Distance Activism And The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Julie M. Raymond-Yakoubian Apr 2002

Distance Activism And The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Julie M. Raymond-Yakoubian

Political Science

The growing phenomenon of distance place attachment and distance activism can be seen in the extensive network of non-visitors involved in the protection of places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. This type of activism is not an anomaly, but rather an increasingly significant global phenomenon, which has gone largely unexamined by researchers of environmentalism, activism, wilderness, and place attachment. Distance activism encompasses the standard definition of activism, with the addition that distance activists must not have had physical contact with the natural environment for which they are being active. I argue that distance activists' actions and beliefs …

Recreation And Tourism In South-Central Alaska: Patterns And Prospects Prepared For The Us Forest Service Pacific Northwest Station, Martha Tomeo, Steve Colt, Stephanie Martin, Jenna Mieren

ISER Reports

Based on data from various sources, this report describes the extent and nature of recreation and tourism in south-central Alaska. Current activities, past trends, and prospective developments are presented. Particular attention is given to activities that occur on, or are directly affected by management of, the Chugach National Forest. Recreation and tourism in and around the forest are also placed in a larger context. The Chugach National Forest is heavily used as a scenic resource by motorists and waterborne passengers; road access to the forest supports recreation activities such as fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Although the annual rate …

Vertebral Pathologies In Skeletons Of Alaskan Eskimos From Golovin Bay And Nunivak Island, Scott Stephen Legge Apr 2002

Vertebral Pathologies In Skeletons Of Alaskan Eskimos From Golovin Bay And Nunivak Island, Scott Stephen Legge

Anthropology

The primary objectives of this dissertation are to analyze vertebral pathologies by comparing two Native Alaskan skeletal collections, and assessing these results in terms of the patterning of genetically controlled versus activity related lesions. Skeletal collections housed at the Smithsonian Institution were requested for repatriation by the residents of Golovin Bay and Nunivak Island in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Prior to reburial, the remains were analyzed utilizing the Smithsonian Protocol of Skeletal Analysis (Urcid and Byrd, 1995) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Vertebral anomalies and pathologies observed in this study include spondylolysis, spina bifida occulta, Schmorl's nodes, osteoarthritis, transitional …

Production And Transportation Considerations In The Export Of Peonies From Fairbanks, Alaska, Marie A. Klingman Apr 2002

Production And Transportation Considerations In The Export Of Peonies From Fairbanks, Alaska, Marie A. Klingman

Senior Theses

Peonies are grown and harvested as a marketable cut flower worldwide. They are commercially available throughout the seasons, except for July and August. However, this is a time when they bloom in Fairbanks, Alaska. This paper examines the potential of developing peonies as a cut flower industry in this region. Specific considerations of production and transportation and the feasibility of such a venture are addressed. Methods include interviews with persons involved in the industry as well as extensive Internet research. A cost analysis table was constructed to consider potential profitability. Developing peonies as a cut flower industry in Fairbanks, Alaska …
