Apparent Tricritical Behavior At A Nearly Second-Order Nematic-Isotropic Phase Transition Of A Cyclic Liquid Crystalline Trimer, Ishtiaque M. Syed, Virgil Percec, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt
Faculty Scholarship
An investigation on the cyclic liquid crystalline trimer TPB-(c)9(3) was performed. The optical retardation and Fréedericksz techniques within a few tens of millikelvins of the superheating limit of the nearly second-order nematic isotropic phase transition were used for the investigation purpose. It was found that both the Fréedericksz bend threshold voltage and optical retardation were in good agreement with tricritical behaviour for the transition.

Temperature and wind data obtained from a Na wind/temperature lidar operated by the University of Illinois group during the Airborne Lidar and Observations of the Hawaiian Airglow (ALOHA-93) Campaign, previously analyzed by Huang et al. [1998] using an isothermal Brunt-Va¨isa¨la¨ frequency, have been reexamined to include temperature gradients in the calculation of the Richardson number. In the previous analysis using the isothermal Brunt-Va¨isa¨la¨ frequency the existence of convective instability could not be assessed. New analysis shows that the nonisothermal Richardson number preserves some features found previously, with some striking differences noticable at times between 0900 and 1030 UT. The nonisothermal …

Beginning in September of 2000, there was an increase in Palestinian terrorist activity against the Jewish community in Judea and Samaria, the Gaza Strip, and within Israel itself. Hundreds were killed and wounded. In reaction, the army initiated military activities. Hundreds of Palestinians were killed and wounded. Terrorist activity intensified in the beginning of 2002. In March of that year there was an increase of Palestinian terrorist activity. Approximately one hundred and twenty Israeli civilians were killed and hundreds were wounded. In response to the terrorist activity, the government decided, on 29.03.2002, to carry out a large-scale military operation. The …

Photoreflectance Spectroscopy Of Strained (In)Gaasn/Gaas Multiple Quantum Wells, J. B. Heroux, Xiaodong Yang, W. I. Wang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effect of a variation of the indium and nitrogen concentrations in Inᵪ Ga1-x As1-y Ny /GaAs multiquantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy is studied systematically by room temperature photoreflectance spectroscopy. The band gap redshift caused by a nitrogen fraction of 1.5% decreases by as much as 30% as the indium fraction increases from 0% to 20%. A moderate increase of electron effective mass (Δmₑ ~ 0.03m₀) is found in all samples containing nitrogen (y ≳ 1%). In compressively strained quantum wells, the energy separation between the first confined heavy and light hole energy levels decreases …

The invention involves methods and compositions useful in delivering micronutrients to cells. By formulating the micronutrient in the form of an ester that is convertible to the active form of the micronutrient, one can combine it with a co-ester that inhibits esterases, so that the micronutrient can reach the targeted cells prior to degradation. Both methods and compositions are described.

Facts: This petition was submitted during IDF operations against the terrorist infrastructure in the areas of the Palestinian Authority. (“Operation Defensive Wall.”) Petitioners requested that the IDF be ordered to cease checking and removing the bodies of Palestinians that had been killed during the course of warfare in the Jenin refugee camp. Petitioners also requested that the IDF be ordered not to bury those ascertained to be terrorists in the Jordan valley cemetery. Petitioners request that the tasks of identifying and removing the bodies be the responsibility of medical teams and the Red Cross. Petitioners also request that the families …
