Impact Of Family Involvement On Student Academic Achievement, Jennifer L. Meyer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate beliefs, barriers, and current levels of parental involvement in the education of their child. There were three research questions: 1. Is there a relationship between differing parenting styles, social economic status, and family configurations and beliefs about parental involvement in the education of their child? 2. What prevents parents of differing parenting styles, social economic status, and family configurations from being involved in their child's education? 3. Is there a relationship between differing parenting styles, social economic status, and family configurations and current involvement in their child's education? Seventy-five parents of sixth …

Mechanisms Of Karst Breakdown Formation In The Gypsum Karst Of The Fore-Ural Region, Russia (From Observations In The Kungurskaja Cave), Vjacheslav Andrejchuk, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 2002

Mechanisms Of Karst Breakdown Formation In The Gypsum Karst Of The Fore-Ural Region, Russia (From Observations In The Kungurskaja Cave), Vjacheslav Andrejchuk, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

The fore-Ural is a classical region of intrastratal gypsum karst. The intensive development of karst in the Permian gypsums and anhydrites causes numerous practical problems, the subsidence hazard being the most severe. Mechanisms of karst breakdown formation were studied in detail in the Kunguskaya Cave area. The cave and its setting are characteristic to the region and, being a site of detalied stationary studies for many years, the cave represents a convenient location for various karst and speleological investigations. Breakdown structures related to cavities of the Kungurskaya Cave type develop by two mechanisms: gravitational (sagging and fall-in of the ceilings …

Tort theory has had a brief but wondrous history. Los Angeles and the UCLA School of Law lie at the core of that history – much more, I am sure, than is likely to be remembered.

The Evolution Of Corporate Law: A Cross- Country Comparison, Katharina Pistor, Yoram Keinan, Jan Kleinheisterkamp, Mark D. West Jan 2002

The Evolution Of Corporate Law: A Cross- Country Comparison, Katharina Pistor, Yoram Keinan, Jan Kleinheisterkamp, Mark D. West

Faculty Scholarship

The importance of law and legal institutions for economic development is widely acknowledged today. The invention of credit mechanisms to support long-distance trade has been hailed as one of the preconditions for the development of capitalism in Europe. The corporate form is regarded as another milestone for industrialization, the creation of viable market economies, and ultimately economic prosperity. Many former socialist countries quickly enacted new corporate codes or revived their pre-World War Two ("WWII") legislation. The failure of major privatization efforts to enhance enterprise efficiency is attributed to weaknesses in corporate governance, of which the corporate law is a crucial …

"Good Stuff For Wise Men To Laugh At Or Honest Men To Take Pleasure At": The Arthurian Tradition During The Renaissance, Crystal Stallman Jan 2002

"Good Stuff For Wise Men To Laugh At Or Honest Men To Take Pleasure At": The Arthurian Tradition During The Renaissance, Crystal Stallman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Contrary to the commonly held view that the English Renaissance abandoned the realm of Arthuriana as an inspiration for literary and other cultural texts, I demonstrate in my thesis that Arthurian texts from this period took on new forms and shifted their focus. Although a decline in the overall amount of Arthuriana produced during the Renaissance occurred, as opposed to the Middle Ages, interest in Arthur certainly did not die out. When comparing the amount of Arthuriana of the Middle Ages to that of the Renaissance, it is necessary to remember that the Middle Ages covered nearly a millennium, whereas …

A Simulation Program For Electronics Skill Knowledge Instruction At A Selected Community College In Taiwan, Hung-Jen Chen Jan 2002

A Simulation Program For Electronics Skill Knowledge Instruction At A Selected Community College In Taiwan, Hung-Jen Chen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since computers came into existence, simulations have been associated with it as the two inseparable media, simulations and computers, have had a mutually beneficial effect. With the advent of the flexible microcomputer, simulation has been widely used. In recent years, computer technology has infiltrated every sector in society, especially the educational system and industrial operations where simulations are essential for satisfying both instructional and industrial needs. Simulation effectiveness research has been mixed in both the educational system and industries. Therefore, it is still necessary to evaluate how effective computer simulation is as an instructional method or strategy.

Parental Perceptions On Maintaining Heritage Languages Of Cld Students, Ruth Lingxin Yan Jan 2002

Parental Perceptions On Maintaining Heritage Languages Of Cld Students, Ruth Lingxin Yan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The rapid growth of the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in public schools of the United States has been steady in the past decades. Issues concerning CLD students such as their school failures, high dropout rates, the limited English proficiency, family poverty, and their unequal job opportunities, have caused increasing concerns from policy makers, school administrators and educators at all school levels. Various efforts to modify CLD students' social and academic disadvantages have been attempted through educational approaches, especially in the form of heritage language support in bilingual education programs initiated at the local school levels and funded by …

Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson Jan 2002

Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research suggests a relationship between cultural identity negotiation and the phenomenon of border crossing. While a wealth of literature exists on the topic of migration, few studies reflect a scope that includes in-depth analysis of the experiences of Afro-Caribbean women in the United States.Through ethnographic and autoethnographic methodologies, and using a feminist theoretical lens, this study explores issues relating to cultural identity negotiation in the lives of 10 Black women from Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad, who now reside in the Midwest region of the United States. Analysis based on a grounded theory approach, allowed themes to emerge from …

The Historical Debate Among Leaders Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints On The Topic Of The United Nations, Katie Marie Lenhard

Theses and Dissertations

Since the inception of the United Nations in 1945, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have made public statements regarding the international peace and security organization. To the confusion of many Church members, who often look to their leaders for prophetic guidance on numerous spiritual and temporal topics, these statements have been conflicting. Some Church leaders have clearly opposed the United Nations and others have openly supported it, offering various ideological explanations for their beliefs. Yet, it is evident that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has never made an official position on the …
