An Evaluation Of The Ispcan Inter-Sectoral Training: Child Abuse Protocols In South Africa, Amy Maheswaran Dec 2002

An Evaluation Of The Ispcan Inter-Sectoral Training: Child Abuse Protocols In South Africa, Amy Maheswaran

Theses and Graduate Projects

This research studies how child abuse has become so pervasive in South Africa and evaluates a project that provides training for professionals to learn the necessary skills to build an effective social welfare system, potentially create national procedures for serving abused children and potentially change child abuse laws. Efforts have been made to build awareness on the rights of children in South Africa. Children, before and after the apartheid regime, have been affected by the breakdown of families and oppressive laws in a patriarchal society. Child abuse services and policies have attempted to address protecting children from abuse. Despite efforts …

Selection For Maternal Behavior In Mice—Direct And Correlated Responses, Chung-Feng Chiang, Rodger K. Johnson, Merlyn K. Nielsen Dec 2002

Selection For Maternal Behavior In Mice—Direct And Correlated Responses, Chung-Feng Chiang, Rodger K. Johnson, Merlyn K. Nielsen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Three generations of divergent selection for a maternal care index (MCI) in mice were practiced in each of three replicates. MCI was recorded for 29–32 dams and litters in each replicate/line subclass. Pups of the top (or bottom) 6– 10 dams in each replicate, depending on number of females in the litters, were selected in high (H) and low (L) MCI lines. At birth, litters with more than 10 pups were standardized to 10 pups whereas litters with no more than 10 pups remained intact. On day 4, 8, 12, and 16 of lactation, time budgets during a 30-min session …

Terabit Burst Switching Final Report, Jonathan S. Turner Dec 2002

Terabit Burst Switching Final Report, Jonathan S. Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This is the final report For Washington University's Terabit Burst Switching Project, supported by DARPA and Rome Air Force Laboratory. The primary objective of the project has been to demonstrate the feasibility of Burst Switching, a new data communication service, which seeks to more effectively exploit the large bandwidths becoming available in WDM transmission systems. Burst switching systems dynamically assign data bursts to channels in optical datalinks, using routing information carried in parallel control channels.

An Optimum Greedy Algorithm For Choosing Minimal Set Of Conflicting Constraints In The Point Sequencing Problem, Florent Launay, Mitra Debasis Dec 2002

An Optimum Greedy Algorithm For Choosing Minimal Set Of Conflicting Constraints In The Point Sequencing Problem, Florent Launay, Mitra Debasis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this work, we first have proposed a technique to define the "causes" of inconsistency on an online point based reasoning constraint network. Second, we introduce an algorithm that proposes the user a minimal set of relations to remove when inconsistencies are detected. We have developed and implemented a battery of algorithms for the purpose of this type of reasoning. Some useful theorems and properties are defined for proving the 'minimal' aspect of the algorithm. Finally, we found that our investigation was a polynomially solvable sub problem of the vertex cover problem.
