Wireless LAN systems based on IEEE 802.11 have been a proved and sought after technological innovation, over the past few years. In this paper, we discuss some of the technical aspects for testing and deploying a wireless LAN system at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico. This shall serve as a model test bed for future research and development, under the aegis of Ibero American Science and Technology Education Consortium (ISTEC).

Precision Measurement Of Energy And Position Resolutions Of The Btev Electromagnetic Calorimeter Prototype, Raymond Mountain, K. Khroustalev, V.A. Batarin, T. Brennan

Physics - All Scholarship

The energy dependence of the energy and position resolutions of the electromagnetic calorimeter prototype made of lead tungstate crystals produced in Bogoroditsk (Russia) and Shanghai (China) is presented. These measurementswere carried out at the Protvino accelerator using a 1 to 45 GeV electron beam. The crystals were coupled to photomultiplier tubes. The dependence of energy and position resolutions on different factors as well as the measured electromagnetic shower lateral profile are presented.

This creative dissertation is a multifaceted meditation on technological civilization circa 2000, from the imagined perspective o f an archaeologist/linguist writing some eight hundred years in the future, as well as his grandson writing two generations later. The Andes-born protagonist looks back on a career during which he has led efforts to reconstruct the English language and the cultural ambience o f a dimly remembered and heavily mythologized “Dosmil” (a contraction of Spanish “Dos Mil” for the year 2000), beginning with excavation of newspaper and magazine fragments found in the one-time English speaking country o f Belize. Casting molten metal using a segmented roll for casting continuous metal strip. A strip caster (10) for producing a continuous strip (18) includes a tundish for containing a melt and a pair of horizontally disposed water cooled composite casting rolls (84). The casting rolls are juxtaposed relative to one another for forming a pouring basin (16) for receiving molten metal. The composite rolls are formed from a plurality of annular segments (45). Each segment preferably includes at least a pair of coolant openings (34) and means for aligning the coolant openings, such as a pair of alignment openings (26). The …

Substituted monocyclic β-lactam compounds that are N-1-thiolated monolactams, and which exhibit wide-ranging antibacterial activities, having a single 4-membered azetidinone ring in which: the N-1 nitrogen atom of the azetidinone ring is bonded to sulfur but is not sulfonated, of the formula: wherein R_1-5 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, heteroalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl, or alkynyl; X is H, C, or O; and n=0-3. Chemical synthesis of these compounds by a [2+2]-imine-acid chloride cycloaddition, and methods for subsequent derivatization, are also disclosed. The compounds and compositions disclosed herein are useful as antibacterial and antibiotic agents.
