Targeting Emotion In Early Stoicism, Scott M. Rubarth
Targeting Emotion In Early Stoicism, Scott M. Rubarth
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
The Stoic sage is a cold, heartless being who would not grieve over the loss of a beloved companion or child. Unmoved, unemotional, uncaring, the sage is an ethical and emotional monstrosity hiding behind the pretension of the so-called virtues of detachment and austerity. That, at least, is how many who study Stoic ethics perceive the sage in regard to his/her emotional life. In this paper I will argue that this conception of the Stoic theory of emotion and passion is misleading; emotions, in fact, are central to Stoic ethics and apatheia should not be confused with the contemporary idea …

Desperately Seeking Common Ground: The Emergence Of Design Management In Greece, A. Yagou, V. Tsironi
Desperately Seeking Common Ground: The Emergence Of Design Management In Greece, A. Yagou, V. Tsironi
DRS Biennial Conference Series
“Common ground,” defined as the “ability to communicate across fields,” provides the background for this paper. Communicating across fields is very significant in the design domain in general and particularly in design management, as both areas are highly interdisciplinary. The paper traces the “common ground” theme in the contemporary practice of design and design management in the Greek context. The state of Greek design is briefly presented and then the issue of design management is discussed through a number of interviews with related professionals. The cultivation of a common ground, by all parties involved, appears to be a crucial factor …

Women In Managerial Positions In Greek Education: Evidence Of Inequality, Anastasia Athanassoula-Reppa, Manolis Koutouzis
Women In Managerial Positions In Greek Education: Evidence Of Inequality, Anastasia Athanassoula-Reppa, Manolis Koutouzis
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This article deals with the under-representation of women in managerial positions in Greece. While substantial progress has been made in terms of the legal framework that ensures equal rights to both men and women in the country, evidence shows that there are barriers that inhibit women from pursuing and taking such positions, resulting to covert discrimination.

On Some Control Structures In Hellenistic Greek: A Comparison With Classical And Modern Greek, Brian D. Joseph
On Some Control Structures In Hellenistic Greek: A Comparison With Classical And Modern Greek, Brian D. Joseph
Linguistic Discovery
Control Structures in Ancient Greek typically involved infinitival complementation while in Modern Greek, finite complementation is the rule. Hellenistic Greek provides an interesting "way-station" between these two types of complementation, inasmuch as it is both chronologically and structurally transitional. In this contribution to the historical syntax of Greek, an analysis is offered of control structures in Hellenistic Greek, tracing the transition from the Ancient Greek type to the Modern Greek type. Based on the evidence of these three stages of Greek and the developments that the language shows with regard to innovations in the form and properties of control structures, …
Coelum Britannicum: Inigo Jones And Symbolic Geometry, Rumiko Handa
Coelum Britannicum: Inigo Jones And Symbolic Geometry, Rumiko Handa
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Inigo Jones's interpretation that Stonehenge was a Roman temple of Coelum, the god of the heavens, was published in 1655, three years after his death, in The most notable Antiquity of Great Britain, vulgarly called Stone-Heng, on Salisbury Plain, Restored. King James I demanded an interpretation in 1620. The task most reasonably fell in the realm of Surveyor of the King's Works, which Jones had been for the preceding five years. According to John Webb, Jones's assistant since 1628 and executor of Jones's will, it was Webb who wrote the book based on Jones's "few indigested" notes, on the recommendation …

Passaic Boys Are Hell: Robert Smithson's Tag As Temporal And Spatial Marker Of The Geographical Self, Felicity Colman
Passaic Boys Are Hell: Robert Smithson's Tag As Temporal And Spatial Marker Of The Geographical Self, Felicity Colman
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Robert Smithson seductively created stories about his activities as an artist with attention to his duration; his time of existence. Born in 1938 in the New Jersey suburb of Passaic, Smithson lived in the New Jersey suburbs of Rutherford and Clifton with his family until 1957 when he moved to live in downtown Manhattan, New York (Hobbs 1981, 231-232; Tsai 1991, 6). Smithson's adult life was undeniably shaped by his Pascalian/Sopranos awareness of engaging the circumference by which to navigate the centre of everyday life. In 1972 Smithson described New Jersey as: a kind of destroyed California, …

The Nightingale Sings Anew: The Appropriation Of Antiquity In Virginia Woolf's "The Waves", Neta Luree Hoff
The Nightingale Sings Anew: The Appropriation Of Antiquity In Virginia Woolf's "The Waves", Neta Luree Hoff
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis considers the impact of classical antiquity on the literary aesthetic of Virginia Woolf by focusing on the educational and theoretical assumptions that allowed Woolf to create her most experimental work, The Waves. Inspired by her brother Thoby Stephen and her tutor Janet Case, Woolf enjoyed a very strong and fertile relationship with the writers of antiquity, and she continued to return to them throughout her life for both conceptual and structural models. In her essays on the Greeks in particular, Woolf praises the ancients for achieving those things that she so longs to see accomplished in the works …
