Tomonori Iyoda, Marzena Saternus
Immune Tolerance After Delivery Of Dying Cells To Dendritic Cells In Situ, Kang Z. Liu, Tomonori Iyoda, Marzena Saternus
Publications
Peripheral immune tolerance is believed to be induced by the processing and presentation of self-tissues that die during physiologic tissue turnover. To examine the mechanism that mediates tolerance, we injected mice with dying syngeneic TAP-/- splenocytes loaded with small amounts of the protein antigen, ovalbumin (OVA). After ingestion and presentation of cell-associated OVA by the CD8+ subset of dendritic cells in situ, large numbers of antigen-reactive, CD8+ T cell receptor (TCR) transgenic T lymphocytes were driven into cell cycle, but then the T cells were deleted. The animals were also tolerant to challenge with OVA in complete …

Critical to the function of Ag-presenting dendritic cells (DCs) is their capacity to migrate to lymphoid organs and to sites of inflammation. A final stage of development, termed maturation, yields DCs that are strong stimulators of T cell-mediated immunity and is associated with a remodeling of the cell surface that includes a change in the levels of expression of many molecules, including chemokine receptors. We show in this study that CCR3, a chemokine receptor initially discovered on eosinophils, is also expressed by human DCs that differentiate from blood monocytes, DCs that emigrate from skin (epidermal and dermal DCs), and DCs …

The Cd8+ Dendritic Cell Subset Selectively Endocytoses Dying Cells In Culture And In Vivo, Tomonori Iyoda, Susumu Shimoyama, Kang Z. Liu
Publications
Dendritic cells (DCs) are able in tissue culture to phagocytose and present antigens derived from infected, malignant, and allogeneic cells. Here we show directly that DCs in situ take up these types of cells after fluorescent labeling with carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester (CFSE) and injection into mice. The injected cells include syngeneic splenocytes and tumor cell lines, induced to undergo apoptosis ex vivo by exposure to osmotic shock, and allogeneic B cells killed by NK cells in situ. The CFSE-labeled cells in each case are actively endocytosed by DCs in vivo, but only the CD8+ subset. After uptake, all of …

Preparation Of Clinical-Grade Recombinant Canarypox-Human Immunodeficiency Virus Vaccine-Loaded Human Dendritic Cells, Mary A. Marovich, John R. Mascola, Michael A. Eller
Publications
Preclinical data are reported that support a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine strategy using recombinant canarypox-HIV vectors (ALVAC-HIV) to load human dendritic cells (DCs) with HIV antigens. Clinical-grade DCs were infected with good manufacturing practice-grade ALVAC-HIV vaccine constructs. ALVAC infection, HIV gene expression, and DC viability and function were monitored by use of immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, blastogenesis assays, antigen-specific interferon (IFN)-γ enzyme-linked immunospot assay, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay protein detection. The vaccines infected both immature and mature DCs, and intracellular HIV-1 Gag protein was detected within hours. ALVAC-HIV induced DC maturation that was mediated by tumor necrosis factor-α and induced …
Endogenously Expressed Nef Uncouples Cytokine And Chemokine Production From Membrane Phenotypic Maturation In Dendritic Cells, Davorka Messmer, Jean M. Jacqué
Endogenously Expressed Nef Uncouples Cytokine And Chemokine Production From Membrane Phenotypic Maturation In Dendritic Cells, Davorka Messmer, Jean M. Jacqué
Publications
Immature dendritic cells (DCs), unlike mature DCs, require the viral determinant nef to drive immunodeficiency virus (SIV and HIV) replication in coculture with CD4+ T cells. Since immature DCs may capture and get infected by virus during mucosal transmission, we hypothesized that Nef associated with the virus or produced during early replication might modulate DCs to augment virus dissemination. Adenovirus vectors expressing nef were used to introduce nef into DCs in the absence of other immunodeficiency virus determinants to examine Nef-induced changes that might activate immature DCs to acquire properties of mature DCs and drive virus replication. Nef expression …

Effectiveness Of Colors Used On Safety And Health Signs For Communicating Severity Of Injury, Andrew M. Mccammack, Roger C. Jensen
Effectiveness Of Colors Used On Safety And Health Signs For Communicating Severity Of Injury, Andrew M. Mccammack, Roger C. Jensen
Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene
Signs are used extensively in workplaces and on products to identify hazards and provide instructions for appropriate behavior. A fundamental element of these signs is the signal-word panel located at the top of the sign. The colors and words in this panel are intended to convey information about the hazard identified. One type of hazard information concerns the severity of injury/illness associated with the hazard. The standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for facility signs uses three severity categories: 1) death or serious injury, 2) minor or moderate injury, and 3) property damage. The standard specifies which signal-word …

Case Study Of An Ergonomics Training Program For Nursing Home Workers, Roger C. Jensen
Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene
This paper describes a case study of a labor-based ergonomics-training program that makes use of some effective worker training methods. The program focus was on ergonomics awareness and back injury prevention for nursing home workers. It was developed and conducted by a not-for-profit organization affiliated with the Service Employees International Union. Training methods included the train-the-trainer model and the small group activity method. The investigation also compared the program components with those identified by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as being key elements in effective safety training.

Safety And Health Sign Colors And Signal Words For Communicating Information On Likelihood And Imminence Of Threat, Roger C. Jensen, Andrew M. Mccammack
Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene
Signs are used extensively in workplace facilities and on products to identify hazards and provide instructions and safety information. A fundamental component of these signs is a signal-word panel located at the top of the sign. Certain colors and signal words in this panel are intended to convey information about a hazard, including likelihood of harm and imminence of the threat. The purpose of this study was to determine if young adults without prior training on safety signs associate signal words and color with likelihood of harm and imminence of the threat. The sample population consisted of 59 college students. …
