The 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty With Japan And The Territorial Disputes In East Asia, Seokwoo Lee Jan 2002

The 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty With Japan And The Territorial Disputes In East Asia, Seokwoo Lee

Washington International Law Journal

There are currently three territorial disputes over islands in East Asia in which Japan is a disputant: against Russia, over the Kurile Islands; against China and Taiwan, over the Senkaku Islands; and against Korea, over the Liancourt Rocks. Although all the claimants marshal support for their cases from historical sources, it cannot be denied that much of the uncertainty surrounding the territorial demarcation is a by-product of immediate post-World War II boundary decisions and territorial dispositions. The final disposition of territories in East Asia at the end of World War II was effected by the San Francisco Peace Treaty of …

Optimal International Taxation And Tax Competition: Overcoming The Contradictions, William B. Barker Jan 2002

Optimal International Taxation And Tax Competition: Overcoming The Contradictions, William B. Barker

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This paper presents a theory of international taxation based on a new approach to source taxation that reflects world development and synthesizes the objectives of economic efficiency, fairness to taxpayers, and fairness to governments. Adoption of this model results in the preservation of comprehensive income taxation to capital-exporting nations and an expenditure tax base for capital-importing nations. The system would reduce much of the distortion caused by tax competition, eliminating the tax incentive for businesses to use productive assets and technologies outside the country of their development and saving the jobs of many workers.

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan Jan 2002

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan

Articles

This article examines the limitations of the concept of sustainable consumption in terms of the inadequate attention given to the social, cultural and historical contextualization of consumption. I argue that Macromarketing should adopt modes of inquiry that more fully engage with this contextualization. The implicit assumptions of ‘sustainable consumption’ center on the rational individual and his or her needs and wants, and neglect the significance of consumption practices as embodying the relations between individuals. Acts of consumption are not in opposition to, and prior to, macro structures and processes, they are macro processes at work. Consumer practices are cultural and …

Adams County History

When western York county became Adams county in the year 1800, the area already possessed something of a recorded history reaching back into the late 1730s. Principally in the form of documents relating to administrative, legal, and land-claim issues, these official papers provide us today with valuable evidence of the county's early settlers-who came, when they arrived, where they settled, and occasionally how they got along, or did not get along, with one another and with the colonial Penn government, and later with that of the new state erected during the Revolution. In its earliest period, these documents offer insight …

Integrated Resource Management Courses : Lessons Learned After Six Years, Hugh O. Canham Jan 2002

Integrated Resource Management Courses : Lessons Learned After Six Years, Hugh O. Canham

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Integrated management courses, or capstone courses, have been inserted into many forestry and natural resource college curricula. The general intent is to have the students bring together the knowledge they have gained in other courses and synthesize an holistic solution to some set of issues. At Syracuse such a course was made a required part of the senior year in the Forest Resources Management program starting in the fall of 1996. The author has taught the course almost every semester, sometimes in conjunction with others. Over the years various procedures were tried, different cases utilized, and different requirements placed on …

Looking Before We Leap: A Three-Part Study To Prepare For College Reorganization, Claudia L. Anderson, Mark W. Brunson

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

In Spring 2001 the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University voted on a plan for reorganization of departments and curricula that is intended to better reflect future natural resource science and management needs. To prepare for curriculum redesign we evaluated the career objectives and educational needs of undergraduate students in natural resources and related fields by means of a three-part study of relevant groups: current students, public agency professionals, and prospective students who chose nonnatural resources majors. Students typically seek traditional jobs with public agencies, but a large proportion also expect to attend graduate school. Comparison of seniors …

Print Media Distribution In A Digital Age, Frank Romano Jan 2002

Print Media Distribution In A Digital Age, Frank Romano

Books

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a distributor of print media, and its policies and practices will engender short- and long-term effects on commercial printers, and by extension, their customers (publishers and marketers). Increasing mail rates may force publishers to seek electronic and other alternatives that in turn might lower mail volumes sufficiently to adversely affect Postal Service operations, causing a cycle of rate increases coupled with volume decreases. Simultaneously, electronic bill presentment and payment competes for that class of mail that essentially supports the USPS. These occurrences could threaten the infrastructure that supports universal mail service and could …

Open Access Dissertations

This research exercise has assessed the threat of global change on select island nations of the wider Caribbean with a focus on the Lesser Antilles. That the Caribbean environment shall be impacted by climate change is certain, imposed in large part by marine affects. Changes in climate are the norm when one studies the history of the Earth. These changes include the glacial epochs and the contemporary climatic variation of the El Nino/Southern Oscillation. Accompanying global change will be variations in relative sea-level, modifications in storm climate, shifts in ocean circulation and altered precipitation patterns; science cannot determine today with …
