Nest Building Behavior Of The Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno: Trogonidae), September 2002, Emily S. Thaden Sep 2002

Nest Building Behavior Of The Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno: Trogonidae), September 2002, Emily S. Thaden

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Resplendent Quetzals (Pharomachrus mocinno: Trogonidae) form monogamous pairs during the breeding season (Johnsgard 2000). Both the male and female invest in nest building and the parental duties of egg incubation and chick rearing (Skutch 1944). I looked at the nest building behavior of two pairs of quetzals in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. This study quantitatively examined differences between the amount of time each sex spent excavating the nest as well as qualitatively described the behavior of the pair as they worked. The female of one of the pairs spent a significantly longer time working in the nest than the male …

The Influence Of Remnant Tree Dispersal Syndromes On The Succession Of A Secondary Forest, September 2002, Scott A. Pattison Sep 2002

The Influence Of Remnant Tree Dispersal Syndromes On The Succession Of A Secondary Forest, September 2002, Scott A. Pattison

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

A large portion of Neotropical forests are being or have been cleared for agriculture and pasture. Conserving biodiversity in these areas, therefore, will depend on efforts to restore degraded habitat. In order to examine the influence of remnant trees on regeneration in a secondary tropical forest in Costa Rica, this study compared the species composition of plants and seedlings beneath a bird dispersed tree species, Zanthoxylum fagara (Rutaceae), and a ballistically dispersed tree species, Croton draco (Euphorbiaceae), There was no statistical difference found between the two, but when both data were combined, a higher percentage of bird and bat dispersed …

Hummingbird-Mediated Pollen Flow Across A Cloud Forest Edge, September 2002, Kate Freund Sep 2002

Hummingbird-Mediated Pollen Flow Across A Cloud Forest Edge, September 2002, Kate Freund

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Non-territorial hummingbirds that visit more than one species of flower in mixed order can deposit pollen on heterospecific stigmas as they forage. Pollen dispersed to incorrect species lowers the reproductive success of both the pollen donor and recipient plants. While highly specific relationships between some plants and their hummingbird pollinators probably evolved to reduce this type of heterospecific pollen flow, these relationships may break down in severely disturbed areas. This may lead to high rates of pollen deposition at inappropriate flowers. This study looked at hummingbird-mediated pollen flow across a primary cloud forest-pasture ecotone in Monteverde, Costa Rica. While virtually …

Decomposing A Partner : Intra-Organisational Dynamics In Inter-Organisational Relationships, Abhoy K Ojha Sep 2002

Decomposing A Partner : Intra-Organisational Dynamics In Inter-Organisational Relationships, Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

The traditional literature on alliances has treated organisations as homogenous entities, neglecting the influence of intra-organisational dynamics on inter-organisational relationships. This article, based on a longitudinal analysis of the global software outsourcing partnerships between a North America based telecommunications multinational, Global Telecommunications, and four Indian software firms, examines the role of these dynamics within the multinational in the four relationships. Decisions to enter into outsourcing relationships, particularly with global partners, have severe ramifications for nodal organisations. Contrary to the literature on the subject, data from this research suggested that Global’s decision to establish outsourcing relationships was not a corporate decision, …

War And The Constitutional Text, John C. Yoo Sep 2002

War And The Constitutional Text, John C. Yoo

University of Chicago Law Review

This Response to Professor Ramsey's pro-Congress view of the war powers debate presents a complete textual and structural theory of a flexible approach to war powers. Under this flexible system, the President possesses the power to initiate and conduct hostilities as commander-in-chief and chief executive under Article II of the Constitution, checked by Congress's power of the purse. The Declare War Clause simply confers on Congress juridical power to both define the United States's legal relations with other countries and trigger domestic constitutional authorities during wartime. How the nation goes to war will result from the interaction of the political …

In Conversation With Itamar Even-Zohar About Literary And Culture Theory, Dora Sales Salvador Sep 2002

In Conversation With Itamar Even-Zohar About Literary And Culture Theory, Dora Sales Salvador

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Dora Sales Salvador presents, in "In Conversation with Itamar Even-Zohar about Literary and Culture Theory," the text of an interview with literary and culture theoretician Itamar Even-Zohar (Tel Aviv University). In the interview, Sales Salvador discusses with Even-Zohar his polysystem theory, a framework that emerges from the wish to foster open dialogue between different trends in culture research. The discussion suggests that there are assumptions shared by practitioners of cultural studies and Even-Zohar's culture research framework he has been developing since 1993. At the same time, the discussion reveals that it is also necessary and perhaps much more important to …

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein Sep 2002

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Much of the time, human beings do what others do. This is perfectly sensible, because the actions and statements of other people convey valuable information about what should be done. In addition, most people want the good opinion of others, and this desire promotes conformity. But conformity can lead both groups and institutions in unfortunate and even catastrophic directions. The most serious problem is that by following others, people fail to disclose what they know and believe, thus depriving society of important information. Those who dissent, and who reject the pressures imposed by others, perform valuable social functions, often at …

High-Resolution Magnetostratigraphy Of Speleothems From Snežna Jama, Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Slovenia, Pavel Bosák, Helena Hercman, Andrej Mihevc

KIP Articles

The Snežna jama Cave is located in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, NE Slovenia, in a Raduha Ridge. The cave is a huge, more or less horizontal fossil phreatic/epiphreatic conduit. It is penetrated by vertical shafts - invasion vadose (proglacial) caves. Close to the cave entrance, there is about 3 m high wall composed of speleothems - a complex sequence of flowstone with numerous breaks in deposition, six of them are principal. The lower part of the profile (about 85 cm) contains abundant terrigenous component (terra rossa-derived clay). Stalag- mites developed in several periods are completely buried by nearly horizontal younger sequences …
