No. 25: Zimbabweans Who Move: Perspectives On International Migration In Zimbabwe, Daniel Tevara, Lovemore Zinyama

Southern African Migration Programme

The movement of people across political boundaries has generated considerable debate in Southern Africa. There is a compelling need for Southern African countries to harmonise regional migration policies and to ensure the freer movement of people across the region. However, it must be noted that disparities in levels of development are still evident in the economies of the region. There are fears in countries such as South Africa and Botswana that the freer movement of people will flood them with migrants from the less developed countries. There are also concerns in all the countries of SADC that freer movement will …

No. 09: Transnationalism And African Immigration To South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams

Southern African Migration Programme

The demise of formal apartheid has created new and as yet only partially understood opportunities for migration to South Africa. Legal migration from other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, for example, has increased almost ten-fold since 1990 to over four million visitors per year. South Africa’s (re)insertion into the global economy has brought new streams of legal and undocumented migrants from outside the SADC region and new ethnic constellations within. The easing of legal and unauthorized entry to South Africa has made the country a new destination for African asylum-seekers, long-distance traders, entrepreneurs, students and professionals (Bouillon 1996; Saasa …

Montana Wolf Conservation And Management Planning Document Jan 2002

Montana Wolf Conservation And Management Planning Document

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Executive Summary

The State of Montana recognizes the gray wolf as a native species and will integrate wolves as a valuable part of our wildlife heritage. Since 1973, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has managed wolves as an endangered species in Montana, under the authority of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Wolves are likely to be removed from the endangered species list within 3-5 years. Upon delisting, management authority for wolves will return to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP). MFWP recognizes and accepts the challenges, responsibilities, and benefits of a restored wolf population. Managing gray wolves will …

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, And Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants In U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance, Dana Kolpin, Edward Furlong, Michael Meyer, E. Michael Thurman, Steven Zaugg, Larry Barber, Herbert Buxton Jan 2002

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, And Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants In U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance, Dana Kolpin, Edward Furlong, Michael Meyer, E. Michael Thurman, Steven Zaugg, Larry Barber, Herbert Buxton

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

To provide the first nationwide reconnaissance of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs) in water resources, the U.S. Geological Survey used five newly developed analytical methods to measure concentrations of 95 OWCs in water samples from a network of 139 streams across 30 states during 1999 and 2000. The selection of sampling sites was biased toward streams susceptible to contamination (i.e. downstream of intense urbanization and livestock production). OWCs were prevalent during this study, being found in 80% of the streams sampled. The compounds detected represent a wide range of residential, industrial, and agricultural origins …

Holocene Multidecadal And Multicentennial Droughts Affecting Northern California And Nevada, Larry Benson, Michaele Kashgarian, Robert Rye, Steve Lund, Fred Paillet, Joseph Smoot, Cynthia Kester, Scott Mensing, Dave Meko, Susan Landström Jan 2002

Holocene Multidecadal And Multicentennial Droughts Affecting Northern California And Nevada, Larry Benson, Michaele Kashgarian, Robert Rye, Steve Lund, Fred Paillet, Joseph Smoot, Cynthia Kester, Scott Mensing, Dave Meko, Susan Landström

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Continuous, high-resolution δ18O records from cored sediments of Pyramid Lake, Nevada, indicate that oscillations in the hydrologic balance occurred, on average, about every 150 years (yr) during the past 7630 calendar years (cal yr). The records are not stationary; during the past 2740 yr, drought durations ranged from 20 to 100 yr and intervals between droughts ranged from 80 to 230 yr. Comparison of tree-ring-based reconstructions of climate change for the past 1200 yr from the Sierra Nevada and the El Malpais region of northwest New Mexico indicates that severe droughts associated with Anasazi withdrawal from Chaco Canyon …

A Test Of “Annual Resolution” In Stalagmites Using Tree Rings, Julio L. Betancourt, Henri D. Grissino-Mayer, Matthew W. Salzer, Thomas W. Swetnam Jan 2002

A Test Of “Annual Resolution” In Stalagmites Using Tree Rings, Julio L. Betancourt, Henri D. Grissino-Mayer, Matthew W. Salzer, Thomas W. Swetnam

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

So-called annual banding has been identified in a number of speleothems in which the number of bands approximates the time interval between successive U-series dates. The apparent annual resolution of speleothem records, however, remains largely untested. Here we statistically compare variations in band thickness from a late Holocene stalagmite in Carlsbad Cavern, Southern New Mexico, USA, with three independent tree-ring chronologies form the same region. We found no correspondence. Although there may be various explanations for the discordance, this limited exercise suggests that banded stalagmites should be held to the same rigorous standards in chronology building and climatic inference as annually …

Environmental Change In The Great Plains: An Isotopic Record From Fossil Horses, Benjamin H. Passey, Thure E. Cerling, Michael E. Perkins, Michael R. Voorhies, John M. Harris, Shane T. Tucker Jan 2002

Environmental Change In The Great Plains: An Isotopic Record From Fossil Horses, Benjamin H. Passey, Thure E. Cerling, Michael E. Perkins, Michael R. Voorhies, John M. Harris, Shane T. Tucker

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of fossil horse tooth enamel from Nebraska and Texas show evidence for late Neogene environmental changes in the Great Plains. The earliest unambiguous C4 dietary signal among Texas equids coincides with the age of the classic late Hemphillian–age Coffee Ranch fauna, which we suggest is ∼6.6 Ma based on volcanic ash correlations. C4 vegetation was present in the diets of a small fraction of late Hemphillian equids in Nebraska and was thereafter ordinary in the diets of both Nebraska and Texas equids. There is no unequivocal evidence for abundant C4 vegetation in …

Arktos: An Intelligent System For Satellite Sea Ice Image Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh Jan 2002

Arktos: An Intelligent System For Satellite Sea Ice Image Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present an intelligent system for satellite sea ice image analysis named ARKTOS (Advanced Reasoning using Knowledge for Typing Of Sea ice). The underlying methodology of ARKTOS is to perform fully automated analysis of sea ice images by mimicking the reasoning process of sea ice experts and photo-interpreters. Hence, our approach is feature-based, rule-based classification supported by multisource data fusion and knowledge bases. A feature can be an ice floe, for example. ARKTOS computes a host of descriptors for that feature and then applies expert rules to classify the floe into one of several ice classes. ARKTOS also incorporates information …

Smart Growth And Sustainable Transportation: Can We Get There From Here?, Oliver A. Pollard, Iii Jan 2002

Smart Growth And Sustainable Transportation: Can We Get There From Here?, Oliver A. Pollard, Iii

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article focuses on the development of smart growth, which includes sustainable transportation policies and more efficient uses of land. Smart growth was developed to combat some of the negative consequences of transportation and land use laws developed in the past fifty years which created dependence on motor vehicles. The article examines these policies and their inconsistency with smart growth, considers steps to be taken toward a more efficient transportation system and the difficulties in invoking these changes, and uses Atlanta as a case study in the opportunities and challenges for smart growth and sustainable transportation policies.

Scale And Unit Specification Influences In Harvest Scheduling With Maximum Area Restrictions, Alan T. Murray, Andrés Weintraub Jan 2002

Scale And Unit Specification Influences In Harvest Scheduling With Maximum Area Restrictions, Alan T. Murray, Andrés Weintraub

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This article examines alternative approaches for representing a forest region to be scheduled for harvesting, where the primary concerns are maximizing return and imposing a maximum contiguous area of disturbance restriction. One approach assumes that any two adjacent management units exceed a regulated maximum area of disturbance. An alternative approach recognizes that management units may be substantially smaller than the maximum area restriction, so simultaneously disturbing two neighboring units does not necessarily represent a maximum area violation. The distinguishing feature of these two approaches is the way in which a forest is spatially represented. A single time period, 351 management …

Biodiversity Of Fungi In Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mounds, Jennifer A. Zettler, Thomas M. Mcinnis Jr., Craig R. Allen, Timothy P. Spira Jan 2002

Biodiversity Of Fungi In Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mounds, Jennifer A. Zettler, Thomas M. Mcinnis Jr., Craig R. Allen, Timothy P. Spira

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, became established in North America more than 70 yr ago, and it currently occupies most of the southeastern United States. Fire ants change the physical and chemical components of soil, which likely infuence soil fungi in ant mounds. To determine the effects of fire ants on soil fungi, we sampled soil from fire ant mounds and the surrounding nonmound soil. In addition, we sampled soil from the nests of the native ant Aphaenogaster texana carolinensis Wheeler. We found that both fire ant mounds and native ant nests had greater fungal abundance but …

Bioregionalism And The History Of Place, William L. Lang Jan 2002

Bioregionalism And The History Of Place, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduces a forum on bioregionalism and historiography, a concept that goes beyond the sense of place to include region in a natural rather than a political sense. Examples include watersheds, landscapes, and expectations from nature. The concept, which surfaced in the 1970's, is a dynamic one that links physical nature and how humans understand it.

A Two-Fraction Model For The Transport Of Sand/Gravel Mixtures, Peter Wilcock, S. T. Kenworthy Jan 2002

A Two-Fraction Model For The Transport Of Sand/Gravel Mixtures, Peter Wilcock, S. T. Kenworthy

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

A mixed-size sediment transport model using only two fractions, sand and gravel, offers practical advantages in terms of the required input and conceptual advantages by readily incorporating the nonlinear effects of sand content on transport rate. A two-fraction model is developed from flume and field transport observations. Sand and gravel transport rates are collapsed to a single transport function using a scaling parameter representing incipient motion for each fraction. The incipient motion function is consistent with established values in the limit of pure sand and gravel beds and shows a sharp change with increasing sand content over the transition from …

Bs 400 Bible Survey, Mark J. Hatcher Jan 2002

Bs 400 Bible Survey, Mark J. Hatcher

Syllabi

We will be working through the Bible together, becoming acquainted with its narratives, instructions, prophecies and poetic expressions of the heart. Our specific concern is to build a working knowledge of the people, places, events, instructions, etc. of the Bible. As we pursue this concern let's keep in mind that the data points beyond itself. It points to relationships between God, people, and the world through which God reveals important truth about who we are, who God is, and life itself. We want to learn the data in such a way that it reminds us of the narratives, instructions, prophecies, …

Coelum Britannicum: Inigo Jones And Symbolic Geometry, Rumiko Handa Jan 2002

Coelum Britannicum: Inigo Jones And Symbolic Geometry, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Inigo Jones's interpretation that Stonehenge was a Roman temple of Coelum, the god of the heavens, was published in 1655, three years after his death, in The most notable Antiquity of Great Britain, vulgarly called Stone-Heng, on Salisbury Plain, Restored. King James I demanded an interpretation in 1620. The task most reasonably fell in the realm of Surveyor of the King's Works, which Jones had been for the preceding five years. According to John Webb, Jones's assistant since 1628 and executor of Jones's will, it was Webb who wrote the book based on Jones's "few indigested" notes, on the recommendation …

Sustaining Geographies Of Hope: Cultural Resources On Public Lands, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

This Article integrates constitutional principles, statutory requirements, and federal policy governing the use and preservation of cultural resources to sketch out a decision-making framework for public land managers. Specific examples of cases where American Indian interests have been pitted against competing demands at Devils Tower National Monument, the Indian Pass area of the California Desert, and the Medicine Wheel are examined to illustrate optimal solutionssolutions allowing the greatest possible accommodation of cultural, even spiritual, interests, while protecting the resources from degradation. The conflicts at these sites, and the opportunities presented by these conflicts, show that federal agencies can adopt reasonable …
