Upgrading And Qualification Of A Turbulent Heat Transfer Test Facility, Olumide Folorunso Odetola Dec 2002

Upgrading And Qualification Of A Turbulent Heat Transfer Test Facility, Olumide Folorunso Odetola

Theses and Dissertations

The Turbulent Heat Transfer Test Facility (THTTF) has been refurbished and the data acquisition system upgraded. The THTTF is now controlled by a LabView 4.1 program which replaces the old program in BASIC. Heat transfer data acquired using this new program is presented as Stanton number distributions. The new data set is compared to previously reported data obtained with this facility and other wellepted published data. This project has successfully qualified the THTTF for zero-pressure gradient, isothermal wall temperature, incompressible boundary-layer flow over smooth flat plates without transpiration. The THTTF is now set to accommodate modifications which will facilitate heat …

Volute And Diffuser Performance Analysis For High Turning Turbine System, Runsong Xu Dec 2002

Volute And Diffuser Performance Analysis For High Turning Turbine System, Runsong Xu

Theses and Dissertations

Test results from a rocket turbine test model, called the Oxidizer Technology Turbine Rig (OTTR), are discussed in this paper. The turbine was designed to support the development of advanced turbines for future liquid rocket engines. It is a highly loaded single stage liquid oxygen pump drive turbine which uses inlet and exit volutes to provide optimum performance in a compact configuration. The system design creates high pressure and temperature gradients as well as high Mach number flow. These factors make it especially difficult to accurately measure the flowfield. Test issues such as probe calibration; probe interference, rake blockage, and …

Growth Of 6h-Sic Homoepitaxy On Substrates Off-Cut Between The [01-10] Planes, James Dennis Vandersand Jr Dec 2002

Growth Of 6h-Sic Homoepitaxy On Substrates Off-Cut Between The [01-10] Planes, James Dennis Vandersand Jr

Theses and Dissertations

The wide band-gap semiconductor silicon carbide has tremendous potential for use in high power, high temperature, and high frequency electronic devices. One of the more important design factors for these devices is the epitaxial layer. It is desirable that this thin film have uniform polytype, thickness, and impurity concentration, as well as be defect free. One method used for SiC to ensure epitaxial layers with homogenous polytype is to cut wafers from a boule that has been tilted towards a specific crystallographic face at a fixed angle (known as ?off cut?). The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the …

Experimental Studies Of The Drag Of An Axisymmetric Submarine Hull, John Lindsley Freudenthal Dec 2002

Experimental Studies Of The Drag Of An Axisymmetric Submarine Hull, John Lindsley Freudenthal

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of these studies was to measure the drag coefficient of a small model submarine to add data to a Reynolds number study. First, a laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) was used to measure the flow characteristics of the Mississippi State University water tunnel. The velocity and turbulence intensity profiles were measured for a range of freestream velocities of 8.6 m/s to 10.7 m/s. Several wake velocity profiles were taken for a model submarine at downstream distances of x/d = 10 to x/d = 28, with a freestream velocity of 8.6 m/s. A formula for the drag coefficient that uses …

A Framework For Automatic Ontology Generation From Autonomous Web Applications, Giovanni Modica Dec 2002

A Framework For Automatic Ontology Generation From Autonomous Web Applications, Giovanni Modica

Theses and Dissertations

Ontologies capture the structure, relationships, semantics and other essential meta information of an application. This thesis describes a framework to automate application interoperability by using dynamically generated ontologies. We propose a set of techniques to extract ontologies from data accessible on the Web in the form of semi-structured HTML pages. Ontologies retrieved from similar applications are matched together to create a general ontology describing the application domain. Information retrieval and graph matching techniques are used to match and measure the usefulness of the ontologies created. Matching algorithms are combined together to produce global ontologies based on local ontologies inherently present …

Reconfiguration In An Optical Multiring Interconnection Network - Masters Thesis, December 2002, Praveen Krishnamurthy Dec 2002

Reconfiguration In An Optical Multiring Interconnection Network - Masters Thesis, December 2002, Praveen Krishnamurthy

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The advent of optical technology that can feasibly support extremely high bandwidth chip-to-chip communication raises a host of architectural questions in the design of digital systems. Terabit per second (and higher) bandwidths have not been previously available at the chip level. In this thesis, we examine the use of this technology in two different scenarios, viz., as the interconnection network in a multiprocessor system and as a switch fabric in network routers. Specifically, we examine the performance gains associated with utilizing the bandwidth reconfiguration capabilities of a system based on this technology.

A Multi-User Network Game For Learning English, Moon Jung Kim Dec 2002

A Multi-User Network Game For Learning English, Moon Jung Kim

Theses

As the era changed, education programs have developed tremendously and there are more people who seek for a new way to study easier. A game is one way to learn new skills; Network games especially can be used most effectively to support the goal of education. I believe that people can gain more knowledge through competitive games than memorizing by them selves. Some might think network games are not needed because there is no need for other people when you can compete with a computer, but There are limitations using just a computer and people feel more competitive when they …

The Morphology Of Nine Radio-Selected Faint Galaxies From Deep Hubble Space Telescope Imaging, Nathan D. Roche, James D. Lowenthal, David C. Koo Dec 2002

The Morphology Of Nine Radio-Selected Faint Galaxies From Deep Hubble Space Telescope Imaging, Nathan D. Roche, James D. Lowenthal, David C. Koo

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 we perform deep I-band imaging of nine radio-selected [F(8.5 GHz) ≥ 14 μJy] faint galaxies from the Roche, Lowenthal & Koo (2002) sample. Two are also observed in V using HST STIS. Six of the galaxies have known redshifts, in the range 0.4 < z < 1.0. Radial intensity profiles indicate that seven are disc galaxies and two are bulge-dominated. Four of the six with redshifts have a high optical surface brightness in comparison with previous studies of disc galaxies at similar redshifts (e.g. Lilly et al. 1998). The HST imaging reveals that two of the nine galaxies are in close interacting pairs and another five show morphological evidence of recent interactions - two are very asymmetric (A ∼ 0.4) and three have large, luminous rings resembling the collisional starburst rings in the Cartwheel galaxy. For the two ring galaxies with redshifts, we measure ring radii of 7.05 and 10.0 h kpc, which suggest post-collision ages 0.1-0.2 Gyr. One has a fainter inner ring, like the original Cartwheel. The remaining two appear to be late-type barred galaxies and relatively undisturbed. Our HST imaging confirms the high incidence of interactions and dynamical disturbance in faint radio-selected galaxies, as reported by Windhorst et al. and Serjeant et al., for example. In the great majority of these galaxies the high radio luminosities are probably the result of interaction-triggered starbursts. However, one interacting galaxy is a very radio-luminous giant elliptical, with red V - I colours, a normal surface brightness and no evidence of star-forming regions, so its radio source is probably an obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). The mixture of observed morphologies suggests that enhanced radio luminosities often persist to a late stage of interaction, i.e. at least ∼0.2 Gyr after the perigalactic encounter. asym 50 -1

Blackbirds And Corn In Ohio, Richard A. Dolbeer Dec 2002

Blackbirds And Corn In Ohio, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Damage to corn by blackbirds (Icteridae) has been an economic problem throughout historical times in North America. Ohio, with the highest nesting season population density of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in North America and large acreages of corn, has been a key State in this conflict. Surveys of damage from 1968 to 1979 revealed that blackbirds annually destroyed less than 1% of the corn crops in Ohio, a 4- to 6-million dollar loss at 1979 prices. This total dollar loss is somewhat misleading because of the uneven distribution of damage among fields. Over 97% of the cornfields in Ohio receive …

Statistics Of The Contact Network In Frictional And Frictionless Granular Packings, Leo Silbert, Gary S. Grest, James W. Landry Dec 2002

Statistics Of The Contact Network In Frictional And Frictionless Granular Packings, Leo Silbert, Gary S. Grest, James W. Landry

Publications

Simulated granular packings with different particle friction coefficient μ are examined. The distribution of the particle-particle and particle-wall normal and tangential contact forces P(f) are computed and compared with existing experimental data. Here f≡F/F̅ is the contact force F normalized by the average value F̅ . P(f) exhibits exponential-like decay at large forces, a plateau/peak near f=1, with additional features at forces smaller than the average that depend on μ. Additional information beyond the one-point force distribution functions is provided in the form of the force-force spatial distribution function and the contact point radial distribution function. These quantities indicate that …
