Seat Belt Use Compliance In Kansas, Deogratias Eustace, Teresa M. C. Bartel Oct 2002

Seat Belt Use Compliance In Kansas, Deogratias Eustace, Teresa M. C. Bartel

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Faculty Publications

Passenger vehicle occupant restraints are regarded as the easiest and the most effective way of reducing the number of highway fatalities. Strong vehicle occupant protection enforcement laws are regarded as the most effective way to increase seat belt use. The increase in restraint use in the United States and other countries has been largely attributed to mandatory seat belt use legislation. Many fatalities and injuries in motor vehicle crashes could be avoided if more passengers used their seat belts. Studies have shown that primary laws have been more effective in seat belt use compliance than secondary laws. Also, legislation has …

Adiabatic Invariance With First Integrals Of Motion, Artur D. Adib Oct 2002

Adiabatic Invariance With First Integrals Of Motion, Artur D. Adib

Dartmouth Scholarship

The construction of a microthermodynamic formalism for isolated systems based on the concept of adiabatic invariance is an old but seldom appreciated effort in the literature, dating back at least to P. Hertz [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 33, 225 (1910)]. An apparently independent extension of such formalism for systems bearing additional first integrals of motion was recently proposed by Hans H. Rugh [Phys. Rev. E 64, 055101 (2001)], establishing the concept of adiabatic invariance even in such singular cases. After some remarks in connection with the formalism pioneered by Hertz, it will be suggested that such an extension can …

Perceptions Of Preservice Elementary Teachers On Multicultural Issues, Mary Alice Barksdale, Janet Richards, Peter Fisher, Marge Wuthrick, Jean Hammons, Dana Grisham, Heather Richmond Oct 2002

Perceptions Of Preservice Elementary Teachers On Multicultural Issues, Mary Alice Barksdale, Janet Richards, Peter Fisher, Marge Wuthrick, Jean Hammons, Dana Grisham, Heather Richmond

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This paper reports an exploratory study of preservice teachers' knowledge of multicultural education and preparedness for literacy instruction with diverse populations. We conducted the study across a variety of college and university contexts. Results showed that preservice teachers did not feel well prepared to teach children of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. We also found evidence that these preservice teachers had not developed a strong knowledge base about multicultural education, despite the fact that they had all been introduced to multicultural topics in their teacher education coursework. This study demonstrates that there is a need for examination of current methods …

High-Energy Lasers: Technical, Operational, And Policy Issues, Elihu Zimet Oct 2002

High-Energy Lasers: Technical, Operational, And Policy Issues, Elihu Zimet

Defense Horizons

After more than 30 years of technology development and many billions of dollars in investment, the Department of Defense is poised to operationally deploy its first high-energy laser (HEL) weapon system, the airborne laser. The unique attributes of an HEL—speed-of-light delivery of energy, surgical precision, variable lethality, and multiple target engagement—could significantly alter the balance between offensive and defensive weapons or provide options for nonlethal weapons. On the other hand, the long development period and large outlay of funding to date suggest the significant technical, operational, and policy challenges of fielding such systems.

This paper considers the unique and promising …

Benthic Biological Monitoring Program Of The Elizabeth River Watershed (2001) With A Study Of Paradise Creek, Daniel M. Dauer Oct 2002

Benthic Biological Monitoring Program Of The Elizabeth River Watershed (2001) With A Study Of Paradise Creek, Daniel M. Dauer

Elizabeth River Reports

Executive Summary

A study of the macrobenthic communities of the Elizabeth River watershed was initiated in summer 1999. This report presents the data from the third year of sampling in 2001. The three objectives of the Benthic Biological Monitoring Program of the Elizabeth River watershed are: (1) To characterize the health of the tidal waters of the Elizabeth River watershed as indicated by the structure of the benthic communities. ( 2) To conduct trend analyses on long-term data at 14 fixed-point stations to relate temporal trends in the benthic communities to changes in water and/or sediment quality. Trend analyses will …

Patients' Perspective On Factors Affecting Utilization Of Primary Health Care Centers In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Abdalla A. Saeed, Badreldin A. Mohamed

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess factors which the patients think can encourage, discourage or have no effect on utilization of Primary Health Care Centers (PHCCs) in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Patients (n=540) attending the selected PHCCs in Riyadh were asked regarding their views on 21 (factors) items and whether they can encourage, discourage or has no effect on utilization of PHCCs services. Eight PHCCs were randomly selected according to the geographical location, 2 from each geographical zone. Seventy-five subjects were selected systematically, every 10th Saudi aged 15 years and above who visited the selected …

Critical Pedagogy As Organizational Praxis: Challenging The Demise Of Civil Society In A Time Of Permanent War, Peter Mclaren, Nathalia E. Jaramillo Oct 2002

Critical Pedagogy As Organizational Praxis: Challenging The Demise Of Civil Society In A Time Of Permanent War, Peter Mclaren, Nathalia E. Jaramillo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The writers criticize the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the ensuing military and political occupation of the country. They suggest a link between aggressive U.S. military posture and neoliberal globalization and contend that the current situation in Iraq is a metaphor for globalized capitalism across the world. The writers then consider issues surrounding the politics of organization in the search for a socialist alternative to free market capitalism and discuss how critical educators can reinvigorate the civil societarian left at a time when elites are less accountable to civil society than ever before.

Eye Tracking Observers During Color Image Evaluation Tasks, Jason Babcock Oct 2002

Eye Tracking Observers During Color Image Evaluation Tasks, Jason Babcock

Theses

This thesis investigated eye movement behavior of subjects during image-quality evaluation and chromatic adaptation tasks. Specifically, the objectives focused on learning where people center their attention during color preference judgments, examining the differences between paired comparison, rank order, and graphical rating tasks, and determining what strategies are adopted when selecting or adjusting achromatic regions on a soft-copy display. In judging the most preferred image, measures of fixation duration showed that observers spend about 4 seconds per image in the rank order task, 1.8 seconds per image in the paired comparison task, and 3.5 seconds per image in the graphical rating …
