Vowel-Consonant Patterns (Part 1), Susan Thorpe Nov 2002

Vowel-Consonant Patterns (Part 1), Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

In Vowel-Consonant Patterns (Word Ways 77221), Philip Cohen presented a list of words based on 125 of the possible 128 (2^7) 7-letter vowel-consonant (V-C) patterns. Somewhat belatedly, this has inspired me to undertake similar exercises for 8-letter words and 9-letter words. As Cohen's article appeared more than 25 years ago, before most of us were acquainted with Word Ways, I have also taken the liberty of repeating his 7-letter exercise, using different words wherever appropriate. Part 1 considers 7- and 8-letter words; Part 2 considers 9-letter words, and also analyses the patterns with regard to the number of words they …

The Alphabet Cube And Beyond, Darryl Francis Nov 2002

The Alphabet Cube And Beyond, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

Two-letter words can be plotted as points on a two-dimensional plane. The first letter of a two-letter word is plotted against the x-axis, and the second letter is plotted against the y-axis. Along the x-axis, x=1 is equivalent to the letter A, x=2 is equivalent to the letter B, and so on, with x=26 being equivalent to the letter Z. Similarly, plot the second letter of a word on the y-axis, with y=1 equivalent to A, y=2 equivalent to B, etc. So, for example, take the two-letter word HE. The H corresponds to x=8 and the E corresponds to y=5. …

New Record Pangrammatic Windows, Mike Keith

Word Ways

Most readers of Word Ways are familiar with the "accidental pangram" problem, which is to find a short 'window' (block of contiguous text) in published text that, but accident rather than deliberation, contains each letter of the alphabet at least once. The record for the shortest known accidental pangram in English has stood for 95 years, as it was reported in print by A. Cyril Pearson in The Twentieth Century Standard Puzzle Book, published in 1907. It is from The Beth Book, a popular 1897 novel by Sarah Grand (republished as recently as 1980 by The Dial Press).

Word Ways

The following squares are, in my view, the approximate equal, or superior of, the square published as My First Ten-Square (Word Ways August 2002). I invite readers to form their own views as to the relative merits of the three squares below and the August one. I give my own views inverted at the end of the article.

Sesquipedalianists, Seek No Longer, Peter Delin

Word Ways

Most actual and incipient logologists seem to pass through of being fascinated by long words, and raising such questions as what is the longest word in English or American. One reason for the eventual passing of this phase, for most of us, is the eventual realization of the fact that, as it is by no means simple to decide what counts as a word.

Ladder Words, Susan Thorpe Nov 2002

Ladder Words, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

PERVERSER, HASHISHES and INSINKING are examples of what I call Ladder Words. Each word is a self-contained ladder (PER-VER-SET, HAS-HIS-HES, INS-INK-ING) in which each trigram (3-letter group) differs from its trigram neighbour(s) by a single letter, just as do the words in a word ladder. All the examples of ladder words below are either solid words or hyphenated words. Hyphens are not shown. All 3 trigramism must be different, so that GONGOLGON (in New South Wales) is not acceptable. A few words of this genre appeared in Colloquy 98116 and these are identified in the lists below by an asterisk*. …

Shiftgrams Revisited, Darryl Francis Nov 2002

Shiftgrams Revisited, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

The concept of word-shifts was introduced in Dmitri Borgmann's Language on Vacation (1965). Consider the word COLD for instance. Shifting each of the letters three spaces forward in the alphabet, COLD becomes FROG: and shifting the letters of CHEER seven spaces forward produces JOLLY. Dmitri offered many other examples in his book.

Accomplishing Access Management On The Fihs: The Us 27 Corridor In Ocala/Marion County, Robert Frey, Kristine M. Williams, Irene Nikitopoulos

Transportation Planning, Policy, and Processes (TP3) Final Reports

US Highway 27 is a major north-south highway that originates in South Florida and crosses the Florida/Georgia state line north of Tallahassee. US 27 is a direct route to Tallahassee from Central Florida. It also provides tourists access to the region’s famous horse farms and natural recreation areas. Due to its importance to regional mobility and the state economy, US 27 carries the Florida Intrastate Highway System (FIHS) designation. The FIHS is a system of limited access (freeways) and controlled access (at- grade arterials) roadways that allow for high-speed and high-volume traffic movement within the state.

The Roles Of Companions In Geriatric Patient–Interdisciplinary Oncology Team Interactions, Laura L. Ellingson Nov 2002

The Roles Of Companions In Geriatric Patient–Interdisciplinary Oncology Team Interactions, Laura L. Ellingson

Gender and Sexuality Studies

This study examined companions' roles in interactions between patients and interdisciplinary geriatric oncology team members. Companions' roles identified include memory aid, emotional support, transcriber, aid in decision making, companionship, elaboration, advocate for patient, and interpreter. Specific patterns of variability of roles across team member disciplines include relatively passive companions who performed more active roles with physician, relatively active companions who performed more passive roles with physician, and relatively passive companions who performed more active roles when particular topics were raised, regardless of team discipline. Two patterns of stability across interactions emerged: consistently active or passive.

Homosexuality In India: Past And Present, Ruth Vanita Nov 2002

Homosexuality In India: Past And Present, Ruth Vanita

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

When I was active in the women’s movement in Delhi from 1978 to 1990 as founding coeditor of Manushi, India’s first feminist journal, homosexuality was rarely if ever discussed in left-wing, civil rights, or women’s movements, or at Delhi University, where I taught. Among the earliest newspaper reports I saw on the subject were those about female couples committing suicide, leaving behind notes declaring their undying love. In 1987, the wedding of two female police constables, Leela and Urmila, in central India, made national headlines and led to a debate on lesbianism. The women married each other outside the ambit …

Discrete Singular Convolution And Its Application To The Analysis Of Plates With Internal Supports. Part 1: Theory And Algorithm, G. W. Wei, Yibao Zhao, Y. Xiang Nov 2002

Discrete Singular Convolution And Its Application To The Analysis Of Plates With Internal Supports. Part 1: Theory And Algorithm, G. W. Wei, Yibao Zhao, Y. Xiang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper presents a novel computational approach, the discrete singular convolution (DSC) algorithm, for analysing plate structures. The basic philosophy behind the DSC algorithm for the approximation of functions and their derivatives is studied. Approximations to the delta distribution are constructed as either bandlimited reproducing kernels or approximate reproducing kernels. Unified features of the DSC algorithm for solving differential equations are explored. It is demonstrated that different methods of implementation for the present algorithm, such as global, local, Galerkin, collocation, and finite difference, can be deduced from a single starting point. The use of the algorithm for the vibration analysis …

The Choice Between Joint Venture And Wholly Owned Subsidiary: An Institutional Perspective, Daphne W. Yiu, Shige Makino Nov 2002

The Choice Between Joint Venture And Wholly Owned Subsidiary: An Institutional Perspective, Daphne W. Yiu, Shige Makino

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The study of foreign entry-mode choice has been based almost exclusively on transaction-cost theory. This theory focuses mainly on the impacts of firm- and industry-specific factors on the choice of entry mode, taking the effects of country-specific contextual factors as constant or less important. In contrast, the institutional perspective emphasizes the importance of the influence of both institutional forces embedded in national environments and decision makers' cognitive constraints on the founding conditions of new ventures. Still, this theoretical perspective has yet to provide insights into how institutional factors influence the choice of foreign entry mode. The primary goal of the …
