Seasonal Biogeochemistry And Mineral Cycling Of The Middle Rio Grande Alluvial Aquifer, New Mexico, David Stewart Vinson Dec 2002

Seasonal Biogeochemistry And Mineral Cycling Of The Middle Rio Grande Alluvial Aquifer, New Mexico, David Stewart Vinson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Rio Grande in central New Mexico flows through a semi-arid, historically aggrading Quaternary rift basin. Flow regulation measures include dams, irrigation diversions, levees, and bank stabilization. These have caused severe impairment including incision, lowered water tables, and less overbank flooding; disrupted groundwater - surface water interactions; altered seasonal organic carbon dynamics; and declining native biota. Previously dynamic flowpaths in the shallow alluvial aquifer (hyporheic corridor) have become are less reversible due to parallel drain ditches with lower beds than the river. These ditches impose relatively static hydraulic gradients on the alluvial aquifer that force water to flow from the …

The Representation Of The Darker Faustian Elements Of The Walpurgisnacht And Mephistopheles In Heavy Metal And Rock Music, Edgar Dan Hornback Dec 2002

The Representation Of The Darker Faustian Elements Of The Walpurgisnacht And Mephistopheles In Heavy Metal And Rock Music, Edgar Dan Hornback

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

There has been an association between the Faust drama and music which has endured for centuries. It is a tradition which is also influential during the present in rock music. The main characteristic of rock music and heavy metal is to reflect life in a realistic and an unapologetic manner in its lyrical content. Therefore, the combining of the drama with rock music is a natural and logical progression. The Walpurgisnacht and the character of Mephistopheles from the drama have been the vehicles to reflect the difficulties of modern life. The entire drama has also been adapted and set in …

A Feminist Inquiry Into The Nature Of Creativity: A Case Study Of Alice Bartlett Woolf, Susan Lucinda Woolf Schulte Dec 2002

A Feminist Inquiry Into The Nature Of Creativity: A Case Study Of Alice Bartlett Woolf, Susan Lucinda Woolf Schulte

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

I did a case study of my mother because she was the most creative person I had ever known. However as I began my doctoral studies in creativity, I felt a lack, a gap, a large deficiency in the theories about, and descriptions of creative people. Wallace and Gruber, Howard Gardner, Feldman and Csikszentmihalyi studied creative people. Even though some of these people were very famous, I still thought I was not seeing a match for my mother's type of creativity. It was only when I began to read Feminist writers such as Judy Chicago, Carolyn Heilbrun and Catherine Bateson …

Athletic Participation: A Test Of Learning And Neutralization Theories., Mario Bernard Hankerson Dec 2002

Athletic Participation: A Test Of Learning And Neutralization Theories., Mario Bernard Hankerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Athletics has been regarded as a means of encouraging youth to build character, discipline, and develop healthy habits. However, literature has emerged that asserts athletics do not prevent deviant behaviors, but instead, influence one to commit deviant acts. As such, this research examined effects of athletics on the commission of deviant behaviors via learning and techniques of neutralization theories.

Subjects for this project included 325 college students from a southern regional university. Data were generated through the use of a self-report questionnaire, which measured variables pertaining to self-reported deviant behaviors including perceptions of peer deviance, neutralizing indicators, and sports participation. …

Folk Medicine In Southern Appalachian Fiction., Catherine Benson Strain Dec 2002

Folk Medicine In Southern Appalachian Fiction., Catherine Benson Strain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The region of Southern Appalachia, long known for its colorful storytellers, is also rich in folk medical lore and practice. In their Appalachian novels, Lucy Furman, Emma Bell Miles, Mildred Haun, Catherine Marshall, Harriette Arnow, Lee Smith, and Charles Frazier, feature folk medicine prominently in their narratives. The novels studied, set against the backdrop of the rise of official medicine, are divided into three major time periods that correspond to important chapters in the history of American medicine: the 1890s through the 1930s; the 1940s through the 1960s; and the 1970s through the present. The study of folk medicine, a …

Perceived Barriers To The National Board For Professional Teaching Standards Certification., Jan Woodard Moore Dec 2002

Perceived Barriers To The National Board For Professional Teaching Standards Certification., Jan Woodard Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since its conception in 1987, much money and effort have been expended establishing the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Although 16,038 educators in 45 states and the District of Columbia have obtained National Board Certification, there are over 1,200 teachers in the East Tennessee counties of Cocke and Sevier who are eligible for National Board Certification, but have not obtained this certification. This study sought to identify the barriers that discouraged this population from attempting to gain National Board Certification.

The research design was inferential and utilized data from a survey instrument constructed by the researcher. A pilot test …

"There's No Business Like Ufo Business": How The Cold War, Popular Culture, And Roswell, New Mexico Combined In The Development Of Ufo-Related Tourism, Courtney A. Collie Dec 2002

"There's No Business Like Ufo Business": How The Cold War, Popular Culture, And Roswell, New Mexico Combined In The Development Of Ufo-Related Tourism, Courtney A. Collie

History ETDs

In July 1947, something crashed in the desert north of Roswell, New Mexico. While initial reports indicated that the downed object was a flying saucer, the United States Army Air Forces explained that it was a weather balloon. The object recovered was a weather balloon, but it had been employed in a top secret Cold War project, and the military felt it necessary to conceal the balloon's true purpose. Some observers, however, charged that the military was covering up a flying saucer crash instead, and the myth of the Roswell Incident was born.

This thesis examines the construction and perpetuation …

The Relationship Of Home Environment And Kindergarten Readiness., Nancye C. Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between home environment and school readiness of children entering kindergarten in a rural East Tennessee county. Family and home environment variables included family income, family structure, parents' education, participation in literacy activities, availability of home learning tools, and amount of children's television viewing. A self-reported parent survey was used to gather information about the family environment; the Brigance K Screen was used to determine entering kindergartner's readiness for school. Three hundred and thirty eight children and parents participated.

An initial analysis of data incorporated simple descriptive statistics in the form …
