Autotopography: Graffiti, Landscapes, & Selves, Deirdre Heddon

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

For some time now I have been interested in autobiographical performance -- some form of the theatrical, in which performers explicitly use personal material in their work. Within this general field of autobiography and performance, one area of research concerns performances that are dependent on being located in personalised space -- what could be called, then, site-specific autobiographical performance. A recent example of this would be the performance Bubbling Tom (2000), by the UK based performer Mike Pearson, which saw Pearson return to the village of his childhood, to reflect upon and re-enact certain memories, events and persons …

Will More Aggressive Marketing Practices Lead To Greater Tort Liability For Prescription Drug Manufacturers?, Richard C. Ausness Jan 2002

Will More Aggressive Marketing Practices Lead To Greater Tort Liability For Prescription Drug Manufacturers?, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Manufacturers of prescription drugs have begun to market their products more aggressively than they did in the past. These marketing efforts are not confined to health care professionals alone; pharmaceutical companies now engage in extensive direct-to-consumer advertising on radio and television, in the print media, and even on the Internet. While these promotional efforts no doubt increase sales, they may also lead to greater tort liability for drug-related injuries. The most likely theories of liability are failure to warn and negligent marketing. Liability for inadequate warnings will almost certainly increase if courts abandon the learned intermediary rule and require drug …

Formation Et Soutien Pour Les Scientifiques Démographiques Des Pays En Développement: Rapport Du Groupe D'Experts—Sommaire Et Recommandations, Jane Menken, Ann K. Blanc, Cynthia B. Lloyd

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Training And Support Of Developing-Country Population Scientists: A Panel Report—Summary And Recommendations, Jane Menken, Ann K. Blanc, Cynthia B. Lloyd

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From its earliest days, the Population Council has recognized the importance and value of training population scientists from developing countries. Since 1952, the Council’s social science fellowship program has sustained a commitment to this goal; approximately 1,500 fellowships have been awarded for pre- and postdoctoral training in population studies. While the demand for population scientists remains strong, the field has changed substantially since those early years and a review of the program was needed. The Mellon Foundation funded a project in 2000 to assess future needs for training and support of population scientists from developing countries and assembled an international …

Facts About Adolescents From The Demographic And Health Survey—Statistical Tables For Program Planning: Burkina Faso 1998–1999, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Population Council initiated its work on adolescents in the mid-1990s. At that time, those advocating greater attention to adolescent issues were concerned about adolescent fertility—particularly outside of marriage—and adolescent “risk-taking” behavior. As an international scientific organization with its mandate centered around the needs of developing countries, the Council sought a more nuanced and context-specific understanding of the problems confronting adolescents in the developing world. In working with colleagues inside and outside the Council, it became clear that information on adolescents, and the way data are organized, were limiting the ability to understand the diversity of their experiences or to …

Ancient Antibiotics : Tetracycline In Human And Animal Bone From The Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, Corey Maggiano Jan 2002

Ancient Antibiotics : Tetracycline In Human And Animal Bone From The Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, Corey Maggiano

HIM 1990-2015

Two decades ago archaeologists in northern Africa discovered evidence that an antibiotic was somehow included in diet of ancient peoples, possibly affecting the health of the population. It has been proposed that the causative organisms are Streptomyces aureofaciens - ubiquitous, mold-like, tetracycline-producing bacteria that could have contaminated grain products. Upon consumption, tetracyclines are incorporated into developing or remodeling bone, remaining observable under ultraviolet light for thousands of years. The current project focuses on an analysis of Roman-Egyptian human and animal bone from the Dakhleh Oasis in southwestern Egypt (100 BC to AD 360). Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) is used …

Jose Marti's Ismaelillo: An English Translation, Tyler Fisher Jan 2002

Jose Marti's Ismaelillo: An English Translation, Tyler Fisher

HIM 1990-2015

Few figures in the history of the Americas are surrounded with more colorful lore and acclamation than the Cuban politician, teacher, patriot, and poet Jose Marti. Among Marti's literary contributions, his Ismaelillo, a collection of fifteen poems published in 1882, claims prominence as both Marti's first book of poems and as a seminal Latin American text. Celebrated for its sincere communication of paternal love and lauded as the genesis of Hispanic literary modernism, Ismaelillo captures the longing of an exiled father separated from his son and homeland. Its language is at once evocative of classical Spanish literature and innovative, incorporating …

"Macroscopic'' Quantum Superpositions: Atom-Field Entangled And Steady States By Two-Photon Processes, Moorad Alexanian, Subir K. Bose Jan 2002

"Macroscopic'' Quantum Superpositions: Atom-Field Entangled And Steady States By Two-Photon Processes, Moorad Alexanian, Subir K. Bose

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The dynamics of an exact two-photon Hamiltonian is used to study the time evolution of an initially disentangled pure state of the atom-field system as it goes through cycles of entanglement separated by instances of disentanglement. For specific initial states of the electromagnetic field, the output state is a pure quantum superposition of a squeezed vacuum state and an orthogonal, odd-photon-number state. The odd-photon-number state, which is not a squeezed state, exhibits both nonclassical sub-Poissonian and classical super-Poissonian photon statistics. In the latter case the quantum superposition resembles a macroscopic superposition state. Conditions are obtained on the atom-cavity interaction time …

Dynamic Superimposition Of Synthetic Objects On Rigid And Simple-Deformable Real Objects, Yann Argotti, Larry Davis, Valerie Outters, Jannick P. Rolland Jan 2002

Dynamic Superimposition Of Synthetic Objects On Rigid And Simple-Deformable Real Objects, Yann Argotti, Larry Davis, Valerie Outters, Jannick P. Rolland

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A current challenge in augmented reality applications is the accurate superimposition of synthetic objects on real objects within the environment. This challenge is heightened when the real objects are in motion and/or are non-rigid. In this article, we present a robust method for real-time, optical superimposition of synthetic objects on dynamic, rigid and simple-deformable real objects. Moreover, we illustrate this general method with the VRDA Tool, a medical education application enabling the visualization of internal human knee joint anatomy on a real human knee. Simple Physics Of Quadratic Spatial Solitons, Gaetano Assanto, George I. Stegeman Jan 2002

Simple Physics Of Quadratic Spatial Solitons, Gaetano Assanto, George I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Spatial solitons in quadratically nonlinear media result from the interplay of parametric gain, diffraction and cascading phase shift. Their main features are well understood in mathematical terms, and several experiments have been successfully carried out which demonstrate their observability and most important properties. Here we provide an intuitive interpretation of some of the underlying physics, outlining the processes that govern their excitation, propagation and interaction forces.

Electrophoresis Of An End-Labeled Polymer Chain: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Aniket Bhattacharya, Andrey Milchev Jan 2002

Electrophoresis Of An End-Labeled Polymer Chain: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Aniket Bhattacharya, Andrey Milchev

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We study the conformational and the dynamic properties of an end-labeled (telechelic) polymer chain embedded in a porous medium made of randomly distributed immobile spherical obstacles using a stochastic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method for several obstacle densities rho(imp) and for various field intensities F(x) applied only to one end of the chain. For F(x)=0, the chain initially shrinks with increasing density of the obstacles rho(imp). In general, for small F(x) and low rho(imp), the chain elongates along the direction of the force and shrinks in the transverse direction whereby this effect becomes more pronounced at larger chain lengths. However, …

Protein Farnesyltransferase And Protein Prenylation In Plasmodium Falciparum, Debopam Chakrabarti, Thiago Da Silva, Jennifer Barger, Steve Paquette, Hetal Patel, Shelley Patterson, Charles M. Allen

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Comparison of the malaria parasite and mammalian protein prenyltransferases and their cellular substrates is important for establishing this enzyme as a target for developing antimalarial agents. Nineteen heptapeptides differing only in their carboxyl-terminal amino acid were tested as alternative substrates of partially purified Plasmodium falciparum protein farnesyltransferase. Only NRSCAIM and NRSCAIQ serve as substrates, with NRSCAIM being the best. Peptidomimetics, FTI-276 and GGTI-287, inhibit the transferase with IC50 values of 1 and 32 nm, respectively. Incubation of P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes with [H-3]farnesol labels 50- and 22-28-kDa proteins, whereas [H-3]geranylgeraniol labels only 22-28-kDa proteins. The 50-kDa protein is shown to be …

Induced Modulation Instability Of Partially Spatially Incoherent Light With Varying Perturbation Periods, Zhigang Chen, Jill Klinger, Demetrios N. Christodoulides Jan 2002

Induced Modulation Instability Of Partially Spatially Incoherent Light With Varying Perturbation Periods, Zhigang Chen, Jill Klinger, Demetrios N. Christodoulides

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We demonstrate experimentally that a periodic perturbation on a partially spatially incoherent optical beam induces modulation instability that depends strongly on the perturbation periods as well as on the strength of the nonlinearity and the degree of spatial coherence. At a fixed value of the nonlinearity and coherence, the incoherent modulation instability has a maximum growth at a preferred perturbation period (or spatial frequency), leading to the formation of ordered patterns. While the nonlinearity in our photorefractive system is inherently anisotropic, pattern control and pattern switching with anisotropic coherence is readily realized. Our experimental observations are in good agreement with …

Study Of Temperature Dependence For The Electron Injection-Induced Effects In Gan, Leonid Chernyak, William Burdett, Andrei Osinsky Jan 2002

Study Of Temperature Dependence For The Electron Injection-Induced Effects In Gan, Leonid Chernyak, William Burdett, Andrei Osinsky

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Electron-beam injection-induced increase of minority carrier diffusion length in p-type GaN was studied as a function of sample temperature ranging from 25 degreesC to 130 degreesC. It was found that the rate for diffusion length increase exponentially decays with increasing temperature. This decay was attributed to a temperature-activated release of electron-beam injected electrons trapped on Mg levels. The activation energy of these levels was found to be similar to178 meV. This is in good agreement with the previously reported position for Mg levels in the GaN band gap.

Influence Of Electron Injection On Performance Of Gan Photodetectors, Leonid Chernyak, Alfons Schulte, Andrei Osinsky, John Graff, E. Fred Schubert Jan 2002

Influence Of Electron Injection On Performance Of Gan Photodetectors, Leonid Chernyak, Alfons Schulte, Andrei Osinsky, John Graff, E. Fred Schubert

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

It is demonstrated that short-time (up to 1200 s) electron injection into the p-region of GaN p-n junction, as a result of forward bias application, leads to a long-term multifold enhancement of the device peak responsivity as well as to a spectral broadening of the photoresponse. The effect is found to persist for several days and is related to an increased minority carrier diffusion length in the p region, due to an injected electron trapping on deep levels associated with Mg acceptors.

Analysis Of Hierarchical Cellular Networks With Mobile Base Stations, Wei Cui, Mostafa A. Bassiouni

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

In this paper. we develop and evaluate a hierarchical cellular architecture for totally mobile wireless networks (TMWNs). Extensive performance tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of a two-tier system and compare its throughput, handoff blocking rate and new call success rate with those obtained by a one-tier model. Our tests have shown that when the total number of channels is kept the same, the two-tier system outperformed the one-tier counterpart under all load conditions. Under the constraint of equal power consumption, the two-tier system still achieved improvement over the one-tier system. especially at light and medium load levels. The …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

To identify human proteins that bind to the Smac and caspase-9 binding pocket on the baculoviral inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) repeat 3 (BIR3) domain of human XIAP, we used BIR3 as an affinity reagent, followed by elution with the BIR3 binding peptide AVPIA microsequencing, and mass spectrometry. The mature serine protease Omi (also known as HtrA2) was identified as a mitochondrial direct BIR3-binding protein and a caspase activator. Like mature Smac (also known as Diablo), mature Omi contains a conserved LAP-binding motif (AVPS) at its N terminus, which is exposed after processing of its N-terminal mitochondrial targeting sequence upon …
