The Assessment Of Language Delays In Preschoolers With The Differential Abilities Scales, Tracey Walenta
The Assessment Of Language Delays In Preschoolers With The Differential Abilities Scales, Tracey Walenta
Theses
Language-delayed preschoolers are a heterogeneous population with diverse language skills and needs. Research has demonstrated the need for more psychometrically sound assessment instruments to accurately identify preschoolers with language delays and their specific subtypes in the general preschool population. Research has also demonstrated the Differential Ability Scales to be an effective and psychometrically sound assessment measure for differentiating among preschoolers across a broad range of skills and abilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of the Differential Ability Scales in distinguishing language-delayed preschoolers and specific subtypes of language delays in the general preschool population. It was …

Effective Diagramming Techniques, Ralph H. Palmer
Effective Diagramming Techniques, Ralph H. Palmer
Masters Theses
There are a number of modeling techniques (e.g. E/R, UML, ORM) available to the software developer that claim to have features that facilitate communication of complex systems between the problem and solution domain expert. However, the basis for what “facilitate” means is rarely if at all defined in concrete terms. A new metric for measuring the effectiveness (e.g. comprehensibility, leamability, and facility to support conununications) of software modeling techniques based upon Noam Chomsky’s Universal Grammar is proposed.

Doing Family Research At The Jail: Reflections Of A Prison Widow, Joyce A. Arditti
Doing Family Research At The Jail: Reflections Of A Prison Widow, Joyce A. Arditti
The Qualitative Report
In this article, I reflect on my experience running a small family research project at a local jail. I focus on methodological and policy issues inherent in controversial research, as well as my own personal reactions to the criminal justice system. Implications of insider status are discussed as they apply to researcher stance and responsibilities in corrections settings.

Aurora Working Group: Dsr Front End Lvcsr Evaluation Au/384/02, Naveen Parihar, Joseph Picone
Publications
In this document we describe the Distributed Speech Recognition (DSR) front end large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) evaluations being conducted by the Aurora Working Group of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The objective of these evaluations is to determine the robustness of different front ends for use in client/server type telecommunications applications. The 5000-word closed-loop vocabulary task based on the DARPA Wall Street Journal (WSJ0) Corpus was chosen for these evaluations. The experiments were designed to test the following focus conditions:
- Additive Noise: six noise conditions collected from street traffic, train stations, cars, babble, restaurants and airports …

Construction Of Counterfactuals And The G-Computation Formula, Zhuo Yu, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Construction Of Counterfactuals And The G-Computation Formula, Zhuo Yu, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Robins' causal inference theory assumes existence of treatment specific counterfactual variables so that the observed data augmented by the counterfactual data will satisfy a consistency and a randomization assumption. Gill and Robins [2001] show that the consistency and randomization assumptions do not add any restrictions to the observed data distribution. In particular, they provide a construction of counterfactuals as a function of the observed data distribution. In this paper we provide a construction of counterfactuals as a function of the observed data itself. Our construction provides a new statistical tool for estimation of counterfactual distributions. Robins [1987b] shows that the …

Topological Phase Transitions In Periodically Modulated Quantized Metal Films, A. E. Meyerovich, Dongmin Chen
Topological Phase Transitions In Periodically Modulated Quantized Metal Films, A. E. Meyerovich, Dongmin Chen
Physics Faculty Publications
Electronic topological phase transitions (ETT) are predicted for any quantized metal films with a periodically modulated boundary commensurate with the bulk lattice. While the thickness of the film at which ETT occurs is determined almost exclusively by the period of the boundary modulation, the value of the band gaps and the amplitude of the singularities are proportional to the amplitude of the corrugation. The gaps in the energy spectrum lead to a strong anisotropy of conductivity. These novel quantum effects can be detected in measurements of the density of states and conductivity as a function of the film thickness. Experiments …
