Evaluating Terra-1 Modis Data For Discrimination Of Tropical Secondary Forest Regeneration Stages In The Brazilian Legal Amazon, Richard M. Lucas, Xiangming Xiao, Stephen Hagen, Steve Frolking Apr 2002

Evaluating Terra-1 Modis Data For Discrimination Of Tropical Secondary Forest Regeneration Stages In The Brazilian Legal Amazon, Richard M. Lucas, Xiangming Xiao, Stephen Hagen, Steve Frolking

Earth Sciences

We establish the potential of TERRA-1 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data for discriminating and mapping tropical secondary forest regeneration stages in the Brazilian Legal Amazon, in terms of both their age and pathway. In using MODIS data, many difficulties encountered in local to regional scale mapping and discrimination of regeneration stage using NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and fine spatial resolution Landsat/SPOT sensor data can be largely overcome.

Lessons From The Balkans For American Foreign Policy: Building Civil Society Within A Multilateral Framework, Henry H. Perritt Jr. Apr 2002

Lessons From The Balkans For American Foreign Policy: Building Civil Society Within A Multilateral Framework, Henry H. Perritt Jr.

Chicago Journal of International Law

The end of the Cold War left the world without a structure of international relations. The first Bush Administration briefly flirted with the vague idea of a New World Order. The Clinton Administration pursued a policy of selective intervention with an emphasis on development of civil society and human rights, as in Bosnia and Kosovo. The second Bush Administration came to office preaching disengagement, unilateral pursuit of US interests, suspicion of multilateralism, preoccupation with threats from China and Russia, and a determination to implement an unproven national missile defense system. In the war on terrorism, the Bush Administration arranged a …

Review Of Creating Colorado: The Making Of A Western American Landscape, 1860-1940 By William Wyckoff, Brian Page Apr 2002

Review Of Creating Colorado: The Making Of A Western American Landscape, 1860-1940 By William Wyckoff, Brian Page

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The history of Colorado has been well portrayed, but most often in geographical bits and pieces. What has been missing from this literature is a comprehensive view of how these constituents coalesce into a coherent picture of the formation and evolution of the state's geography of human production, settlement, movement, power, and meaning. William Wyckoff's Creating Colorado provides a panoptic view of Colorado's geographical history rendered in broad stokes and a fluid, eloquent prose.

Understanding Caesar’S Ethnography: A Contextual Approach To Protohistory, Erin Osborne Martin Apr 2002

Understanding Caesar’S Ethnography: A Contextual Approach To Protohistory, Erin Osborne Martin

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The Celts of western and central Europe1 flourished during the height of Greek and Roman civilization, and yet there is a methodological schism between the study of the Mediterranean world and that of the “peripheral” Europeans. Our appreciation of classical society stems primarily from the plentiful written texts – texts that provide us with minute details of society, religion, and politics from the words of the people who actively participated in that culture. The study of the Celts, on the other hand, is more oblique: our primary source is archaeology, and what little textual evidence we do have derives from …

That Fine Little House, Rosalie Otero

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

I was intrigued by Sam Schuman’s allegory about liberal arts education using Virginia Lee Burton’s story of The Little House. Sam points out that it was not the little house that changed, but its neighborhood. I would argue that not only the neighborhood changed, but what went on inside the little house. Like most people, my first house was small, and the activities that went on within our house generally centered around a young family and a new career. As the years progressed, I moved to a larger house, and the activities changed from managing teenagers to grandchildren and …

The Communities That Make Standards Of Care Possible, Anita Bernstein Apr 2002

The Communities That Make Standards Of Care Possible, Anita Bernstein

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article argues that negligence law depends on "communities" in order to fulfill its agenda of promoting both security and freedom. Although many disciplines and discourses favor divergent understandings of the word "community," for purposes of the law the defining trait of community is group-based constraint. Communities can include various human aggregations. As far as the law understands this term, members need not have joined communities voluntarily, and the community need not have any leadership or power to change the lives of its members. Negligence law reaps benefits from the fact that certain groups exist. Their constraints make individuals less …

A Comparison Of Two-Market Bertrand Duopoly And Two-Market Cournot Duopoly, Vicki Knoblauch Apr 2002

A Comparison Of Two-Market Bertrand Duopoly And Two-Market Cournot Duopoly, Vicki Knoblauch

Economics Working Papers

In a two-market Bertrand duopoly, each of two firms chooses one of two markets and a price in that market. All four choices are made simultaneously. In a two-market Cournot duopoly, the firms choose quantities rather than prices. It is well known that in the one-market case the threat of price undercutting means that Bertrand equilibrium prices and profits will be lower and quantities higher than Cournot equilibrium prices, profits and quantities. We find a quite different consequence of price undercutting in two-market duopoly. In the two-market case the threat of price undercutting means that Bertrand equilibria are in continuous mixed strategies, while …

Mapping Environmental Injustices: Pitfalls And Potential Of Geographic Information Systems In Assessing Environmental Health And Equity., Juliana Maantay Apr 2002

Mapping Environmental Injustices: Pitfalls And Potential Of Geographic Information Systems In Assessing Environmental Health And Equity., Juliana Maantay

Publications and Research

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used increasingly to map instances of environmental injustice, the disproportionate exposure of certain populations to environmental hazards. Some of the technical and analytic difficulties of mapping environmental injustice are outlined in this article, along with suggestions for using GIS to better assess and predict environmental health and equity. I examine 13 GIS-based environmental equity studies conducted within the past decade and use a study of noxious land use locations in the Bronx, New York, to illustrate and evaluate the differences in two common methods of determining exposure extent and the characteristics of proximate populations. …

Out Of The Shadows: Traversing The Imaginary Of Sameness, Difference, And Relationalism - A Human Rights Proposal, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

This work seeks to develop a methodology that serves a women's anti-subordination project. To achieve this goal, Part II sets out the theoretical background of feminist theory (II.A) and three waves of feminism (II.B). Part II.C articulates the feminist revelations about law these analytical frameworks have engendered.

This project sets out to craft a methodology that can assist the goal of full personhood for women. Women's full personhood is a substantive concept that, as detailed in Part III, I ground on international human rights notions of fundamental rights - rights that we have, or ought to have, because we are …
