Dealing With Non-Performing Loans Of Banks, Ishrat Husain Dr. Oct 2002

Dealing With Non-Performing Loans Of Banks, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

A lot of confusion and misunderstanding has been created by several commentators on the issue of non-performing loans (NPLs) of banking system. They take the absolute amount of such loans at the current point of time and compare it with the quantum of such loans in October 1999 and make a hue and cry that the situation has deteriorated because the quantum of NPLs has gone up. Such a simplistic approach creates doubts in the minds of common people about the commitment of the government and the State Bank of Pakistan towards recovery of these loans and distorts the true …

Fixed Point And Two-Cycles Of The Discrete Logarithm, Joshua Holden Oct 2002

Fixed Point And Two-Cycles Of The Discrete Logarithm, Joshua Holden

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We explore some questions related to one of Brizolis: does every prime p have a pair (g, h) such that h is a fixed point for the discrete logarithm with base g? We extend this question to ask about not only fixed points but also two-cycles. Campbell and Pomerance have not only answered the fixed point question for sufficiently large p but have also rigorously estimated the number of such pairs given certain conditions on g and h. We attempt to give heuristics for similar estimates given other conditions on g and h and also in the case …

Union grievance filed October 11, 2001, alleging breach of Articles 6.01(b) and 10.03 of the Collective Agreement between the Employer and the Union in effect from January 1, 2001 to July 31, 2004, which the parties agreed is the relevant Collective Agreement for purposes of this matter, in that the Employer had violated Articles 6.01(b) and 10.03 and "has posted a number of jobs that do not specify the days of the week on which the work is to be carried out". At the hearing the Union sought a declaration of what it alleged was the proper interpretation of Article …

Production, Outflow, Velocity, And Radial Distribution Of H2o And Oh In The Coma Of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) From Wide-Field Imaging Of Oh, Walter M. Harris, Frank Scherb, Edwin Mierkiewicz, Ronald Oliversen, Jeffrey Morgenthaler Oct 2002

Production, Outflow, Velocity, And Radial Distribution Of H2o And Oh In The Coma Of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) From Wide-Field Imaging Of Oh, Walter M. Harris, Frank Scherb, Edwin Mierkiewicz, Ronald Oliversen, Jeffrey Morgenthaler

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

Observations of OH are a useful proxy of the water production rate (Q H2O) and outflow velocity (VH2O) in comets. From wide-field images taken on 1997 March 28 and April 8 that capture the entire scale length of the OH coma of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), we obtain Q OH from the model-independent method of aperture summation and Q H2O from the OH photochemical branching ratio, BROH. Using an adaptive ring summation algorithm, we extract the radial brightness distribution of OH 0-0 band emission out to cometocentric distances of up to 10 to the sixth power km, both as azimuthal …

Corrective Action And School Choice In Nyc: An Analysis Of District Funding Applications, Doug Hamman, E. Allen Schenck Oct 2002

Corrective Action And School Choice In Nyc: An Analysis Of District Funding Applications, Doug Hamman, E. Allen Schenck

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Districts play a critical role in reforming schools. In January 2000, NYC community school districts applied for Title I, IASA, funding to carry out corrective actions against historically low-performing schools. Our purpose was to examine (a) how districts planned to take corrective action to address problems that cause low performance; and (b) the extent to which school choice could be implemented in those districts which were applying for corrective action funding. ...

Crystalline Order On A Sphere And The Generalized Thomson Problem, Mark Bowick, Angelo Cacciuto, David R. Nelson, A. Travesset Oct 2002

Crystalline Order On A Sphere And The Generalized Thomson Problem, Mark Bowick, Angelo Cacciuto, David R. Nelson, A. Travesset

Physics - All Scholarship

We attack generalized Thomson problems with a continuum formalism which exploits a universal long range interaction between defects depending on the Young modulus of the underlying lattice. Our predictions for the ground state energy agree with simulations of long range power law interactions of the form 1/r^{gamma} (0 < gamma < 2) to four significant digits. The regime of grain boundaries is studied in the context of tilted crystalline order and the generality of our approach is illustrated with new results for square tilings on the sphere.

Plateau Effects In The Spectra Of Electrons Scattered From Atoms In A Strong Laser Field, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace, A. V. Flegel, M. V. Frolov Oct 2002

Plateau Effects In The Spectra Of Electrons Scattered From Atoms In A Strong Laser Field, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace, A. V. Flegel, M. V. Frolov

Anthony F. Starace Publications

An exact quantum solution of the problem of electron scattering from a short-range potential in the presence of a strong elliptically polarized laser field is obtained. The differential scattering cross section as a function of the number of absorbed (or emitted) photons exhibits a plateau caused by the rescattering of electrons from the scattering center. Numerical results for a linearly polarized laser field are presented, and it is shown that the plateau boundaries agree well with classical estimates.

Assessment Of A Socio-Constructivist Model For Teacher Training: A Case Study, Luiz Antonio Joia Oct 2002

Assessment Of A Socio-Constructivist Model For Teacher Training: A Case Study, Luiz Antonio Joia

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article assesses a socio-constructivist model for training K-12 teachers in Brazil, in the use of Informatics in education. The method applied combines both face-to-face exchanges and a WEB-based distance approach made possible by Internet technology. The characteristics of such training and its main objectives are analyzed according to the collected data presented. ...

Histone Methyltransferase Activity Of A Drosophila Polycomb Group Repressor Complex, Jürg Müller, Craig M. Hart, Nicole J. Francis, Marcus L. Vargas, Aditya Sengupta, Brigitte Wild, Ellen L. Miller, Michael B. O'Connor, Robert E. Kingston, Jeffrey A. Simon

Faculty Publications

Polycomb group (PcG) proteins maintain transcriptional repression during development, likely by creating repressive chromatin states. The Extra Sex Combs (ESC) and Enhancer of Zeste [E(Z)] proteins are partners in an essential PcG complex, but its full composition and biochemical activities are not known. A SET domain in E(Z) suggests this complex might methylate histones. We purified an ESC-E(Z) complex from Drosophila embryos and found four major subunits: ESC, E(Z), NURF-55, and the PcG repressor, SU(Z)12. A recombinant complex reconstituted from these four subunits methylates lysine-27 of histone H3. Mutations in the E(Z) SET domain disrupt methyltransferase activity in vitro and …
