Development Of An Alternate Curriculum For Bachelor Degree Completion Students In The Lead Program At Ohio Dominican College, William A. Vensel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In the Learning Enhanced Adult Degree (LEAD) program at Ohio Dominican College (ODC), a cohort based accelerated delivery format, students who complete the Associate of Science (AS.) degree had only one bachelor's degree program to choose from, the B.S. in Business Administration. Because Ohio Dominican is a bachelor degree granting institution, classified as Baccalaureate General by the Carnegie Commission, it is desirable to see all enrolled students through to the bachelor degree. The problem addressed by this practicum was that with only one degree program to choose from at the bachelor level, retention of AS. students who desired the accelerated …

Subsidence Hazards In Different Types Of Karst: Evolutionary And Speleogenetic Approach, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 2002

Subsidence Hazards In Different Types Of Karst: Evolutionary And Speleogenetic Approach, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

The typology of karst, based on distinguishing the successive stages of general hydrogeological evolution, between which major boundary conditions and the overall circulation pattern change considerably, gives a natural clue, properly to classify and tie together karst breakdown settings, speleogenetic styles and breakdown development mechanisms. Subsidence hazards vary substantially between the different karst types so that classifying individual karst according to typology can provide an integrated general assessment. This provides a useful basis for selection and realization of region- and site-specific assessment schemes and management strategies. Intrastratal karst types, subjacent karst in particular, are most potent in generating subsidence problems. …

Karst Breakdown Mechanisms From Observations In The Gypsum Caves Of The Western Ukraine: Implications For Subsidence Hazard Assessment, Alexander Klimchouk, Vjacheslav Andrejchuk Jan 2002

Karst Breakdown Mechanisms From Observations In The Gypsum Caves Of The Western Ukraine: Implications For Subsidence Hazard Assessment, Alexander Klimchouk, Vjacheslav Andrejchuk

International Journal of Speleology

The term karst breakdown is employed in this paper to denote the totality of processes and phenomena of gravitational and/or hydrodynamic destruction of the ceiling of a karst cavity and of the overlying sediments. It refers not only to the existence of a surface subsidence (collapse) feature but, first of all, to the “internal” (hidden in the subsurface) structures that precede development of a surface form. This study reports and discusses the results of direct mapping and examination of breakdown structures in the gypsum karst of the Western Ukraine, at the level of their origin, i.e. in caves. The accessibility …

Mechanisms Of Karst Breakdown Formation In The Gypsum Karst Of The Fore-Ural Region, Russia (From Observations In The Kungurskaja Cave), Vjacheslav Andrejchuk, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 2002

Mechanisms Of Karst Breakdown Formation In The Gypsum Karst Of The Fore-Ural Region, Russia (From Observations In The Kungurskaja Cave), Vjacheslav Andrejchuk, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

The fore-Ural is a classical region of intrastratal gypsum karst. The intensive development of karst in the Permian gypsums and anhydrites causes numerous practical problems, the subsidence hazard being the most severe. Mechanisms of karst breakdown formation were studied in detail in the Kunguskaya Cave area. The cave and its setting are characteristic to the region and, being a site of detalied stationary studies for many years, the cave represents a convenient location for various karst and speleological investigations. Breakdown structures related to cavities of the Kungurskaya Cave type develop by two mechanisms: gravitational (sagging and fall-in of the ceilings …

Karst Subsidence In South-Central Apulia, Southern Italy, Marco Delle Rose, Mario Parise Jan 2002

Karst Subsidence In South-Central Apulia, Southern Italy, Marco Delle Rose, Mario Parise

International Journal of Speleology

Subsidence in the karst of Apulia (Southern Italy), one of the classical karst areas of Italy, is described in this paper. The carbonate rocks that make up the geological structure of the Apulia region are affected by subsidence, which is of different type and intensity depending upon geological, topographical, and hydrogeological conditions. In particular, we discriminate between inland subsidence and coastal subsidence. Inland subsidence is generally restricted to the presence of individual cavities, either empty or partly or totally filled with deposits produced by dissolution of soluble rocks underground. Locally, such subsidence can cause severe effects on anthropogenic structures above. …

Effect Of Applied Academics On The Final English Course Grade Of Associate Of Science Degree Students In Automotive Service Management Technology, Kathleen Habel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Traditionally, students enrolled in two-year Automotive Service Management Technology degree programs, had a difficult time succeeding in required general education courses, especially math, English composition, and physics. They enrolled in classes open to the general student population but found that the material had little meaning or relevance to their chosen field of study. According to college records, the pass rate was less than the norm for liberal arts students. Because of this, faculty and staff decided that class material needed to be presented through applied academics. The new curriculum demonstrated the relevance of subject matter in general education classes to …

Glass Transition Behavior Of Thin Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Films On Silica, Moses T. Kabomo Jan 2002

Glass Transition Behavior Of Thin Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Films On Silica, Moses T. Kabomo

Masters Theses

"Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry (MDSC) was used to study the glass transition behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) adsorbed onto silica substrates from toluene. Untreated fumed amorphous silica and silica treated with hexamethyldisilazane were used for the adsorption to probe the effect of polymer- substrate interactions. To test the effect of molecular weight on the Tg of adsorbed polymers, low polydispersity PMMA samples of varying molecular weights were used. The results revealed a broadening of the glass transition towards high temperatures. The observed increase in the glass transition breadth varied with adsorbed amount and the type of silica used for …

Stratigraphy And Diagenesis Of The Paleoproterozoic Bushy Park Zinc-Lead Deposit, South Africa, William Daniel Baugaard

Masters Theses

“The Bushy Park zinc-lead deposit is located in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. The sulfides are hosted by karst-related breccias that were formed in carbonate shelf deposits of the Neoarchean (2.55 Ga) Campbellrand Subgroup. These rocks are dolomitized completely and silicified partially but have not undergone major metamorphism and thus display remarkable preservation of depositional fabrics. The stratigraphic interval includes the Papkuil and Klippan Formations (> 210 m), a sequence of cyclic microbial laminates interbedded with domed and columnar stromatolites. The Klippan is distinguished from other formations b intense silicification and brecciation. These strata are overlain by the Kogelbeen …

Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah Cunningham Walker

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

“Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry” seeks to define a collegial relationship through the experiences of two first year doctoral students at a large state-supported university. The techniques used to develop the co-constructed narrative parallel the authors’ development of a collaborative relationship. Using autoethnographic essays and interactive interviews, the authors co-construct several narratives that describe the process of moving from a friendly, social relationship to a scholarly, collaborative relationship, as well as the process of moving from peer reviewers to co-authors. An introductory narrative frames the paper; each of the “interior” narratives is accompanied by an extensive analytic introduction and …

System And Lifeworld In Habermas's Theory Of Law, Hugh Baxter Jan 2002

System And Lifeworld In Habermas's Theory Of Law, Hugh Baxter

Cardozo Law Review

Jürgen Habermas's recent work on law and democracy divides into two parts. With his "discourse theory of law and democracy," Habermas seeks to explain the conditions under which modern constitutional legal and political orders may claim legitimacy. Here Habermas's method is primarily philosophical and legal-theoretical. The second part of the project - the part on which this article focuses - develops what Habermas calls his "communication theory of society." Here Habermas seeks to "translate" the normative conclusions of his discourse theory into a substantive social-theoretical model. The idea is to determine whether the ambitious normative theory of democracy is plausible …

Correlation Of Baccalaureate Nursing Students’ Portfolio Evaluation Scores With Other Measures Of Academic Performance, Karen A. Karlowicz

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A portfolio evaluation tool had been created by undergraduate nursing faculty at Old Dominion University School of Nursing to enable student portfolios to be used as an adjunct method of program evaluation. While the tool was previously judged to have face validity and high inter-rater reliability, the lack of evidence to show that portfolio scores were comparable to other measures of academic performance used to determine the attainment of program outcomes was a problem. Thus, the purpose of this project was to investigate the extent to which portfolio evaluation scores correspond with other measures of academic performance.

There were four …

Suggestions Regarding Cross-Cultural Environment As Context For Aging And Human Development In Non-Western Cultures, Frank E. Eyetsemitan Jan 2002

Suggestions Regarding Cross-Cultural Environment As Context For Aging And Human Development In Non-Western Cultures, Frank E. Eyetsemitan

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

An individual's aging and human development always occur within a particular cultural context, but given the dominance of Western culture, the environment of non-Western societies is cross-cultural - it includes not only a non-Western dimension, but also Global and Western dimensions. The Western dimension is made up of those characteristics associated with Western societies, which are now found in non-Western societies, for example, Western education, healthcare services, and industrialization. The non-Western dimension, on the other hand, is made up of those attributes that are indigenous to the people, e.g., traditional healing. The Global dimension is characterized by standards that all …
