Lombalgies Et Accidents Musculosquelettiques Chez Les Pompiers : Identification Et Analyse Des Situations À Risque Lors De L'Accès Aux Véhicules Et De La Manutention D'Outils, Denis Giguère, Denis Marchand

The Storrs Lectures: Liberals And Romantics At War: The Problem Of Collective Guilt, George P. Fletcher Jan 2002

The Storrs Lectures: Liberals And Romantics At War: The Problem Of Collective Guilt, George P. Fletcher

Faculty Scholarship

Somehow we in the West thought the age of war was behind us. After nuking Hiroshima, after napalming Vietnam, we had only distaste for the idea and the practice of war. The thought of dying for a noble cause, the pursuit of honor in the name of patria, brotherhood in arms – none of this appealed to us anymore. "I hate war and so does Eleanor," opined FDR in the oft-repeated lyrics of Pete Seeger. War became a subject for ironic disdain. As Tom Lehrer caught the mood of the 1960s: "We only want the world to know that …

Ghosts At The Table: Historiography And Nonfiction Narrative As Rhetorical Constructs Of The Mexican Counter-Revolution Of 1913, Sylvia Montgomery Shaw Jan 2002

Ghosts At The Table: Historiography And Nonfiction Narrative As Rhetorical Constructs Of The Mexican Counter-Revolution Of 1913, Sylvia Montgomery Shaw

Open Access Dissertations

One of the hallmarks of historical nonfiction is its purported allegiance to truth. But what is historical truth? Prevalent narratives and characterizations of events and individuals? What if research uncovers primary sources that contradict each other? How does one determine the "truth"? I explore these issues by writing my own carefully researched nonfiction novel about a Porfirian family, the Enrique Zepedas, and analyzing it in terms of three intersecting fields: historiography, nonfiction narrative, and rhetoric, to illustrate the centrality of language in conceptions of reality. This study is above all a rhetorical one. Zepeda was a prominent Mexican who conspired …

The Effect Of An Integrated Curriculum On Fourth Graders' Achievement In And Attitude Toward Music Instruction, Shirley E. Lacroix Jan 2002

The Effect Of An Integrated Curriculum On Fourth Graders' Achievement In And Attitude Toward Music Instruction, Shirley E. Lacroix

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an integrated curriculum on fourth graders' music achievement and attitudes toward general music instruction. Participants were two classes of fourth grade students (N = 41) randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. Taught by the same teacher, students in the experimental groups received integrated music and language arts instruction; students in the control groups received traditional music instruction. Prior to treatment, music background was assessed using the Music Background Questionnaire (Yoder-White, 1994) and Metropolitan Achievement Tests (1993) scores were gathered. In addition, data were collected across subjects' pretreatment …

Firstly, the air quality modelling interface has the capability of running the ISCST3 air quality model …

Chromosomal Variation In Nucella Lapillus (L.) And Other Muricid Gastropods, Philip Lionel Pascoe Jan 2002

Chromosomal Variation In Nucella Lapillus (L.) And Other Muricid Gastropods, Philip Lionel Pascoe

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The Robertsonian polymorphism (numerical change in the chromosome complement by centric fusion or fission) in the dog-whelk (Nucella lapillus, Mollusca: Gastropoda) has been known and studied sporadically for almost 50 years. However, the possible causes, consequences and proposed correlations of this phenomenon remain enigmatic. Nucella lapillus (2n = 26 to 36), has undergone a marked reduction in chromosome number from its ancestral form; most other muricid species have a diploid chromosome number in the range 2n = 60- 70. Correlations have been proposed between chromosome number (or karyotype) and habitat (wave exposure), and also directly or indirectly with allozymes, shell …

The Legal Structure Of American Freedom And The Provenance Of The Antitrust Immunities, Christopher L. Sagers Jan 2002

The Legal Structure Of American Freedom And The Provenance Of The Antitrust Immunities, Christopher L. Sagers

Utah Law Review

In sum, a variety of odd and dramatic consequences counsel that the constitutional explanation should be abandoned. There exists already an extensive body of law to deal with the problem of legal retaliation against political conduct-namely, Speech Clause jurisprudence-which is designed to accommodate the fact-rich, policy-laden, and inherently subjective contexts in which such matters inevitably arise. Indeed, the constitutional explanation really has nothing going for it but good intentions, and ranged against it are all sorts of problems. Therefore, I think the petitioning immunity should be recognized for what it is: an interpretation of a peculiar and uncommonly vague body …

Integrating The Literature And Social Studies Curriculum, Christa S. Lynch Jan 2002

Integrating The Literature And Social Studies Curriculum, Christa S. Lynch

Graduate Research Papers

This paper reviews the historical development of curriculum integration, examining the relationship between literature and social studies and offers an original instructional unit based on this research. The literature will illustrate how, throughout American history, Progressives argued for integration of subjects but under some opposition from their contemporaries. An examination of recent literature will then demonstrate how and why curriculum integration is currently used.

Contribution To The Relationship Between Solar Radiation And Sunshine Duration In The Tropics: A Case Study Of Experimental Data At Ilorin, Nigeria, Sunday O. Udo Jan 2002

Contribution To The Relationship Between Solar Radiation And Sunshine Duration In The Tropics: A Case Study Of Experimental Data At Ilorin, Nigeria, Sunday O. Udo

Turkish Journal of Physics

From monthly average daily values of clearness index and relative sunshine spanning a period of two years, two equations (linear and quadratic) of the Angstrom-Prescott model have been developed for the estimation of global solar irradiation at Ilorin (Lat. 8°32'N, Long. 4°34'E), a tropical location. Comparison of the regression coefficients of the linear type model showed that the values are quite consistent with those quoted in the literature for the Tropics. The predictive efficiencies of these two models are also compared with those which are believed to be applicable globally, and those developed for the Nigerian environment. Although some of …

Fifth Grade Website: Improving Leaming Through The Use Of The Web, Brent Thiessen

Graduate Research Papers

The Internet has improved the way that information can be presented to students in an educational setting. Teachers have taken advantage of improving education through the Internet by creating their own websites. However, some of these websites are not created in a way that allows them to be used effectively by students .. The author of this paper has created a website that will be used with his fifth grade students entitled The Fifth Grade Website (http://homepage.mac.com/brthiessen). The goal of the website is to enhance the educational experience of the students who use it. The website was designed in a …

Transformation Of Paradise: Geographical Perspectives On Tourism Development On A Small Carribbean Island (Utila, Honduras), Frances Heyward Currin Jan 2002

Transformation Of Paradise: Geographical Perspectives On Tourism Development On A Small Carribbean Island (Utila, Honduras), Frances Heyward Currin

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis addresses the recent development of tourism on Utila, the westernmost island of the Bay Islands of Caribbean, Honduras. Especially during the 1990s, international tourists, mostly Europeans and North Americans, were attracted to the island because it was a relatively inexpensive place to dive on a beautiful fringing reef and to enjoy other benefits of a tropical beach community. Larger nearby islands, Roatán and Guanaja, had developed something of a tourism industry earlier. A review of the economic and culture history of Utila reveals that modern islanders -- English-speaking Anglo- and Afro-Caribbeans originally from the Cayman Islands were preadapted …

The American And South Vietnamese Pacification Efforts During The Vietnam War, Matthew Douglas Pinard Jan 2002

The American And South Vietnamese Pacification Efforts During The Vietnam War, Matthew Douglas Pinard

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis closely examines the American and South Vietnamese pacification efforts in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. The perspectives of the United States military and civilian organizations that supported the war effort, the South Vietnamese government, and the Viet Cong insurgents are discussed in detail. This includes an analysis of military strategy, theory, and practice of the combatants in the Vietnam War in order to gain an understanding of the reasoning behind decision-making policies of military leaders on both sides of the war. A dissection of the Viet Cong insurgency, from the origins of insurgent political movements leading to …

The Effects Of Reading Poetry In Library Classes On Circulation Of The Library’S Poetry Collection, Mary Musselman Jan 2002

The Effects Of Reading Poetry In Library Classes On Circulation Of The Library’S Poetry Collection, Mary Musselman

Graduate Research Papers

Many of the elementary poetry books on the shelves of the Manson Northwest Webster Barnum Center library in Barnum, Iowa were not being checked out by students. By reading poetry from those books to third and fourth graders during library time the librarian hoped to stimulate interest in those poetry books and increase circulation of them. After keeping track of the poetry book circulation before and after reading poetry to the groups, the reading did in fact increase the circulation of the poetry books significantly at the .05 level.

Hypsometric Analysis Of Margaritifer Sinus And Origin Of Valley Networks, W. Luo Jan 2002

Hypsometric Analysis Of Margaritifer Sinus And Origin Of Valley Networks, W. Luo

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The formation of Martian valley networks has been debated since their discovery. The relative roles of groundwater sapping and fluvial runoff processes have different implications on Martian paleoclimate. This paper uses a hypsometric analysis technique that has been tested on terrestrial landforms to analyze the hypsometric attributes of watershed basins in the Margaritifer Sinus region on Mars using Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) gridded topographic data. On the basis of quantitative characteristics of their hypsometric attributes, the majority of the basins (covering ∼3/5 of the study area) look more like terrestrial basins of sapping origin, and a significant number of …

Differentiation In The Elementary Classroom : A Proposal For The 21st Century, Lindy K. Grafton Jan 2002

Differentiation In The Elementary Classroom : A Proposal For The 21st Century, Lindy K. Grafton

Honors Capstones

I recently spent three weeks in Glen Ellyn doing my clinical work in a second grade classroom. As I spent my time there, I also participated in the school's institute day. The main topic of discussion during the institute day was differentiated lesson planning and it's place in the classroom. In differentiated lessons, students who are at different levels or abilities are all given the same lessons, but at their level. In this way, the students do not feel as if they are doing a different assignment that requires less work than others in the class. The students will all …

Training And Support Of Developing-Country Population Scientists: A Panel Report, Jane Menken, Ann K. Blanc, Cynthia B. Lloyd Jan 2002

Training And Support Of Developing-Country Population Scientists: A Panel Report, Jane Menken, Ann K. Blanc, Cynthia B. Lloyd

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This report offers an assessment of the current situation and needs for the future with regard to training population professionals. As the concerns of population scientists become more diverse and as institutions look beyond the limitations of their own programs, collaborative training programs are increasingly seen as an effective means of maximizing the training experience of students while potentially lowering overall costs. While it is clear that the most desirable situation is one in which population experts are trained primarily in high-quality institutions located in their own countries or regions, it is equally clear that this scenario is not likely …

Demographic Factors In East Asian Regional Integration, Geoffrey Mcnicoll Jan 2002

Demographic Factors In East Asian Regional Integration, Geoffrey Mcnicoll

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Remapping Asia project, to which this paper is a contribution, investigates broad spatial changes in the ways that East Asia’s political and social life are organized and economies operate. Such changes are attributable to planned action of governments, firms, and other organized groups and to the unorganized but in some measure predictable behavior of myriad families and individuals. The project’s particular interest is in processes of regionalization-both through the deliberate construction of political institutions and through the largely unplanned emergence of regional affiliations and identities. Demographic factors play a potentially significant part both in promoting and in impeding regional …

Narrative, Meaning Making And Personal Development: Teachers' Storied Experience In Montessori, Steiner And Other Primary Classrooms, Gayle C. Ward Jan 2002

Narrative, Meaning Making And Personal Development: Teachers' Storied Experience In Montessori, Steiner And Other Primary Classrooms, Gayle C. Ward

Theses

This study explored how narrative was being used to foster meaning-making in Montessori, Steiner, Government and Catholic schools. In-depth interviews of twelve teachers from the four educational settings were used to collect the teachers' stories that comprised the data on narrative use. NUD*IST software was employed to organise data and to focus on emerging concepts through data analysis. A wide spectrum of narrative uses related to meaning making was revealed. These varied understandings support using narrative to foster insight on three levels relating to several theoretical views of narrative and its importance.
