The Répertoire De Vedettes-Matière De L’Université Laval Library 1946-1992: Francophone Subject Access In North America And Europe, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In 1946, the Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, started using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in French. To do so, the librarians created an authority list in French, Répertoire de Vedettes-matière (RVM), whose first published edition appeared in 1962 (the first edition appeared with the title Répertoire des Vedettes-matière). Since then, RVM has had increasing importance in providing support for subject access in francophone countries around the world as other libraries, first in Canada and then in Europe, either adopted RVM, often with some modification, for subject access or used it as a resource for creating French …

Structural Analysis Of Audit Evidence Using Belief Functions, Hai Lu, Hai Lu Oct 2002

Structural Analysis Of Audit Evidence Using Belief Functions, Hai Lu, Hai Lu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This article performs two types of analysis using Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions for evidential reasoning. The first analysis deals with the impact of the structure of audit evidence on the overall belief at each variable in the network, variables being the account balance to be audited, the related transaction streams, and the associated audit objectives. The second analysis deals with the impact of the relationship (logical "and" and "algebraic relationship") among various variables in the network on the overall belief. For our first analysis, we change the evidential structure from a network to a tree and determine its impact.

Draft Of The Integrated Studies Of Educational Technology: A Formative Evaluation Of The E-Rate Program, Michael J. Puma, Duncan D. Chaplin, Kristen M. Olson, Amy C. Pandjiris Oct 2002

Draft Of The Integrated Studies Of Educational Technology: A Formative Evaluation Of The E-Rate Program, Michael J. Puma, Duncan D. Chaplin, Kristen M. Olson, Amy C. Pandjiris

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Although the United States is a leader of the technological revolution, there are segments of American society—particularly the poor, minorities, and the geographically isolated—for whom access to computers and the Internet is significantly lower. The E-Rate, created by Congress as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-104), is a federal program that seeks to bridge this “digital divide” by supporting broader public access to the new digital technology at public and private nonprofit educational institutions. The availability of such public access points has been found to reduce economic and racial disparities, and some research suggests that when …

Defining And Customizing Tagmemic Interaction For Historic House Museum Websites: A Study Of Effective Learning Design For Museum Educators, Julie Jenkins Strohkorb Oct 2002

Defining And Customizing Tagmemic Interaction For Historic House Museum Websites: A Study Of Effective Learning Design For Museum Educators, Julie Jenkins Strohkorb

English Theses & Dissertations

Educational multimedia tools that are marketed most successfully usually are described as "interactive" learning resources. The word interactive broadly suggests a host of positive learning experiences - student-driven inquiry, audio-visual support of ideas, and critical thinking or decision-making opportunities. However, the term interactive often is used loosely, and begs for a more concrete definition. This study defines multimedia interactivity as a give-and-take relationship between a technology tool and its human user. Technology itself is not interactive, but technology can be designed and developed to enhance an interactive experience. This study looks at the problem of defining such a nebulous term, …

Australasian Law And Canadian Statutes In The Nineteenth Century: A Study Of The Movement Of Colonial Legislation Between Jurisdictions, Jeremy Finn Oct 2002

Australasian Law And Canadian Statutes In The Nineteenth Century: A Study Of The Movement Of Colonial Legislation Between Jurisdictions, Jeremy Finn

Dalhousie Law Journal

This paper considers the use between 1850 and 1900 by Anglo-Canadian legislatures of legislative precedents from the Australian and New Zealand colonies and argues that while a wide range of Australasian laws were considered by Canadian legislators, the most significant Australasian influences are to be found in mining law, electoral and constitutional law and land law The paper goes on to explore, by use of archival, parliamentary and published materials, the processes by which Canadian legislators acquired their knowledge of these Australasian initiatives. While governmental and institutional channels (including the Colonial Office) played a significant part in the transmission of …

After The Revolution: Being Pragmatic And Functional In Canada's Trial Courts And Courts Of Appeal, William Lahey, Diana Ginn Oct 2002

After The Revolution: Being Pragmatic And Functional In Canada's Trial Courts And Courts Of Appeal, William Lahey, Diana Ginn

Dalhousie Law Journal

In a 1998 decision, Pushpanathan v Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada synthesized and revised the previous jurisprudence on "pragmatic and functional analysis" - the approach used since the late 1980's to determine the appropriate standard of deference in substantive review of administrative decision making. The next year, in Baker v. Canada, the Court expanded the reach of the pragmatic and functional analysis by applying it to the exercise of administrative discretion. This paper examines approximately 275 lower court decisions to determine how courts across Canada are responding to and implementing the doctrinal change initiated by the Supreme Court. Patterns …

Differences In Perception And Number Of Incidents Of Sexual Harassment Among College Students In The United States And The Federal Republic Of Germany, Antonia Von Tobiesen

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine the difference between American and German students in perception and frequency of sexual harassment. The participants were female Old Dominion University psychology undergraduates and psychology students from the Universitaet Freiburg. A survey containing the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire {SEQ), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and modified questions from Gutek's (1985) Main Questionnaire (Women's Version) was used. The survey was designed to reveal sexual harassment experiences in the work environment or in the university setting, while measuring the effect of the experiences on self-esteem and the students' reactions to the incidents. The results indicated that …

The Use Of Free Indirect Discourse In Burney, Austen, And Eliot, Elizabeth H. Harlan Oct 2002

The Use Of Free Indirect Discourse In Burney, Austen, And Eliot, Elizabeth H. Harlan

English Theses & Dissertations

Free indirect discourse, a narrative technique used in third-person novels, occurs when the private thoughts of a character are voiced in a narrative passage and no indicator such as "she thought" is present. This technique, also known as represented thought or style indirect libre, is a blurring of the line between the character and the narrator. Although popularized in the works of Jane Austen, free indirect discourse can be traced back even further to Fanny Burney and it first appears as third person narratives are beginning to replace epistolary and journal-like novels. Some have attributed the development to a growing …

Consumer Health Information For Asians (Chia): A Collaborative Project, Deborah D. Halsted, Beatriz Varman, Marsha Sullivan, Lynne Nguyen

Library Staff Publications

According to the 2000 United States Census, the Asian population in Houston, Texas, has increased more than 67% in the last ten years. To supplement an already active consumer health information program, the staff of the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library worked with community partners to bring health information to predominantly Asian neighborhoods. Brochures on health topics of concern to the Asian community were translated and placed in eight informational kiosks in Asian centers such as temples and an Asian grocery store. A press conference and a ribbon cutting ceremony were held to debut the kiosks and to …

This comment explores the prior and existing influence of the Catholic Church over the interpretation of the Irish Constitution. Section II examines the Irish Constitution's religious provisions and looks at methods of judicial constitutional interpretation. Section III delves into the major secular trends that have effected constitutional changes in Ireland over the last few decades, focusing on the decriminalization of homosexuality, the lift of the ban on divorce, and the relaxation of Ireland's abortion prohibition. The comment concludes in Section IV with an overview of the Irish Constitution's blasphemy provision, including its roots in English law, and analyzes the possibility …

A Russian Legal Revolution: The 2002 Criminal Procedure Code - Part One, Leonard Orland Oct 2002

A Russian Legal Revolution: The 2002 Criminal Procedure Code - Part One, Leonard Orland

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Russia has a new criminal procedure code [hereinafter the "Code"] that became effective on July 1, 2002. The Code undertakes, in a single enactment, to change a criminal justice system widely condemned by Russians, as well as other nations, as oppressive to one that subjects the criminal justice system - police, prosecutors, judges - to the rule of law. The Code, which "will transform the Russian criminal justice system,"' presents a rich and detailed blueprint for a due process model of criminal adjudication.2 The Code is the result of a sustained reform effort by a Commission headed by Dimitrii Kozak. …

Phonon Dispersion Measurements Of Yba2cu3o6.15 And Yba2cu3o6.95 By Time-Of-Flight Neutron Spectroscopy, J-H Chung, T. Egami, R. J. Mcqueeney, M. Yethiraj, M. Arai, T. Yokoo, Herbert A. Mook, Y. Endoh, S. Tajima, C. Frost, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We measured the phonon dispersions of YBa2Cu3O6.15 and YBa2Cu3O6.95 by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The in-plane bond-stretching modes in the metallic phase showed a distinct a-b plane an isotropy beyond what is expected for structural origin. Such an isotropy in the longitudinal optical modes, which is absent in the TO, suggests strong in-plane anisotropy in the underlying electronic structure. Apical oxygen bond-stretching modes showed a large frequency change between the insulating and the metallic phases. This large softening also is beyond structural origin, and suggests the effect of local electronic …

Market Segmentation And Information Values Of Earnings Announcements: Some Empirical Evidence From An Event Study On The Chinese Stock Market, Yu Gao, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper investigates the trading activities of two distinct classes of shareholders, namely, the Chinese domestic investors and the foreign investors in the segmented Chinese A-share and B-share markets, respectively. We conduct an event study on the annual earnings announcements based on two different accounting standards: IAS and PRC GAAP. The earnings announcements based on IAS and PRC GAAP are value relevant. The investors in the B-share market react to both the IAS and PRC GAAP earnings announcements, while the investors in the A-share market pay more attention to the PRC GAAP earnings reports. In the B-share market, positive abnormal …

On The Performance Of Geometric Chart With Estimated Control Limits, Zhenlin Yang, Min Xie, Vellaisamy Kuralmani, Kwok-Leung Tsui Oct 2002

On The Performance Of Geometric Chart With Estimated Control Limits, Zhenlin Yang, Min Xie, Vellaisamy Kuralmani, Kwok-Leung Tsui

Research Collection School Of Economics

The control chart based on the geometric distribution (geometric chart) has been shown to be competitive with p- or np-charts for monitoring the proportion nonconforming, especially for applications in high quality manufacturing environments. However, implementing a geometric chart is often based on the assumption that the in-control proportion nonconforming is known or accurately estimated for a high quality process, an accurate parameter estimate may require a very large sample size that is seldom available. In this paper we investigate the sample size effect when the proportion nonconforming is estimated. An analytical approximation is derived to compute shift detection probabilities and …

Amending Authors And Constitutional Discourse, Barbara Darby Oct 2002

Amending Authors And Constitutional Discourse, Barbara Darby

Dalhousie Law Journal

The author surveys various theories related to the concept of constitutional amendment, reviewing the importance of the notion of authorship to the amending process, and the related theories about constitutional legitimacy and judicial activism. In seeking an alternative conceptualization of authorship that is applicable to constitutional amendment, she reviews Michel Foucault's essay on authorship, and specifically his notion of the transdiscursive author who originates a "return" to an original text, which she presents as a useful context in which to read the constitutional amendment process. Constitutional discourse, using Foucault's approach to discourse, occupies a significant cultural and social position. She …

A Comparison Of Big-Five Personality Factors Safe Sex Behaviors And Social Desirability Using Paper-And-Pencil And Interactive-Voice-Response Surveys, J. Eric Tedford Oct 2002

A Comparison Of Big-Five Personality Factors Safe Sex Behaviors And Social Desirability Using Paper-And-Pencil And Interactive-Voice-Response Surveys, J. Eric Tedford

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Paper-and-pencil tests (PP) have been the cornerstone of surveys and questionnaires in psychology for well over a century. Researchers have longed for a survey method that would provide similar results and quicker data analysis. There are several methods that have been commonly tested against PP surveys; including computers and computer-assisted telephone interviewing, in which a researcher phones the participant who answers questions by pressing the numbers on the keypad of his phone. Both of these methods have yielded conflicting results that showed them to give either equivalent, more social desirable, or less social desirable answers. There has been relatively little …

Retracing The Novel: Amatory Fiction And The Novel's Rise, Sarah Elizabeth Alderfer Oct 2002

Retracing The Novel: Amatory Fiction And The Novel's Rise, Sarah Elizabeth Alderfer

English Theses & Dissertations

Arguing against. Ian Watt's The Rise of the Novel and other academically accepted accounts of the history of the novel, this thesis positions amatory fiction at the forefront of novel's traditional genealogy by comparing amatory fiction with the Gothic novel in order to link the two genres outside of realistic fiction such as Pamela. Using Love in Excess by Eliza Haywood and The Monk by Matthew Lewis as representative examples of amatory fiction and Gothicism, respectively, this thesis ultimately establishes a connection between the three genres. It examines the similarities in amatory fiction and Gothicism through their use of …
