Dynamic Effects Of Currency Depreciation On Stock Market Returns During The Asian Financial Crisis, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller Oct 2002

Dynamic Effects Of Currency Depreciation On Stock Market Returns During The Asian Financial Crisis, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

The current international integration of financial markets provides a channel for currency depreciation to affect stock prices. Moreover, the recent financial crisis in Asia with its accompanying exchange rate volatility affords a case study to examine that channel. This paper applies a bivariate GARCH-M model of the reduced form of stock market returns to investigate empirically the effects of daily currency depreciation on stock market returns for five newly emerging East Asian stock markets during the Asian financial crisis. The evidence shows that the conditional variances of stock market returns and depreciation rates exhibit time-varying characteristics for all countries. Domestic …

Ottoman Tax Registers (Tahrir Defterleri), Metin M. Cosgel Oct 2002

Ottoman Tax Registers (Tahrir Defterleri), Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

The Ottoman government obtained current information on the empire's sources of revenue through periodic registers called tahrir defterleri. These documents include detailed information on tax-paying subjects and taxable resources, making it possible to study the economic and social history of the Middle East and Eastern Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Although the use of these documents have been typically limited to the construction of local histories, adopting a more optimistic attitude toward their potential and using appropriate sampling procedures can greatly increase their contribution to historical scholarship. They can be used in comprehensive quantitative studies and in addressing …

Empirical Evidence And Malpractice Litigation, Philip G. Peters Jr. Oct 2002

Empirical Evidence And Malpractice Litigation, Philip G. Peters Jr.

Faculty Publications

Critics of medical malpractice litigation believe that expert testimony is often anecdotal and biased. To remedy this problem, several have recently suggested that attorneys should provide and courts should seek reliable empirical evidence of actual clinical norms. Their suggestion should be welcomed. If our expectations are realistic and the design pitfalls are avoided, greater use of use of empirical research will improve the fairness of malpractice adjudication. At least in theory, it could be useful in both the "easy" cases (where it reveals that a consensus standard of care exists) and also some of the harder cases (where clinical practices …

From Efficient Market Theory To Behavioral Finance, Robert J. Shiller Oct 2002

From Efficient Market Theory To Behavioral Finance, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The efficient markets theory reached the height of its dominance in academic circles around the 1970s. Faith in this theory was eroded by a succession of discoveries of anomalies, many in the 1980s, and of evidence of excess volatility of returns. Finance literature in this decade and after suggests a more nuanced view of the value of the efficient markets theory, and, starting in the 1990s, a blossoming of research on behavioral finance. Some important developments in the 1990s and recently include feedback theories, models of the interaction of smart money with ordinary investors, and evidence on obstacles to smart …

One Simple Test Of Samuelson's Dictum For The Stock Market, Jeeman Jung, Robert J. Shiller Oct 2002

One Simple Test Of Samuelson's Dictum For The Stock Market, Jeeman Jung, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Samuelson (1998) offered the dictum that the stock market is “micro efficient” but “macro inefficient.” That is, the efficient markets hypothesis works much better for individual stocks than it does for the aggregate stock market. In this paper, we present one simple test, based both on regressions and on a simple scatter diagram that vividly illustrates that there is some truth to Samuelson’s dictum. The data comprise all U.S. firms on the CRSP tape that have survived since 1926.

Numeric Issues In Test Software Correctness, Robert G. Hayes, Gary B. Hughes, Phillip M. Dorin, Raymond J. Toal

Statistics

Test system designers are comfortable with the concepts of precision and accuracy with regard to measurements achieved with modern instrumentation. In a well-designed test system, great care is taken to ensure accurate measurements, with rigorous attention to instrument specifications and calibration. However, measurement values are subjected to representation and manipulation as limited precision floating-point numbers by test software. This paper investigates some of the issues related to floating point representation of measurement values, as well as the consequences of algorithm selection. To illustrate, we consider the test case of standard deviation calculations as used in the testing of infrared focal …

Direct Estimation Of Aboveground Forest Productivity Through Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Canopy Nitrogen, Marie-Louise Smith, Scott V. Ollinger, Mary E. Martin, John D. Aber, Richard A. Hallett, Christine L. Goodale Oct 2002

Direct Estimation Of Aboveground Forest Productivity Through Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Canopy Nitrogen, Marie-Louise Smith, Scott V. Ollinger, Mary E. Martin, John D. Aber, Richard A. Hallett, Christine L. Goodale

Faculty Publications

The concentration of nitrogen in foliage has been related to rates of net photosynthesis across a wide range of plant species and functional groups and thus represents a simple and biologically meaningful link between terrestrial cycles of carbon and nitrogen. Although foliar N is used by ecosystem models to predict rates of leaf‐level photosynthesis, it has rarely been examined as a direct scalar to stand‐level carbon gain. Establishment of such relationships would greatly simplify the nature of forest C and N linkages, enhancing our ability to derive estimates of forest productivity at landscape to regional scales. Here, we report on …

The observation of a small change in spectral slope, or 'knee' in the fluxes of cosmic rays near energies 1015 eV has caused much speculation since its discovery over 40 years ago. The origin of this feature remains unknown. A small workshop to review some modern experimental measurements of this region was held at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, USA in June 2000. This paper summarizes the results presented at this workshop and the discussion of their interpretation in the context of hadronic models of atmospheric air showers. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Heca, A Member Of A Class Of Adhesins Produced By Diverse Pathogenic Bacteria, Contributes To The Attachment, Aggregation, Epidermal Cell Killing, And Virulence Phenotypes Of Erwinia Chrysanthemi Ec16 On Nicotiana Clevelandii Seedlings, Clemencia M. Rojas, Jong Hyun Ham, Wen Ling Deng, Jeff J. Doyle, Alan Collmer

Faculty Publications

Erwinia chrysanthemi is representative of a broad class of bacterial pathogens that are capable of inducing necrosis in plants. The E. chrysanthemi EC16 hecA gene predicts a 3,850-aa member of the Bordetella pertussis filamentous hemagglutinin family of adhesins. A hecA::Tn7 mutant was reduced in virulence on Nicotiana clevelandii seedlings after inoculation without wounding. Epifluorescence and confocal laser-scanning microscopy observations of hecA and wild-type cells expressing the green fluorescent protein revealed that the mutant is reduced in its ability to attach and then form aggregates on leaves and to cause an aggregate-associated killing of epidermal cells. Cell killing also depended on …

Training And Performance Self-Efficacy, Affect, And Performance In Wheelchair Road Racers, Jeffrey J. Martin

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

In the current study, social cognitive theory was examined with athletes with disabilities. More specifically, hierarchical and self-regulatory performance self-efficacy, self-regulatory training self-efficacy, outcome confidence, and affect were examined with wheelchair road racers (N = 51). In accordance with social cognitive theory, moderate to strong significant relationships among 3 types of self-efficacy and outcome confidence were found (rs = .41 - .78). All forms of self-efficacy and positive affect (rs = .39 - .56) were also related providing additional support to social cognitive theory and the important relationships among training and performance related efficacy and affect in …
