A Focus On Human Resource Management Practices After The Attacks On September 11th, 2001, Erin Stauffer
A Focus On Human Resource Management Practices After The Attacks On September 11th, 2001, Erin Stauffer
Honors Capstones
This thesis concerns Human Resource Management practices after the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001. It is divided into three main sections. The first section describes expert opinions on various topics. Those topics include emergency procedures for handling Anthrax contamination and preventative mail handling procedures. Recommendations on plans of evacuation and emergency revival procedures are given along with information about implementing an effective security system. Employee Assistance Programs are discussed and harassment policies and diversity training issues are examined due to the unfortunate backlash against Muslim workers since to the attacks. The second section analyzes real life data obtained from …

Managing Information Technology Investment Risk: A Real Options Perspective, Michel Benaroch
Managing Information Technology Investment Risk: A Real Options Perspective, Michel Benaroch
Management - All Scholarship
Past information systems research on real options has focused mainly on evaluating information technology (IT) investments that embed a single, a-priori known option. However, since real options are not inherent in any IT investment, they usually must be planned and intentionally embedded in a target IT investment in order to control various investment-specific risks, just like financial risk management uses carefully chosen options to actively manage investment risks. Moreover, when an IT investment involves multiple risks, there could be numerous ways to reconfigure the investment using different series of cascading (compound) options. In this light, we present an approach for …

Photocarrier Drift Mobility Measurements And Electron Localization In Nanoporous Silicon, P. N. Rao, Eric A. Schiff, L. Tsybeskov, P. Fauchet
Physics - All Scholarship
We report photocarrier time-of-flight measurements in diode structures made of highly porous crystalline silicon. The corresponding electron and hole drift mobilities are very small ð<104 cm2=V sÞ compared to homogeneous crystalline silicon. The mobilities are dispersive (i.e., having a power-law decay with time or length-scale), but are only weakly temperature-dependent. The dispersion parameter lies in the range 0.55–0.65 for both electrons and holes. We conclude that the drift mobilities are limited by the nanoporous geometry, and not by disorder-induced localized states acting as traps. This conclusion is surprising in the context of luminescence models based on radiative recombination of localized excitons.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
Computational web portals are designed to simplify access to diverse sets of high performance computing resources, typically through an interface to computational Grid tools. An important shortcoming of these portals is their lack of interoperable and reusable services. This paper presents an overview of research efforts undertaken by our group to build interoperating portal services around a Web Services model. We present a comprehensive view of an interoperable portal architecture, beginning with core portal services that can be used to build Application Web Services, which in turn may be aggregated and managed through portlet containers.

A Practical Approach To Solve Secure Multi-Party Computation Problems, Wenliang Du, Zhijun Zhan
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
Secure Multi-party Computation (SMC) problems deal with the following situation: Two (or many) parties want to jointly perform a computation. Each party needs to contribute its private input to this computation, but no party should disclose its private inputs to the other parties, or to any third party. With the proliferation of the Internet, SMC problems becomes more and more important. So far no practical solution has emerged, largely because SMC studies have been focusing on zero information disclosure, an ideal security model that is expensive to achieve. Aiming at developing practical solutions to SMC problems, we propose a new …

Prescription drug expenditures make up less than 10 percent of total personal health care expenditures in the United States, but over the last decade the amount that Americans spend on prescription drugs has grown much faster than any other component of personal health care. For example, between 1999 and 2000, hospital care costs rose about 5 percent, physicians and clinical services 6 percent, while prescription drug expenditures climbed more than 17 percent. In dollar amounts, prescription drug expenditures doubled, from $61 billion to $122 billion, between 1995 and 2000. Is this an unwarranted expense that needs to be controlled, or …

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
The bead research community lost a principal member when Peter Francis, Jr., director of the Center for Bead Research in Lake Placid, New York, died December 8, 2002, while on a research trip to Ghana, West Africa. Pete was widely known and respected, and was responsible for significantly increasing people's awareness—on a worldwide scale—of beads and their place in human culture through his many publications, lectures, workshops, symposia, and internet website. He leaves a void that will be very hard, if not impossible, to fill.

Transnational Service Of Process And Discovery In Federal Court Proceedings: An Overview, Phillip A. Buhler
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The nature of the maritime business makes it inevitable that much litigation, usually taking place in federal court, involves issues of service of process for the summons and complaint on foreign entities, and that discovery involves efforts to depose witnesses overseas and to collect documents, materials, and information from foreign jurisdictions. This Article is not intended to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject of transnational service of process and discovery. Many articles, in fact whole books, have been written on various aspects of these issues. However, none seem to cover the entire subject. Voluminous case law addresses various aspects …
Ethical Leadership And Communication, Jacquelynne Jordan
Ethical Leadership And Communication, Jacquelynne Jordan
Theses and Dissertations
This analysis of leadership and communication research argues that effective leadership is manifested through the ethical communication a leader practices with group members. This paper approaches leadership as an interactional process and corroborates this view with supporting research and theory from the fields of business and communication. Ethical communication is used as a framework for how groups can communicate more effectively. A review of extant literature concluded that effective leadership does not exist with the leader's hands alone, but is created through communication and interaction within the group. Findings indicated that the more effective and productive managers approach their positions …
Copyright Limitations And Contracts. An Analysis Of The Contractual Overridability Of Limitations On Copyright, Lucie Guibault
Copyright Limitations And Contracts. An Analysis Of The Contractual Overridability Of Limitations On Copyright, Lucie Guibault
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Traditional copyright law strikes a delicate balance between an author's control of original material and society's interest in the free flow of ideas, information, and commerce. In today's digitally networked environment, this balance has shifted dramatically to one side, as powerful rights holders contractually impose terms and conditions of use far beyond the bounds set by copyright law. This vitally significant book explores this conflict from its gestation through its current manifestations to its future lineaments and potential consequences. Focusing on statutory copyright limitations that enshrine constitutional rights such as freedom of expression and privacy, foster dissemination of knowledge, safeguard …
