Student Teachers' Perception Of Their Exposure To Special Population, Henry S. Williams, Osman Alawiye, Don Woodcock
Student Teachers' Perception Of Their Exposure To Special Population, Henry S. Williams, Osman Alawiye, Don Woodcock
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
The preparation of pre-service teachers to be culturally responsive is becoming more critical as America's minority student population continues to rapidly increase. It is generally acknowledged that the public school classroom is the place where pre-service teachers experience and acquire culturally responsive behaviors such as interdependency with in-service teachers and students, parents, administrators and stake holding associations. The most critical among these is the experience the pre-service candidates receive with culturally diverse students. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which a Pacific Northwest undergraduate teacher preparation program provided its pre-service candidates work opportunities with …
Developing Linguistic Literacy: Perspectives From Corpus Linguistics And Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Douglas Biber, Randi Reppen, Susan M. Conrad
Developing Linguistic Literacy: Perspectives From Corpus Linguistics And Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Douglas Biber, Randi Reppen, Susan M. Conrad
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In their conceptual framework for linguistic literacy development, Ravid & Tolchinsky synthesize research studies from several perspectives. One of these is corpus-based research, which has been used for several large-scale research studies of spoken and written registers over the past 20 years. In this approach, a large, principled collection of natural texts (a 'corpus') is analysed using computational and interactive techniques, to identify the salient linguistic characteristics of each register or text variety. Three characteristics of corpus-based analysis are particularly important (see Biber, Conrad & Reppen 1998):(1) a special concern for the representativeness of the text sample being analysed, and …
Borrowings Into Kisi As Evidence Of Mande Expansionism And Influence, George Tucker Childs
Borrowings Into Kisi As Evidence Of Mande Expansionism And Influence, George Tucker Childs
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Strong claims have been made as to the influence of Mande languages on the languages of the Atlantic Group. This paper analyzes Mande borrowings in one Atlantic language in order to understand the nature of that influence. The Atlantic language of focus is Kisi, a member of the Southern Branch, spoken primarily in Guinea. The Kisi people have separated from their closest relatives on the Atlantic Coast in historic times, probably due to the second Mande expansionist wave of the sixteenth century at the collapse of the Mali Empire. Today the Kisi are completely surrounded and interpenetrated by speakers of …

Querying Geographically Dispersed, Heterogeneous Data Stores: The Pperfxchange Approach, Matthew Edward Colgrove
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis details PPerfXchange’s approach for querying geographically dispersed heterogeneous data stores. While elements of PPerfXchange’s method have been implemented for other application areas, PPerfXchange shows how these elements can be applied to parallel performance analysis. The accomplishments of this thesis are:
- The design of an architecture for PPerfXchange, giving a uniform method to query heterogeneous data stores;
- A proof of concept prototype implementation of PPerfXchange including a partial implementation of an XQuery processor and a relational database virtual XML document; and
- Evaluation of PPerfXchange using example parallel performance analysis data.

The Goal Of This Study Was To Examine Differences In The Psychological Characteristics Of Patients Admitted To The Hospital For Acute Or Chronic Myocardial Infarction (Mi) Or Unstable Angina (Ua). Depression, Anger, Anxiety, Curiosity, Defensiveness, Social Support, And Coping Were Evaluated For 165 Patients (86 Mi And 79 Ua), Who Were Tested On The Cardiology Stepdown Ward Of Tampa General Hospital. The Following Psychological Measures Were Administered To These Patients: The Beck Depression Inventory (Bdi), The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Staxi-2), The Rationality/Emotional Defensiveness (R/Ed) Scale, The Adult Form Of The Coping Responses Inventory (Cri-Adult), The Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (Isel), The Illness Perception Questionnaire (Ipq), The State-Trait Personality Inventory (Stpi), And The Structured Clinical Interview (Scid-I) For The Dsm - Iv. Significantly More Chronic Patients Than Acute Patients Met Criteria For Depression As Measured By The Scid Following Admission To The Hospital, And More Ua Than Mi Patients Also Met These Criteria. However, No Differences Were Found Between The Acute Vi And Chronic Mi And Ua Patients Two Weeks Prior To Admission. Results Of This Study Also Indicated That Chronic Patients And Ua Patients Reported A Greater Frequency Of Illness Symptoms And Tended To Cope With Their Heart Disease Through Avoidant Strategies. Chronic Patients Endorsed Higher Levels Of State And Trait Anger Compared With Acute Patients, And Ua Patients Were Less Likely To Believe That Their Illness Could Be Cured Or Controlled (Control Of Cure) Than Mi Patients. Based On The Results Of This Study, It Appears That Avoidance Coping May Be An Insufficient Strategy For Addressing Negative Emotions Of Chronic Patients And Ua Patients. In Addition, Perceived Lack Of Control Over The Success Of Treatment May Be Related To Depression For Ua Patients. These Findings Have Important Implications For The Development And Implementation Of Interventions Designed To Address Perceived Control Over Treatment Effectiveness And Coping Skills For Negative Emotions In The Treatment And Rehabilitation Of Cardiac Patients., Gregory J. Spirakis

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to analyze how the adoption of an electronic writing portfolio led to institutional change at an institution of higherEducation that chose to adopt the Electronic Writing Portfolio (EWP) to assess the writing skills of their students. This study also analyzed the perceptions and experiences of key administrators and faculty that participated in the adoption of the EWP. The research questions addressed in this study were: (1) To what extent has the institution demonstrated that the EWP is linked to the mission of the institution? (2) What is the institutional evidence that faculty participated in …
Timber, Trade, And Transformation: A Historical Geography Of Mahogany In Honduras, Craig Stephen Revels
Timber, Trade, And Transformation: A Historical Geography Of Mahogany In Honduras, Craig Stephen Revels
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Combining archival and field investigation, this study reconstructs the historical geography of mahogany in Honduras. Focusing on the north coast, its temporal focus stretches from the mid-eighteenth century through the last years of the nineteenth century. This incorporates the earliest stages of the commercial mahogany trade in Honduras, its decline and subsequent rebirth, its boom period in the mid-1800s, and its eventual decline. The initial chapters of the study address cultural aspects of the mahogany trade. The mahogany extraction process is examined in detail to provide a foundation for discussion of the expansion and development of the trade itself. With …
Cardboard To Concrete: Reconstructing The Texas Colonias Threshold, Roderick R. Williams
Cardboard To Concrete: Reconstructing The Texas Colonias Threshold, Roderick R. Williams
UC Law Journal
Third world diseases and general squalor have run rampant in the United States-Mexico border area, particularly in Texas. The problems facing residents in Texas colonias-developments often characterized by substandard housing including a lack of access to water and wastewater facilities-gained attention in Texas in the mid and late 1990s. However the Texas legislature and state and federal programs have not successfully solved the shocking problem. This note reviews the current state of Texas colonias, the conditions that allowed Texas' colonias to proliferate, and recent efforts to both halt the growth of colonias and meliorate the difficulties that current residents face …

Is This Journalism?: A Study Of Whether The Snapshots On The Front Page Of Usa Today Adhere To Journalistic Standards, Emily Arnette Vines
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis examined 22 Snapshots on the front-pages of USA Today from April 2001 to determine whether they adhered to the journalism standards of wholeness, accuracy, and credibility. Fourteen were found not whole, 8 were not accurate, and 3 were not credible according to the definitions of this thesis. The researcher compared the data in the Snapshots to the data obtained from the cited source and interviewed sources as well as a news assistant and graphics editor at USA Today. The researcher found four possible explanations for the poor quality of the Snapshots and examined the routines of Snapshot production, …
Denitrification Potential Of Sediment From A Future Mississippi River Diversion Site In Louisiana, Roy Ryuta Iwai
Denitrification Potential Of Sediment From A Future Mississippi River Diversion Site In Louisiana, Roy Ryuta Iwai
LSU Master's Theses
Denitrification potential was determined in surface sediment from Lake Cataouatche, the receiving basin for a future Mississippi River diversion located in the northern portion of the Barataria Basin estuary. Nitrate removal and denitrification was measured in the laboratory using static sediment microcosms flooded with lake water. Dissolved potassium nitrate (KNO3) was added to the microcosms to achieve: 1) an initial nitrate concentration similar to the mean Mississippi River concentration (~1.4 mg NO3-N l-1), and, 2) a high initial nitrate concentration to elicit a denitrification potential (~50 mg NO3-N l-1). Denitrification …

Collaboration Or Self-Preservation: The Military Code Of Conduct, Rodney Ray Lemay
Collaboration Or Self-Preservation: The Military Code Of Conduct, Rodney Ray Lemay
LSU Master's Theses
In 1955, Secretary of Defense Charles Wilson established a special committee to investigate allegations of misconduct by American POW’s during the Korean War. The Communists had used the prisoners for propaganda purposes and extended the battlefield into the POW camp as never before. The committee proposed the Code of Conduct as a means of preventing similar occurrences in future conflicts. The Code of Conduct puts into words, for the first time, concepts which had evolved from the experiences of American POW’s in the almost 200 years of combat preceding its development. Americans who became POW’s during conflicts after the implementation …
The Ligase Detection Reaction: The Evolution Of A Mutation Detection Strategy, Hannah D. Farquar
The Ligase Detection Reaction: The Evolution Of A Mutation Detection Strategy, Hannah D. Farquar
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Early detection of genetic mutations is important for control of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. Early detection requires methods that detect small amounts of mutated DNA in very large amounts of normal or wild type DNA. One method to detect mutated DNA is the ligase detection reaction (LDR). Since its inception LDR has evolved greatly from a simple detection reaction after PCR amplification to PCR/RE/LDR, a scheme which uses nucleoside base analogs in PCR to convert wild type sequences to sequences containing restriction endonuclease (RE) sites which can then be cleaved leaving only mutant sequences for detection by LDR. …

A Stylistic And Analytical Study Of Concerto No.2 For Piano And Orchestra, Op.33, By Lee Hoiby, Ji-Won Mun
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Lee Hoiby’s Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 33, completed in 1980, is a welcome addition to the piano concerto repertory. The concerto was first performed June 6, 1980, in Chicago by Lee Hoiby with the American Chamber Symphony conducted by Robert Frisbie. This concerto contains the usual three movements and reflects many stylistic traits of late Romantic music. The purpose of this paper is to provide a stylistic and analytical examination of Lee Hoiby’s Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra, Op.33. The paper is organized into three chapters. The first chapter includes biographical information about Hoiby, …
"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer
"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Although the poems of the troubadours have been extensively studied almost since they were first composed and the troubadours themselves indicate that they tried to create interactions between the melodies and the words, the melodies and the interactions between the poems and melodies in the complete songs have been examined much less intensively. In this dissertation I delve into the songs of the late twelfth-century troubadour Folquet de Marseille whose thirteen songs surviving with their melodies provide a varied collection of a suitable size to permit intensive analysis of poetic and musical compositional practices and the interactions between the two. …

Rum Aroma Descriptive Analysis, Sabina Maza Gomez
Rum Aroma Descriptive Analysis, Sabina Maza Gomez
LSU Master's Theses
Rum contains a large number of compounds that contribute to the complex aroma, some of which present in a very small amount. This fact represents a problem for the use of chemical analysis as a way to ascertain the quality of rum and to determine differences in rums products. Descriptive sensory analysis techniques can be useful in such circumstance, not only because they are easier to achieve, but because they give valuable information on the actual perceived aroma of the products. The first part of this work consisted of the development of lexicon for describing rums. A group of 5 …
The Future In Feminism : Reading Strategies For Feminist Theory And Science Fiction, Alcena Madeline Davis Rogan
The Future In Feminism : Reading Strategies For Feminist Theory And Science Fiction, Alcena Madeline Davis Rogan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Contemporary feminist theory, especially in its more dialectical manifestations, is read in this study as describing a relationship between present and future. In this reading, the work of feminist theory contains a “present;” that is, an articulation of the specific problem or question that it addresses. The work of feminist theory also contains a “future,” either implicit or explicit, and often both. An explicit “future” in feminist theory states a praxis-model or specific call-to-arms that claims political effectuality; claims that its implementation might help to ameliorate, in some way, the status quo of sexual politics. An implicit “future” in feminist …
