The Early Bronze Age Ceramic Assemblage From Tell Ta'annek, Palestine, Mark S. Ziese Jan 2002

The Early Bronze Age Ceramic Assemblage From Tell Ta'annek, Palestine, Mark S. Ziese

Dissertations

The problem

Greenberg has recently stated that isolating temporal ceramic indicators for the Early Bronze II-III periods is "one of the thorniest issues in the archaeology of Palestine" (2000: 183). Part of theproblem stems from the homogenous nature of ceramic assemblages from Early Bronze Age Palestine; part of it stems from a continued lack of published information. Both of these issues are addressed by this study. Excavations at Tell Ta`annek between 1963 and 1967 unearthed the remains of a multi-period site, including the residues of an Early Bronze II-III fortified settlement. It is purposed here to isolate that portion of …

Exemplary Bilingual Teachers In Puerto Rico: A Multiple-Case Study, Aurea Laracuente Araújo Jan 2002

Exemplary Bilingual Teachers In Puerto Rico: A Multiple-Case Study, Aurea Laracuente Araújo

Dissertations

Problem. Within a context of inadequate pre-service training, insufficient administrative support, and an ambivalent social environment regarding the teaching of ESL in Puerto Rico, a number of conscientious bilingual teachers try to overcome the odds of the system and have an impact on students' ability to speak English. Some even become exemplary teachers. How do they learn to meet so many expectations successfully in spite of real short comings found in their job, and how do they acquire the skills and competencies necessary to be exemplary bilingual teachers in Puerto Rico?

Method. A qualitative multiple-case study design was …

A Descriptive Multiple Case Study Of Caucasian Female Suicide Attempters: Risk And Protective Factors, Janice Johnson Browne Jan 2002

A Descriptive Multiple Case Study Of Caucasian Female Suicide Attempters: Risk And Protective Factors, Janice Johnson Browne

Dissertations

Problem

Suicide is a problem globally and in the United States. Suicide rates for youth have remained particularly high. Caucasian men complete more suicidal acts than women, but women are more frequent suicide attempters. To gain information about the phenomenon of female suicide attempting, it is important to study the attempter. Awareness of risk and protective factors is necessary to intervene and prevent future incidences of suicide and suicide attempting.

Methodology

For this research a descriptive case study design was utilized. Three suicide attempters who had attempted suicide one or more times in the past was the sample population for …

Two sets of observations were made on the distribution of Pseudo-nitzschia taxa in a fjord in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA. From May 21 to 31, 1996, we observed the spatio-temporal distribution of a dense bloom of P. fraudulenta. Microscopic observations of live material were compared to physical-optical water-column structure, currents and wind. At the start of the study, dense concentrations of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were observed directly at the surface. Optical profiles indicated that most cells were concentrated in a thin layer at ~5 m depth, which appeared to be contiguous throughout the sound. Several days later, sustained …

A zero‐dimensional (0‐D) model has been applied to study the sources of hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx = HO2 + OH) in the tropical upper troposphere during the Pacific Exploratory Mission in the tropics (PEM‐Tropics B) aircraft mission over the South Pacific in March–April 1999. Observations made across the Southern Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) and the southern branch of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) provided the opportunity to contrast the relative contributions of different sources of HOx, in a nitrogen oxide radical (NOx)‐limited regime, in relatively pristine tropical air. The primary sources of HOx …

Modeling Phytoplankton Production: Problems With The Eppley Curve And An Empirical Alternative, Mark J. Brush, John W. Brawley, Scott W. Nixon, James N. Kremer

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Papers reporting the results of dynamic simulation models of aquatic ecosystems tend to show predicted concentrations of the state variables. The phytoplankton compartment is typically represented as predicted biomass, expressed as the concentration of chlorophyll a, particulate carbon, or particulate nitrogen. While computed values of phytoplankton biomass generally agree with observations, many of these same models significantly underestimate primary production. Existing simulation models often base the calculation of primary production on the Eppley curve, which sets the maximum daily phytoplankton growth rate as a function of temperature. Despite the apparent wide applicability of the Eppley curve, an increasing number …

Money, Credit, And Banking In Colonial And Postcolonial West Africa, Akanmu G. Adebayo Jan 2002

Money, Credit, And Banking In Colonial And Postcolonial West Africa, Akanmu G. Adebayo

Faculty Articles

Scholarship in African economic history has been dominated by a wave of revisionism lately. The degree of African indebtedness, the imperatives of loan repayment, and the long-term implications of ongoing political and economic changes, all make such a revision exigent indeed. Focusing on the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, this paper produces new evidence to reinterpret and redefine African precolonial financial institutions. The paper has two main parts. Part 1 focuses on the introduction of cowrie currency into Yorubaland and its impact on social stratification. Part 2 examines ajo, the savings institution, esusu, the rotating savings and credit associations (roscas), and …

Paul's Apparent Reversal Of Concern For The Weak Brother In L Corinthians 10:29b-30: An Examination Of The Text In Light Of Greco-Roman Rhetoric, Moses Oladele Taiwo

Dissertations

Problem . In 1 Cor 8:1-10:29a, Paul has been consistently on the side of the brother in 8:11 whose conscience is weak to eat food offered to idols. But, in 10:29b-30, he seems to reverse himself, here suggesting that one should be able to eat anything, regardless of its provenance or the effect such eating may have on others. Or, what should be made of the two questions asked in the text that appear neither fitted to the context nor directly answered by what precedes and follows in the discussion of εἰδωλόθυτα in 8:1-11:17?

Approach . Scholars have employed various …

Study Of The Efficacy Of A Christian-Based Inpatient Hospital For Treating Eating Disorders, Depression, And Spiritual Distress, Robert Alan Darden

Dissertations

Problem . Outcome studies continue to indicate that a substantial proportion of individuals with eating disorders have a dangerously limited response to treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if a Christian cognitive-behavioral-based inpatient hospital that specializes in eating disorders was an effective program for treating eating disorders. Next, this study sought to determine if this inpatient hospital was effective in treating both depression and spiritual distress. Finally, this study examined the relationship between depression and spiritual distress with treatment outcome.

Method . Five hundred and eighty-two patients were admitted to an inpatient hospital between July 1, …

A Correct Analysis Of The Tax Treatment Of Contingent Attorney's Fee Arrangements: Enough With The Fruits And The Trees, Gregg D. Polsky Jan 2002

A Correct Analysis Of The Tax Treatment Of Contingent Attorney's Fee Arrangements: Enough With The Fruits And The Trees, Gregg D. Polsky

Scholarly Works

The tax treatment of contingent attorney's fee arrangements has been the subject of much recent debate and litigation. Some courts and commentators conclude that a plaintiff must include the entire settlement amount, including attorney's fees, in her gross income, while other courts and commentators conclude that a plaintiff must include only her recovery net of attorney's fees. Because of the alternative minimum tax, the resolution of this issue may have a significant effect on the plaintiff's tax liability. In analyzing the issue, courts and commentators have focused on the assignment of income doctrine by inquiring whether, upon execution of a …

Regulation And Measurement Of Nitrification In Terrestrial Systems, D. R. Smart, S. C. Hart, K. A. Haubensak, John M. Stark Jan 2002

Regulation And Measurement Of Nitrification In Terrestrial Systems, D. R. Smart, S. C. Hart, K. A. Haubensak, John M. Stark

Nitric oxide (NO) is a relatively short-lived trace gas that reacts with oxygen in the troposphere to produce the air pollutant ozone. It also reacts with water vapor to form nitric and nitrous acids, which acidify precipitation and increase N deposition. Models currently used to predict soil NO fluxes are based on the assumption that NO flux is proportional to the gross rate of nitrification or N mineralization; however, this assumption has not been tested because of the difficulty in measuring gross N-cycling rates in situ. We measured soil NO fluxes, gross and net N-cycling rates, and a variety of …

The Need For Confirmation In Coliform And E. Coli Enumeration In Foods, İbrahi̇m Çakir, Hi̇lal B. Doğan, Ensar Başpinar, Fi̇kret Keven, A. Kadi̇r Halkman

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

For food and environmental analysis, coliform bacteria and especially E. coli should be determined and enumerated rapidly, correctly and economically. Even if the results are obtained either by traditional or improved techniques, the results require confirmation, meaning that these techniques are not reliable. Confirmation tests need additional time and/or cost. In this study, 500 food samples of 10 various types were analyzed for their natural coliform contamination by the standard MPN method and E. coli by two MUG based MPN techniques. Enumeration results were statistically analyzed to determine whether confirmation tests for coliform and E. coli analysis are necessary or …

Patterns Of Drafting Errors In The Uniform Commercial Code And How Courts Should Respond To Them, Gregory E. Maggs Jan 2002

Patterns Of Drafting Errors In The Uniform Commercial Code And How Courts Should Respond To Them, Gregory E. Maggs

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article identifies eight recurring patterns of drafting in the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). For each of these patterns, and for other idiosyncratic errors, the article recommends specific judicial responses. These responses take advantage of many of the UCC's unique characteristics. While the problem of drafting errors in the UCC may seem minor in light of the model code's high overall quality, the suggested responses can lead to a more efficient and effective application of the statute.

The Distinctive Place Of Religious Entities In Our Constitutional Order, Ira C. Lupu, Robert W. Tuttle Jan 2002

The Distinctive Place Of Religious Entities In Our Constitutional Order, Ira C. Lupu, Robert W. Tuttle

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Although much has been written on the special place of "religion" in American law, there has been considerably less commentary on the distinctive quality of religious institutions as compared with their secular counterparts. The current law of the Religion Clauses, and the characteristics of institutions as compared to religiously motivated individuals, however, suggest that institutions deserve discrete attention. In this paper, a revised version of the Donald Giannella Memorial Lecture recently delivered at Villanova Law School, the authors focus on three different legal contexts in which questions of distinctiveness of religious institutions arise - their exemption from civil rights law …

Federal Courts, Overbreadth, And Vagueness: Guiding Principles For Constitution Challenges To Uninterpreted State Statutes, Mark L. Rienzi, Stuart Buck Jan 2002

Federal Courts, Overbreadth, And Vagueness: Guiding Principles For Constitution Challenges To Uninterpreted State Statutes, Mark L. Rienzi, Stuart Buck

Scholarly Articles

When a federal court is asked to declare an uninterpreted state law to be unconstitutionally overbroad or vague, it faces several tensions. On one side, the overbreadth and vagueness doctrines urge the court to strike down the statute on its face. On the other side, the related doctrines of constitutional avoidance, narrowing interpretations, abstention and certification all urge the court to find some way to save the statute at least as to some applications. But because of the cardinal principle that federal courts are not the final authority on the interpretation of state law, many federal courts err on the …

The Science, Law, And Politics Of Fetal Pain Legislation, Kevin C. Walsh Jan 2002

The Science, Law, And Politics Of Fetal Pain Legislation, Kevin C. Walsh

Scholarly Articles

Most people prefer not to inflict gratuitous pain on other sentient beings, especially other humans. What, then, should be the legal system's reaction to the mounting evidence that in late-term abortions doctors are inflicting just such pain on fetuses who have the anatomical, physiological, and neurological capacity to experience it? The pain being inflicted is gratuitous because it can be easily avoided with no significant increases in cost or health risk by the administration of tar geted fetal pain relief. If informed that an abortion is likely to cause pain to the fetus and given a choice between a procedure …

Increasing Company Competitiveness: “Tuning-Up” Your Pay System, K. Dow Scott, Dennis Morajda, James W. Bishop

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The cost of labor (i.e., salaries, benefits and incentives) accounts for a sizeable portion of an employer’s operating expenses. Pay packages priced too low or configured improperly can deprive firms of the talent needed to successfully develop, market and produce viable products and services in today’s ultra competitive business environment. However, if pay packages are too high, labor costs can weaken a firm’s ability to compete. For example, a firm with 500 employees can have labor costs that easily exceed $15 million. Thus, building and maintaining a cost-efficient pay system that encourages employee performance without adversely affecting corporate earnings requires …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Brad Bridgewater

Graduate Research Papers

Caring is the first trait exhibited by almost every great leader. It may sound like a very soft touchy-feely thing, but it works. The second trait of great leaders, or those who get others to excel, is Integrity. In other words, they can be trusted to tell the truth. They tell the truth in good times and bad, and they tell the truth whether or not it makes them look good or bad.

Finally, great leaders who get others to excel have high expectations. They don't let people get by with mediocrity. No one can really feel good about themselves when …

Perceived Internal Depth In Rotating And Translating Objects, M. L. Braunstein, C. W. Sauer, Cary S. Feria, G. J. Andersen

Faculty Publications

Previous research has indicated that observers use differences between velocities and ratios of velocities to judge the depth within a moving object, although depth cannot in general be determined from these quantities. In four experiments we examined the relative effects of velocity difference and velocity ratio on judged depth within a transparent object that was rotating about a vertical axis and translating horizontally, examined the effects of the velocity difference for pure rotations and pure translations, and examined the effect of the velocity difference for objects that varied in simulated internal depth. Both the velocity difference and the velocity ratio …

The Classical Limit Of The Quantum Baker's Map, Mark Morgan-Tracy Jan 2002

The Classical Limit Of The Quantum Baker's Map, Mark Morgan-Tracy

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This work concerns the finding of the semi-classical form of the coherent state representation for the class of quantum baker’s maps defined by Schack and Caves. It begins by introducing the finite-dimensional Hilbert space on which the quantum baker’s map is defined. Its pertinent features including the all important symmetry operators are introduced and given a full explanation. We also introduce the finite-dimensional phase space which will give the semi-classical limit a geometrical interpretation. For a D dimensional Hilbert space, the finite-dimensional phase space is found to be a grid with D2 points. Each point corresponds to a particular pair …
