Derivative Spectrophotometric Determination Of Caffeine In Some Beverages, Güzi̇n Alpdoğan, Kadi̇r Karabi̇na, Sidika Sungur

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Caffeine content was determined in cola, coffee and tea by second and third order derivative spectrophotometry without using any separation or background correction technique and reagent. The method is based on the measurement of the distances between two extremum values (peak to peak amplitudes) in the second order (cola) and third order (coffee and tea) derivative spectra of the sample solution. Calibration curves were constructed for the 2.0-10.0 \mu g ml^{-1}concentration range. As a reference method, reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic procedure was developed. Commercially available beverages were analyzed by the two methods and the results were statistically compared …

The biosorption of Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions on the alginate beads and both immobilized live and heat inactivated fungal mycelia of Pleurotus sapidus} was studied from aqueous solutions in the concentration range of 30-500 mg L^{ - 1}. The biosorption of Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions by the alginate and both live and heat inactivated immobilized preparations increased as the initial concentration of the ions increased in the medium. Maximum biosorption capacity for immobilized live and heat inactivated fungal mycelia of …

Arctic Ice Export Events And Their Potential Impact On Global Climate During The Late Pleistocene, Dennis A. Darby, Jens F. Bischof, Robert F. Spielhagen, Steven A. Marshall, Stephen W. Herman Jan 2002

Arctic Ice Export Events And Their Potential Impact On Global Climate During The Late Pleistocene, Dennis A. Darby, Jens F. Bischof, Robert F. Spielhagen, Steven A. Marshall, Stephen W. Herman

OES Faculty Publications

Ice sheets in the North American Arctic and, to a lesser extent, those in northern Eurasia calved large quantities of icebergs that drifted through Fram Strait into the Greenland Sea several times during the late Pleistocene. These icebergs deposited Fe oxide grains (45-250 mum) and coarse lithic clasts >250 mum matched to specific circum-Arctic sources. Four massive Arctic iceberg export events are identified from the Laurentide and the Innuitian ice sheets, between 14 and 34 ka (calendar years) in a sediment core from Fram Strait. These relatively short duration (<1-4 kyr) events contain 3-5 times the background levels of Fe oxide grains. They began suddenly, as indicated by a steep rise in the number of grains matched to an ice sheet source, suggesting rapid purges of ice through Fram Strait, due perhaps to collapse of ice sheets. The larger events from the northwestern Laurentide ice sheet are preceded by events from the Innuitian ice sheet. Despite the chronological uncertainties, the Arctic export events appear to occur prior to Heinrich events.

Peptide Hydrolysis, Amino Acid Oxidation, And Nitrogen Uptake In Communities Seasonally Dominated By Aureococcus Anophagefferens, Margaret R. Mulholland, Christopher J. Gobler, Cindy Lee Jan 2002

Peptide Hydrolysis, Amino Acid Oxidation, And Nitrogen Uptake In Communities Seasonally Dominated By Aureococcus Anophagefferens, Margaret R. Mulholland, Christopher J. Gobler, Cindy Lee

OES Faculty Publications

Elevated levels of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) are among the factors implicated in the initiation of algal blooms. However, the degree to which phytoplankton augment their autotrophic metabolism with heterotrophic uptake of organic carbon that is associated with DON is unknown. We evaluated the relative importance of peptide hydrolysis, amino acid oxidation, and amino acid uptake over a seasonal cycle in an embayment on Long Island, New York, that had high concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and a bloom of the brown tide pelagophyte, Aureococcus anophagefferens. Amino acids were a significant component (up …

Length-At-Age In Juvenile Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus Eleginoides), J. Ashford, C. Jones, S. Bobko, I. Everson Jan 2002

Length-At-Age In Juvenile Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus Eleginoides), J. Ashford, C. Jones, S. Bobko, I. Everson

OES Faculty Publications

We used the otoliths from a sample of Dissostichus eleginoides pre-recruits, whose length density was distinctly polymodal, to see whether ages estimated by reading otoliths were congruent with the length modes observed. Length densities by age were compared graphically with the overall length density observed. Additionally, ages were predicted for each fish based on length, and compared with ages estimated from reading otoliths in a goodness-of-fit test. The majority of the otoliths (83.6%) were estimated to be from fish 1+ or 2+ years old, with mean total lengths of 32.5 cm and 41.3 cm respectively. No difference was found between …

Simultaneous Multithreading: Operating System Perspective, Vyacheslav Rubinfine Jan 2002

Simultaneous Multithreading: Operating System Perspective, Vyacheslav Rubinfine

Theses

Developing CPU architecture is a very complicated, iterative process that requires significant time and money investments. The motivation for this work is to find ways to decreases the amount of time and money needed for the development of hardware architectures. The main problem is that it is very difficult to determine the performance of the architecture, since it is impossible to take any performance measurements untill upon completion of the development process. Consecutively, it is impossible to improve the performance of the product or to predict the influence of different parts of the architecture on the architecture's overall performance. Another …

Anatomy Of A Coupling Query In A Web Warehouse, Sourav S. Bhowmick, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To populate a data warehouse specifically designed for Web data, i.e. web warehouse, it is imperative to harness relevant documents from the Web. In this paper, we describe a query mechanism called coupling query to glean relevant Web data in the context of our web warehousing system called Warehouse Of Web Data (WHOWEDA). Coupling query may be used for querying both HTML and XML documents. Some of the important features of our query mechanism are ability to query metadata, content, internal and external (hyperlink) structure of Web documents based on partial knowledge, ability to express constraints on tag attributes and …

Georgia High School Principals' Perceptions Of Inclusion, James Timothy Yarborough Jan 2002

Georgia High School Principals' Perceptions Of Inclusion, James Timothy Yarborough

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

While considerable research has been conducted concerning the perceptions of teachers regarding the practice of inclusion, there is little corresponding research about the perceptions of principals towards inclusion. Also, much ofthe existing research is contradictory. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide educational policymakers with data regarding inclusion. Since principals are responsible for designing and instituting inclusion programs at the school level, their current and prevailing perceptions regarding inclusion were the missing pieces of the information puzzle.

In an attempt to fill this void, the researcher created a survey with quantitative and qualitative components. The survey was distributed …

Bulloch County Historical Society Publications

A Master’s thesis written by Malinda Maynor on Croatan, or Lumbee, Indians in Bulloch County and the ways in which they maintained their identity after leaving Robeson County, North Carolina.

Abstract:

In 1890, Croatan Indian men and women, now called Lumbees, began leaving Robeson County, North Carolina to work in turpentine camps in Bulloch County, Georgia. There a Croatan settlement emerged that re-created many features of their North Carolina home. In this period, Georgia, and the South as a whole, legally encoded racial segregation and threatened to force Bulloch County Croatans into a black or white identity. But rather than …

An Empirical Analysis Of Takeover Predictions In The Uk: Application Of Artificial Neural Networks And Logistic Regression, Asim Yuzbasioglu

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study undertakes an empirical analysis of takeover predictions in the UK. The objectives of this research are twofold. First, whether it is possible to predict or identity takeover targets before they receive any takeover bid. Second, to test whether it is possible to improve prediction outcome by extending firm specific characteristics such as corporate governance variables as well as employing a different technique that has started becoming an established analytical tool by its extensive application in corporate finance field. In order to test the first objective, Logistic Regression (LR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been applied as modelling …

Traditional And Nontraditional Foster Parenting, Angela M. Baranzelli-Yoder Jan 2002

Traditional And Nontraditional Foster Parenting, Angela M. Baranzelli-Yoder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Foster parents in nontraditional foster care programs receive more extensive, ongoing training and support than foster parents in traditional foster care programs. This study examined whether differences exist in the levels of perceived parenting stress, satisfaction, and efficacy among traditional and nontraditional foster parents. Twenty-four foster parents completed the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the Parenting Sense of Competence scale (PSOC). Nontraditional foster parents reported higher levels of overall parenting stress and lower levels of foster parent role satisfaction than did traditional foster parents. However, response profiles indicated that nontraditional foster parents had children with more emotional and behavioral problems …

A Model-Based Definition Of The Generic Remanufacturing Business Process, Winifred Ijomah Jan 2002

A Model-Based Definition Of The Generic Remanufacturing Business Process, Winifred Ijomah

Plymouth Business School Theses

Remanufacturing is a process of bringing used products to a "like-new" functional state by rebuilding and replacing their component parts. The practice has a low profile in world economies, however, studies indicate that it obtains cost savings in the region of 20% to 80%, as well as quality similar to that of an equivalent "new" product. In fact, in excess of 73,000 firms are engaged in some sort of remanufacturing in the United States alone. The key remanufacturing issues are the ambiguity in its definition and the scarcity of its analytic models. The objective of the research was to address …

Making A Business Case For Integrating Multidimensional Sustainability In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Thea Jung Jan 2002

Making A Business Case For Integrating Multidimensional Sustainability In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Thea Jung

Theses

To grow their bottom lines, companies invest in business value drivers. This thesis examined whether multidimensional sustainability performance could be one of those drivers in the pharmaceutical industry. There are currently very few (if any) mandatory requirements for integrating multidimensional sustainability. Nor are there standardized methods of integrating, measuring, or communicating multidimensional sustainability. This thesis reviewed, compared, and contrasted (also known as benchmarking) voluntary sustainability initiatives and pharmaceutical company sustainability initiatives. The results were as follows: 1) the concept of multidimensional sustainability is generally understood; 2) integrating multidimensional sustainability is the morally and ethically correct action for pharmaceutical companies to …

A Common Private Law For Europe, Alan Watson Jan 2002

A Common Private Law For Europe, Alan Watson

Scholarly Works

A satisfactory private law for Europe is not primarily to be sought for in the most common solutions, themselves the result of borrowing. Nor in established rules, themselves the result of longevity, and lack of governmental incentive in innovating. Nor should it be sought in intermediate positions of various mixed systems, themselves the results of the features just above described. Rather it is to be found in the need for authority. This means that a common law for Europe requires the acceptance of a uniform system of adjudicating differences within a standard framework of the necessary sources of law. Authority …

Sources Of Inter-State Alignments: Internal Threats And Economic Dependence In The Former Soviet Union, Eric A. Miller Jan 2002

Sources Of Inter-State Alignments: Internal Threats And Economic Dependence In The Former Soviet Union, Eric A. Miller

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation develops a framework for understanding the alignment patterns of states of the former Soviet Union (FSU) vis-à-vis Russia. The framework challenges traditional alignment theories, such as balance of power and balance of threat theories, and suggests that these theories provide less accurate predictions of alignment behavior in the FSU than the present framework because of a variety of situational and contextual factors. In particular, the present framework highlights the impact of two variables on alignment patterns, (1) the internal political threats to leaders, and (2) the economic dependence on Russia. These two variables produce a four-outcome model, presented …

The Challenge Of Policing Immigrant Communities, Benjamin J. Goold Jan 2002

The Challenge Of Policing Immigrant Communities, Benjamin J. Goold

All Faculty Publications

Providing effective policing for immigrant communities is one of the greatest challenges facing law enforcement agencies in the United States today. Despite the fact that police departments across the country have worked hard to improve their relations with immigrant communities in recent years, research suggests that many immigrants continue to encounter considerable difficulties in their dealings with the police and the criminal justice system in general. Language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of familiarity with the US legal system, are all factors that can prevent immigrants from gaining access to justice or taking advantage of important criminal justice services. …

Preparing For The Clothed Public Square: Teaching About Religion, Civic Education, And The Constitution, Jay D. Wexler Jan 2002

Preparing For The Clothed Public Square: Teaching About Religion, Civic Education, And The Constitution, Jay D. Wexler

Faculty Scholarship

Although law and religion scholars have long argued about whether American culture marginalizes religious belief, many important indicators suggest that religion indeed plays a prominent role in contemporary American life. America is an extremely religious nation. Polls consistently show that about ninety percent of Americans continue to believe in God, and both church attendance and membership remain at high levels. This religiosity, moreover, spills out into the public square. A great many Americans rely on religious reasons when thinking and talking about public issues. Ninety percent of the members of Congress, by one report, consult their religious beliefs when voting …

Prey Resource Utilization By Coexistent Hydromedusae From Friday Harbor, Washington, Usa, John H. Costello, Sean Colin Jan 2002

Prey Resource Utilization By Coexistent Hydromedusae From Friday Harbor, Washington, Usa, John H. Costello, Sean Colin

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Prey selection patterns were quantified for a sympatric group of hydromedusae from Friday Harbor, WA. Selection patterns varied between species, but were largely replicable between sample dates and resembled dietary patterns found in similar studies from neighboring regions. Ambush-foraging medusae (Aglantha digitale, Sarsia tubulosa, and Proboscidactyla flavicirrata) fed primarily on crustacean and ciliated prey but the dietary niches of these hydromedusan species centered on different fractions of the available plankton. Consequently, little dietary overlap occurred between the ambush foraging hydromedusae. In contrast, the dietary niches of cruising predators (Aequorea victoria, Mitrocoma cellularia, and …

Mechanical Response Of Nets Of Graphical Objects, Rakesh Kumar Bajaj Jan 2002

Mechanical Response Of Nets Of Graphical Objects, Rakesh Kumar Bajaj

Masters Theses

"This research produces networks of graphical objects that respond to human manipulation in a fashion that would be deemed physically reasonable. That is, a graphical network is given a mechanics-like behavior in the presence of the human interaction. In this approach, nonlinear models replace commonly used linear models to mimic physical reality better. Software solutions are provided via a class library useful for such interactive visual modeling"--Abstract, page iii.

Starting Over: A Tentative Theory Exploring The Effects Of Past Relationships On Postbereavement Remarried Couples, Andrew Scott Brimhall, Michelle Engblom-Deglmann

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Using grounded theory methodology 24 participants were asked to discuss how the death of a previous spouse, either theirs or their partner’s, was currently affecting their second marriage. Participants were interviewed individually and as a couple. The central category was memories of the deceased spouse. Six additional categories emerged from the data: past spouse on pedestal, current/past comparison, insecurity of current spouse, curiosity about past spouse/relationship, partner’s response to curiosity, and impact on the current relationship. Existing literature, auditors, and participant feedback were all used to validate the results. Expanding on a tentative theory (Brimhall, Wampler, & Kimball, 2008), provisional …
